It bothers me that he completely misses the point of Usopp's frustration and feeling of betrayal of Luffy seemingly giving up on the Going Merry. Its not just that Merry was a gift given by Usopp's friend, but he sees the ship as his responsibility to maintain, and since he didn't have the skills or capability to maintain it he sees it as him and the ship not being good enough for the crew, and since Luffy is ready to cast their ship aside as not being good enough all of Usopp's insecurities of not being good enough for the crew are being confirmed. Usopp is such a good written character in this arc, and is the reason that he's one of my favorite Straw Hats.
Even the most experienced fantasy readers miss that at first because they don't realize Merry is sentient. Usopp comes across as annoying initially because he's seemingly willing to hurt actual friends and relationships over an object. It makes no sense for Usopp to compare himself to the ship as a crewmate before the end of Water 7. That's what makes the writing and plot twist so genius and effective.
Mostly everyone feels what he feels the first time they watch unless they had some prior knowledge about usopp or other one piece content like most reactors.
That’s a good point, I never thought of it that way, it’s been so many years now since I read it I honestly don’t remember my initial reaction to the fight, all I know is how I currently feel about it.
@@bendover7841 Well now I wouldn't say that about Merry. On Skypeia we got hints as to how special Merry, tho we don't know the name of it at the time a mysterious figure makes itself known to Ussop and fixes the ship. The whole experience is otherworldly. Just what exactly was this mysterious figure doing fixing the Merry? Nothing in the Skypiea indicates that its a figure from the sky islands, so then where did it come from? Where did it go? What about that heart breaking panel after the Ussop and Luffy fight where rain is pouring and Oda goes out of his way to make the Merry appear as if she's crying.

i get that a lot of people dont like ussop at the beginning and he is generally disliked until later arcs but i think water7 and enies lobby is still easy one of the best arcs of all time and the ussop leaving moment is so incredibly well written

Ussop may be a coward but he steps up when he needs to. Like he did in Alabasta. The great thing about Ussop is that he is a coward even in the later arcs but once he finds that little courage in himself he becomes the warrior that he always wanted to be and overcomes his foes. And the fact that he is a liar makes it even better because what he does in those scary situations is lie to himself, that he’s done enough, the enemy is invincible etc. but then realizes he’s being a coward again and mans up.
