When I grew up in New Zealand, I'm currently living in Australia, it was the Fin brothers, Dave Dobyn, Herbs, The Dance Exponents and Ardijah. Reggae was popular for me and still is to this day

Ive just turned 50 so the NZ music I grew up listening to is not reflected in the contemporary lists below. But to me, kiwi music is the Finn brothers (Split Enz and Crowded House), Dave Dobyn, The Dance Exponents, Bic Runga, Herbs, The Mutton Birds, Shona Laing and Supergroove. I suggest you listen to one song from each of them, starting with 'Message to my Girl' (split enz), 'Why does love do this to me' (exponents) and 'You gotta know' (supergroove). Now, excuse me while I spend the evening listening to all the wonderful music you have reminded me of!!! :D Great topic, I look forward to your next question :D

Reggae is huge in NZ. Six60, Drax Project, Benee, L.A.B, are some of the current bigger NZ singers/Bands at the moment.

Oh dude! Split Ends, Crowded House, DD Smash. Dragons, Neil and Tim Finn. Dave Dobbin. Herbs, Che fu ,Six60. Oh my dog I could go on. Also great female singers and groups. Sharon O'Neil. Annie Crummer, Bic Runga, Laude.

  • @glenakiwibackyardgardner1193

Stan walker and 6sixty Dave dobbyn are some great kiwi singers to listen to and music goes with generations so different music reflects different times like my father loves country music and so dose this generation now

RE: Music. It depends on what style of music you like. Crowded House is my first thought. If you're looking for something more metal, then Alien Weaponry is where I point you.
I have no idea where they got the name.

The main difference between Rugby and Rugby League is after 5 tackles the team with the ball has to kick on the 5th or hand ball over to other team. I feel it's a faster game.

Depends on the radio station you are on George fm is electronic music and ‘the rock’ right now is playing a 2000 song list of rock songsvoted by listeners. Every genre is covered here and there great success in all genres . Shapeshifter are a great electronic band , katchafire reggae , shihad are like the goo fighters of Nz. Then pop stars like Lorde etc

In terms of pop music we are very heavily influenced by larger dominating markets like USA and Great Britain. Rock is a big deal in large areas of NZ as well as country. NZ grown bands are actually quite abundant though and just doing digging on spotify you can find a lot of Playlists woth bands like Th'Dudes and Split Enz to artists like Six60 and Broods. NZ music culture for the most part tends to reflect our sport though in the sense that it's mostly just casual and recreational rather than trying to be mainstream. Going to pubs, shows or people's sheds is a great way to listen to people just playing music.

I believe 6% of all music played on the airwaves must be a New Zealand artist. Poi-E by Patea Maori club and E IPO by Prince Tui Teka are the only Maori language songs that made number one on the charts.

Responding to the first list, Cycling and Rowing are also big recreational sports where we are in New Zealand. In answer to the second question, some of the artists you may assume to be American aren't actually American. Because so much goes on in America, foreign artists are likely to spend a lot of time there.

For many years it was very difficult for local musicians to get played on commercial radio stations. I thought that had improved but apparently not.
RNZ National do play kiwi music quite a lot (eg Music 101 on Saturdays) because being Govt funded they have to.

NZ music is huge - you have to listen to Ka Hao - 35 - this personifies New Zealand for me. Six60 is a must - also Katchafire, Black Seeds, Hello Sailor (classic kiwi), Fat Freddies Drop - Crowded House are NZ royalty as is Dave Dobyn. If you are overseas in a pub oryou get kiwis together and someone starts singing Tutira Mai Nga Iwi they will all join in because we all learnt it at school and it speaks of home. The combined US & Kiwi armed forces did a version of it which is worth a watch - czcams.com/video/zUuOnl4f0rE/video.html

The New Zealand music scene was amazing through the 80's and 90's and radio set lists covered everything from Aussie and Kiwi music to US and British. These days (this may depend in part to which area you live in but here in the South Island,) the radio seems to play the same music it did 20 years ago. I highly recommend delving into Kiwi music - Split Enz, Dance Exponents, The Mockers and maybe even some of the university bands like The Chills, The Bats ....look up artists from Flying Nun Records.

Without doubt reggae has had a major influence on New Zealand music, ever since Bob Marley came to Aotearoa
My recommendation is Fat Freddy's Drop
I also like to search for "Kiwi Music" on CZcams and just let it play in the background on the TV.

Most kiwis listen to the usual well known rock music favourites from the US and UK also some from Australia and a few from NZ, mainly older bands and artists here have a massive following that still tour in summer months here, and new bands like six60 have found a following, with young artists like Lourde/Benee etc too. In Auckland with its big Polynesian population has a market for Rap, RnB styles from the US. A good mix of kiwi music favs is the “Nature’s Best” discs or download with the most liked kiwi bands over the last 30years. Gives a real good sample variety if you can get it still. Soccer easily is the biggest sport numbers wise but rugby is nz’s top sport for interest and the All Blacks the premier team. Cricket for summer is followed and enjoyed by many too. Hockey for comm games, league for one team NZ has in the oz comp but it’s record sadly has been a joke, basketball is quite big funnily enough and usually does quite well on world stage. Sailing is big, esp in Auckland. Of course kiwis play almost any sport or at least give them a try, which comes from our school p.e. system which makes you try most of them. I think we are just happy if your kids play something no matter what it is.😊

Popular genre of music. To my mind it depends how old you are. On radio there is the Concert Programme (a station that plays classical only) - probably more for oldies. Have seen some of the other comments. The youngsters seem to include NZ pop from very recent years - but you can check out records like 'NZ's Top 30 songs' (prior to the 90s.) There are other NZ singers such as Malcolm McNeill, an NZ singer who renders 'old' tunes in a laid-back jazz fashion also has a following. Popular bands/singers from a few decades ago include Split Enz, Crowded House, Warratahs, John Hanlon (60's), Bic Runga - all cater to different sectors of NZ society.

The best home grown genre IMHO isn't really a single genre..., but more of blend of pop-rock-funk-raggae sound that features a lot on the radio. IT'll be heavy in one of those, but have a little of the rest. Bands who kind of fit into that genre are the likes of:
    Fat Freddy's Drop
    The Black Seeds
    Six60
    Elmeno P
and going back a few years, a fave of mine is ... Supergroove. Scorpio-pio-pio!

THE most popular sport is fishing. Forget about rugby , cricket etc as these are fringe sports in comparison with fishing. Freshwater or salt water New Zealanders spend a fortune on fishing. Most NZ ers may catch a fish which may equate to their catch costing over a $1000 a kg. But who cares? The house may need painting but the boat will come first

Because of my age I grew up listening to our biggest rock station of the time and they played Casey Kassem's AT40 and Wolfman Jack's radio show. So that's my favorite music. I now listen to "The Sound" (92.6 in Tauranga) which is NZ's best radio station in my opinion. Classic rock and heavy rock and metal.
The best way to get a handle on NZ music artists without missing anyone out is to go here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_Zealand_musicians
