The fatality comes years later from suicide caused by PTSD, different kinds of cancers from chemical spills & smoke, heart attacks from stressful shifts, dangers of homelessness due to PTSD....anything else I've missed, pls add
I'm a microbiologist...we don't have much of a fatality rate, but that doesn't mean we can't get sick from what we are working with! I like your logic.
Anyone who tells you "firefighters are overrated" has never been in an emergency situation before. When me and my father were defending our home from a 20 meter wall of fire eating through the reed forest next to it, we begged for the firefighters to be plentiful enough to come help quenching it. Thankfully the fire didn't reach our home, just killed two weeping willows and a quarter of our apple orchard. This guy's biggest emergency ever was his vape running out of juice.
I have been and firefighters are completely overrated. I was shocked at the incompetence and ego when they shipped my grandmas stroke BLS as gen weakness when she was altered. Getting yelled at by the medic for disagreeing was a shock, especially pointing out the facial droop and slurred speech. lucky for her the ambulance crew upgraded as soon as they were away from the fire crew. The fact fire and EMS are together so firefighters can get more money hurts us all. Talking to firefighters I have to agree,
@@kingofthechair5752 There's idiots everywhere, especially when medical emergencies are concerned. That doesn't mean firefighters aren't invaluable in many other scenarios, or that competent EMTs wouldn't be in one like yours.
@@FiksIIanzO that’s only one example I have. But there is a theme with fire. if I’m having a medical emergency I don’t want a firefighter or firefighter paramedic, I want a real medical professional. Fire fighters are qualified for putting the wet stuff in red stuff and breaking things. After that you need professionals to step in.
@@kingofthechair5752dude I've been an actual EMT, one of those "real medical professionals" you talked about. Let the guy who knows what he's talking about speak. The other guy is right, incompetence can be found everywhere in the medical field. Also every 911 call I've worked on firefighters were first on scene, 12-lead and bp cuff attached and taking readings. So yes, they absolutely are medical professionals, it's actually what they mostly do. But while to get on an ambulance, either ALS 911 or BLS like I mostly did, you just need your NREMT. Whereas fire guys almost always have their paramedic. In other words, they're actually even MORE medically trained than we are, plus trained in hazard safety, plus they have their bachelor's in fire science usually. It's true, fire cadets can be douches, I was actually sexually harassed by one in EMT school. But speaking as someone who has not just talked to but also WORKED ALONGSIDE AND FOR firefighters, as first responders go they tend to have their shit zipped up tightly and they do their jobs well. That said, it's not as if I don't believe your story :c Sadly, first responders are human, they make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes lead to death. It's why the first response field has a high suicide rate too
I can't believe The Amazing Atheist is still around. I haven't heard of him since like 2017, so it's good to see he's still doing nothing but going after those who help other people.
@@TylerZeta he always reminded me of an edgy teenager. He's got loads of shit takes, attacks victims and innocent people, and makes a lot of incendiary comments just to get a rise out of people. He's not much better than Amos Yee.
As someone who has been through two house fires in his life, one where I woke my grandfather and we got out safely and one where firefighters broke an entire window and frame out to save my life, you know who thinks firefighters are greatly underrated and not paid nearly enough? This guy right here!
I just recently had a reason to love EMT folk even more...I was walking my dog one afternoon & an ambo came screaming up behind us. My dog's ears clearly hurt when he's got a siren a few feet away, so I knelt down to cover his ears & reassure him. About 30 feet before it got to me, the ambo's siren cut off. It cut back on about 30 feet beyond us. I don't know if the driver saw me grinning & waving & jumping, but to make sure I got my "thank you" across I went & got a few bags of candy (including RedHots, Fireballs, & Hot Tamales, of course. And chocolate!) & a thank you note that I'm delivering tomorrow. This is the same station that saved my entire neighborhood from going up in flames 3 years ago when a local nutjob firebombed a pickup truck with camper topper, trying to kill the people inside....& they were parked about 18 feet from my house. I STILL can't believe we didn't go up in flames. That brought about my first "Thank you" goodie package to the fire station. And the final blow-me-away fact was, the police came out with shovels & brooms & such to clean up the molten metal & glass & other garbage that had melted & been blown all over the street & sidewalk. The police, after 5-6 hours on scene, dragged out their janitorial tools & cleaned everything up. Deepest respects to all emergency responders, and THANK YOU!! 🤩🥰😘
@@kingofthechair5752 where I live, EMS shows up when you call in a fire. They're all in the same station. Considering there were 2 people inside the camper when it was fire-bombed, that's a good thing. And I hear people are often harmed in fires.
@@kellyhoward6941 in our area, EMT's come with a fire truck, our paramedics come with the ambulance. My wife was in full arrest, I was performing CPR and had dialed 911 and via speakerphone alerted them for the need for EMS. First responder was a cop with an AED, who took over CPR, not that I was tired yet. The EMTs arrived next in the fire truck from the firehouse across the street, who then took over from the cop. The paramedics arrived around 15 minutes later, as they were returning from the hospital and hooked up the Lifepak, which unfortunately displayed absolutely no pattern. I suspected as much when the AED remained ominously silent about shocks, only advising when to pause for monitoring, then prompting resumption. One look at the monitor, I looked at the paramedic and said, "Not even PEA, she's gone". The EMT just stood there wide eyed, I was a military medic for decades and allowed my EMT-P to lapse. Know who doesn't arrive as EMS in a fire truck? Guys like me, I arrived in an armored combat vehicle that was converted into an ambulance. We also had a Hummer ambulance, but I usually was in the field with the troops, so had the armored vehicle.
1:50 My dad, a firefighter for many years in Denmark. In the late 70's, before I was born. Was on a call, where on the 4th story of a building, the floor collapsed. Somehow, his foot catched on something, and he dangled face down, looking at the flames beneath him. They didn't have radio's at the time. So his buddy, once realising that trying to get my dad up alone, would likely cause him to fall. Raced out of the building, telling what had happened. As the story goes, the fire captain initially had to threaten every single firefighter at the scene, with getting fired. Because they all wanted to run inside, dropping what they were currently doing. After quickly formulating a plan, my dad got rescued. He had extensive surgery on his lower leg and foot, as well as minor burn treatment. That injury, stopping his active firefighting career, and caused pain his entire life. But turned into a 20 year career as a paramedic. As well as 40 years as a part time fire instructor, and planner, in national service. Though an anecdote, I as the kid of a firefighter, have always been inspired by the few stories dad was willing to talk about, as well as the moral codex he instilled in me and my brothers. When finally a few years before his passing, he became more willing to talk about the specifics of his career. My view of dad turned, from him just being a hero to his sons, to a genuine Hero with a capital H. And so did my view of every single firefighter, and paramedic.
As an atheist with Christian, Muslim, and Jain friends, I believe it one of the most important things in life to respect everyone, regardless of their beliefs, race, sexualities, and, of course, their personal opinions! But opinions like this one make that very very difficult.
One of my first thoughts regarding this twerp was "oh hell no, why do you have to give atheists a bad name". But really, the crucial part of his moniker is the "amazing" bit. If somebody feels a need to style himself as "amazing Anything", then this "how dare you think that some guys working to save lives are cooler than _meeee!!_ " whining is pretty much what I expect.
And always remember people, religions are based on unnecessary and useless hope for the best after death, which is based on our fear of the unknown, and respect needs to be EARNED most of the times
Yeah, what a jerk this guy is. But I guess that's how he earns his money. Where you are at, do you also find that religious people have a harder time respecting irreligious people than the other way around? I try to treat everyone with respect. Quite a few religious people however don't even realise the many ways in which they disrespect irreligious people. Ranging from speaking in absolutes to being close-minded and not even considering that people think different than they do.
@@yasininn76I am not a believer, but I know that that ain't what religion is based on. Religion is based on doing good, but it's enforced with scaremongering. 😅
Same! Also, perhaps they should consider having less stuff on their wall behind them. Or find a wall with a more emptier space. Sure you’re all about chaos but people are more likely to get too distracted by your wall posters rather than actually listen to you. At least the firefighters background is actually welcoming, friendly, and not too distracting.
My mother and step father died in a fire in 2008 however my sister and her two kids were able to get out of the trailer. Trailers burn fast and hot! Though my parents were not saved i have the upmost respect for fire fighters! They risk their lives for ours on the daily. I am grateful for each and everyone we have! Thank you ❤
Back in the 60s & 70s, I started as a CD trainee at age 16. At age 27, I'm told that I was the second youngest Fire District chief in the history of California. I resigned because I couldn't handle the POLITICS ! 94% of the calls were medical. Until you have crawled around a burning building hoping to rescue an occupant, where it was so hot that standing up would have meant instant death, you have NO RIGHT to be critical ! God bless and protect all my BROTHERS !
Never. NEVER. Insult the people who are supposed to have your back when things get rough. You might think they are worthless when times are easy, but you better PRAY they are still around to care when shit hits the fan.
this is a man who films himself pouring steaming oil on his comedically under-sized genitals. Not hard to predict a scenario where the ol' Amazing Atheist is thanking God that firefighters exist. Yeah, that's really his brand name. 2006 CZcams was so schizophrenic.
This happened to my crew the other day. We were buying some stuff for salads and lemon pepper chicken, and this dude (couldn't be older than 23-24) approaches us. He says, verbatim, "You're welcome for that food. I'm glad your not using my tax dollars for big steaks today." I was kind of dumbstruck but my Captain just said, "Well thank you for kindly paying us out of your pocket sir, have a nice day." The guy walked away with a big smile on his face like he won the exchange.
Or the pricks I once had seen, give a fire truck the finger, while parked in front of the bowser, preventing the fire truck from being refuel. This was years ago, so I do hope that has come to bite them in the ass already.
Honestly, firefighters might be some of the only people who actually still have your back today. Probably why they sometimes don't get along with police. Also EMT's, those guys are heroes.
Reminds me of that famous video of French firefighters going after the French police when the police were using disproportionate force- literal outright violence- towards protestors and it’s kind of glorious to see them stepping up and protecting the people as they always do, though horrific that it was even necessary to step in because the institution that is responsible for protecting people from other people, were the ones escalating and committing violence against their fellow human beings. You could tell how frustrated they were that fellow workers in the emergency services could be so corrupt and cruel, when the fire and rescue crews just want to save people. Also their masks and breathing apparatus are handy against tear gas, so there’s that too lol
Happy to have you! But on another note: don't interact with those people. They are not the same level as you are. That means mentioning them either holds them up (what they don't deserve), or needs you to get down to their level (where they might win by experience). Do your thing, show 'em what you got. Cause I see great potential in your videos. Much love!
"paid firefighters go up, and rates of fires go down, explain that!" ... well yes, the more people we pay to combat fires, the more effective we are at combatting them.... ?????
It was number of fires responded to though, which isn't something that goes down with number of firefighters. Number of firefighters doesn't deter fires from starting.
@@XiaoYueMao Aren't the safety inspections enforcing codes? To say this decrease is due to the firefighters being more numerous requires assumptions, which are not assumptions I think are obviously true. For example, if the only variable changing is number of firefighters, then it would appear that the reason fires decreased is because there previously weren't enough firefighters to enforce code and such. I see no reason to find an assumption like that so obvious it should be "yea ?????" I don't really think the video does either, given that they didn't cite extra firefighters as the reason for the decrease at all. If that were the obvious cause of decreased fires, why would he completely skip over that and focus on call volume despite having that second graph so soon after?
The reason there are more paid firefighters is due to medical and other hazardous situation calls and the fact that that the areas that have paid firefighters are areas like large cities/municipalities which have only grown in the past decade which logically would only increase the size of their departments. Not because of fires and fire prevention however I would be curious if those fire response rates include woodland and car fires or if it's just structure fires. Ultimately the amount of paid firefighters vs volunteer is still in the 30% percent range anyhow

"Firefighters are overrated" Ah yes the people who ran INTO the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, the wildfires in the western United States, and hundreds of thousands of fires in the US. Oh the firefighters who tried to help fight the fire at CHERNOBYL! I agree with your sentiment. Chernobyl I believe was mostly done by prisoners, if I'm not mistaken, along with Fukashima. Either way the fact remains, people run in to these danger zones.

@@myotiswii ah yes literally every single house everywhere catches fire daily, and firefighters magically turn the destroyed building into the way it was before the fire. Which is why after someone's house burns down, they're not homeless, they can just go live back in the burnt house. I'm not saying firefighters are useless, I'm just saying they're doing their JOB, it's not volunteer work, they don't do it because they love ***you***, the risk to their lives are as minimal as most other "high risk" jobs like on construction sites, and fires happen quite very rarely. So they shouldn't be "worshipped", as explained in the video that you didn't bother to watch.
@@llVIU I am not 'worshipping' firefighters. I just say that you should have enough. And to have enough you need to have a few more than you need daily to counter bigger fires. I worked as an EMT for a couple years and only did non-emergency transport, but even with minimal experience with actual emergencies, I cannot help but respect the _hell_ out of people who make that their whole career. I didn't have the stomach or the stones to make it all the way to paramedic (and even less a firefighter, which I realized real fast I did not have a chance at). Anyone who says a word against our emergency workers is a prick worth less than the air they waste.
Amazing how he never mentions that even though the number of paid firefighters has gone up the largest number of firefighters in the US are still volunteers. Who actually get paid nothing to risk theirs to save others
That’s right. Speaking from 20 yeas experience. When you’re a volunteer in a small town you more than likely know the persons who’s house you put out or are pulling out of a wrecked car or doing CPR on. Makes it even tougher.
Amen. Spent Years as a reserve, specialized brush monkey, including helitack. We responded on all second alarms as manpower. Did the grunt work, had my crew split between truck and engine assignments. My crew had to be qualified for both. On scene, I was responsible for 12. Most gratifying moment? Twice, a chief tossed me the white helmet, "captain, you're wearing the wrong helmet". To this day, I really appreciate that. Yes, I was not paid. Be careful out there, brothers!
I’m so grateful for all of you first responders. My daughter passed in 2021. I kept doing CPR until the EMTs and Paramedics arrived. Once I rode with a volunteer crew that had seen this exact situation a few days before. Everyone was still shaken by finding a charred corpse just inside the door. At the end of the shift, they went home, tired to get a little sleep, and woke up in time to go to their day jobs.
Of all the ways FDC has educated me about the line of work, that one has easily stuck with me the most. I've heard some wild, messed up stories, but not much compares with what it must be like finding the person you came to save asphyxiated and burned to char literally within arm's reach of safety.
My first thought was, "I have a fire extinguisher, whose sole purpose is to get me through that fucking door, whose staying on the hinges at that point is entirely optional". Because, he's spot on about how toxic smoke is from house fires, largely due to burning plastics. And Halon ain't exactly a wonderkind, it's a horror, as on exposure to heat, flame and worse, hot metal, it'll decompose into hydrogen fluoride, which becomes hydrofluoric acid on contact with water and can trivially etch glass. It literally killed MRAP vehicle crews, when the Taliban and AQ learned to fire their RPG into the extinguisher tanks on the vehicle. Your air conditioner will also be releasing that same nastiness. And your fridge. The plastics, well, anything from known carcinogens through old faithful, cyanide gases. As for the moron from the video, well, he's welcome to never call EMS and fire and just man up and take care of that bleeding, major crushing injury, vehicle crushed in on his family (assuming he can ever find a partner that could tolerate his existence) and burning building that's collapsing onto him and his all by his little lonesome. Because, as the first lesson we learned in medic school was, "Eventually, all bleeding shall stop. One way or another". And the US population in 1980, when I graduated high school was 226 million, we're now at 339 million and climbing, so the number of calls will increase. Especially given our new high energy lithium based batteries, who make thermite look like something pleasant when they go up in flames.
He's just jealous of the calendars. 100% of the firefighters in the area I grew up in were volunteers. They raised money for their equipment through boot drives, fundraisers, using the firehouse (hosie) as a bar on the weekends, hosting block shoots, renting out their buildings as a social hall, and serving breakfast every weekend. They also serviced all of their own equipment, including doing mechanical work on their trucks, and... just as an aside, would wake up out of a dead sleep when the fire claxon went off in the middle of the night to save people's lives, pets, and homes. You know, hero's work.
Firehouse as a bar? That’s a creative money raising solution. I like it. Coulda made an in-house special with a base of fireball. Coulda called it “the structural” or something. That would be cool.
And I bet each and every one of them was the type of guy who never said anything about being a hero, and just called it " doing our job" because no real hero will say they are a hero. They might deflect that title to another coworker, but not personally say it. This guy talking shit about firemen obviously enjoys living in a place that is up to fire code, and safe. After all, what kind of fire has he ever dealt with? Oh yeah, the fire that he uses to light up his crack!
I am so tired of ignorant, tunnel vision minded, cynical, neckbeards that want to complain and tear apart everything of value with whiny complaints. They don’t have the capacity to see things beyond what they want to see.
Says you, under an attack video. Like, this video is the kind of shit right-wing psychos do to get their legions of chucklefucks feeling superior to other people.
I'm fairly sure he's being ironic. No one has a problem with firefighters, and pretending you do is funny - or could be seen as such. Whether he's joking in his heart, I don't know.
@@AsifIcarebear3 I highly suggest you watch his video. His inflammatory delivery aside, his arguments are basically: 1. We have way more paid firefighters despite fewer fires, which makes no sense. 2. It doesn't make sense that firefighters are doing non-firefighting work, and if we want to publicly fund people to do that work, then we should do that instead of expanding the scope of what firefighters are supposed to do, because.... 3. Firefighters clearly don't sign up to do medical work, they sign up to fight fires. 4. The hero worship firefighters get as a profession is undeserved and/or arbitrary, as there are more dangerous professions that don't get the same treatment. There are heroic firefighters, but not every firefighter is one, and the media regularly misrepresents their actions as more heroic than they are. He gives an anecdote here about how firefighters put out his housefire, and the media reported on it as them saving his pets, giving the impression that they burst in and pulled the pets out of the burning building, when in reality they just put out the fire and the pets happened to survive inside. This is technically correct but highly misleading reporting.
I know this vid was probably frustrating for you to make but it was actually very educational for so many of us. With all the problems fires have caused in the last 10 years in my country, we literally say that firefighting is a job that we gladly pay for and may there never be a need for them to do anything. So thank you for taking the time to actually help us all learn a few more things!
My father has been a firefighter for 40 years. He's not perfect, the job has caused him some problems, but his job is absolutely necessary, and he should be respected for doing it so diligently for so long, even when it broke his heart and body.
He’s upset because the windows of his Prius were busted out by firefighters as he parked in the fire lane blocking a hydrant as he went into the local Starbucks for a chai latte
I watched a coworker and friend, who was a part-time firefighter, suit up and go, alone, into the basement of a 100yo building, that was filled with gas, to find the main and shut it off. At any moment that building could have blown itself off its foundations, and vaporized him, but he volunteered to go in. He did find the main, and got out just fine. When I saw him next, I asked him about going into that building. He shrugged and said, "Somebody had to do it." And because of my friend and all the other firefighters I've had the pleasure of knowing, no one better ever diss them in front of me, because when I'm done with them, their ears will bleed.
I'm from mexico, and to be honest have no connection or knowledge about fire departments; but I got the chance a few years back to visit chicago. My hotel happened to be across the street from a fire department and my mother, my sister and I got to see how they ran drills and it was just impressive. The speed and coordination with which they moved was outstanding. Seriously applause to all first responders everywhere.
To be fair it does actually raise an interesting question: what is the actual physical and mental cost of parasocial relationships when there is much more two way interaction than in the past. I don't care if anyone thinks this important or not, it is an interesting question regardless. (think of the how little an actor in 1965 would interact with their fans vs all the crap on social media these days, it was basically a one way street in the past)
A good friend of mine, a retired senior fire officer, was diagnosed with mesothelioma. Doctor asked if he had ever been in contact with asbestos. 'What like asbestos hats, asbestos clothing, asbestos gloves and numerous dashes into burning buildings laced with the stuff!' Doctor just said 'Oh dear'.
growing up my next door neighbor was a mountain of a man I had incredible respect for even long before I knew he was a retired fire fighter. It was because of him my mothers house (the other half of the duplex attached to his) the reason it didn't burn down after he passed away and the family sold the house and the new owner was remodeling with an unsafe heater that caught his side on fire. But because the firefighter next door had extended the brick divider wall between our halves of the duplex all the way up to the root line with real bricks, he literally built a solid brick wall between our halves. That is why my mothers house only sustained water damage as the fire fighters were required to bust into her attic and spray just in case. They noted how smart that wall was, they had no idea it was put there by a former fire fighter. When my own father passed away who took such amazing good care of me and my mother? a family of firefighters that lived up the street. They went above and beyond and I will never forget what they did for us, even though I was just 12 years old at the time. I have the highest respect and love for all fire fighters and EMS. They are the real MVPs of the world. not political leaders, not Fußball players, not even Dwane Johnson, deserve as much respect as someone who can literally pull someone from the edges of oblivion and not think twice about putting their own lives at risk to do so.
I’m so thankful for our Wheaton fire dept. My husband had been sweating some pipes together that were on the wall in his shed. The insulation caught on fire in the wall. He had two extinguishers and used both. He was pretty sure the fire was out but told me to be ready to call 911 if it started up again. I told him to call anyway to be safe. He did. The fire WAS out. But it could have been a disaster, as my husband had flammable solvents inside. When we moved to a new apartment I had a bad asthma attack. There was no 911 in our area. The way our apartment was configured the paramedics had to walk me our to the gurney. I had one FF in front of me holding my hands in case I passed out and one behind me. My first ride in an ambulance. The paramedic in the ambulance started apologizing for getting a little blood on my clothes when he was starting my IV. I told him that I didn’t care. To do what he needed to do. Thank God for firemen!
As a female firefighter back in The Day, even I was fueled by testosterone, machismo and 250 years of firefighting tradition and fought to not stand in the driveway lobbing water into the building while my brothers had all the fun.
Honestly as a woman I don’t want another woman trying to save me from a burning building. I want a man who is stronger and can pull me to freedom. Females are better are some things and men the other things. We need each other. For protection and help in a fire I will take a real man any day. If I want common sense, better at detail skills I would want a woman. ❤

I 100% Agree with @traczebabe There are jobs for men and for female... Equality is a thing and women needs to figure out the fine line between being equal or feministic. Plenty of examples of women using their body and looks to their advantage. Ofc there are men who does so too but they are fare less than women! And if the women dont like, they will shut the men down.
yeah so not-so-fun- fact, The new training method for house fires here in The Netherlands actually teachest us: If noone's inside the building, you're not going in either. Which makes some sense? Like yeah we don' want to create unncessary victims, but we had an attic fire a little while ago that was so small we just gave it a shot with the attack line and it was out. Had we waited outside, that fire would've expanded since it's kinda difficult to extinguish a fire that's under a roof, literally made to keep water out, and the whole roof most likely would've burned off.
The west coast is on fire and he picks now to make an uneducated statement about firefighters? Thank you so much for the sacrifice and hard work you firefighters put into keeping us safe.
I can name a lot of jobs with a much higher risk factor than firefighters and they don't get a fraction of the praise that americans give to firefighters. That was the argument that went over your head. Why do you insist on taking this so personal?

I'm a service tech and i saw once how firefighters responded to a fire alarm in the hospital. I was working in a new hospital wing installing an automated unit-dose system. We heard a fire alarm and when i walked out to a corridor i saw a cloud of smoke. I swear those guys were there in under 10 minuts, a bit more than 5. I saw 3 trucks appearing in front of the hospital back door and at least one was standing near the gate outside. As a tech, i was able to smell that it is not a smoke, but something oily and i was able to pinpoint the source behind HVAC equipment room. Of course i didn't open it, we were monitoring from the other end of the corridor with extinguishers near by. I told what i knew to the first firefighter and then a couple of them opened those doors. It was fortunately just an oil mist from HVAC compressor. Those guys are amazing and very proffesional🥰
Why do you think they always bring out all the heavy equipment to any little ‘cat in a tree’ incident? “Welll, you’d rather have it and not need it than the other way around!!” Sure maybe, but also they have to show up to their annual funding meeting and show the govt that they’ve used so much equipment so many time and there’s so many hours of vehicle use that they need more money this year to ‘better the dept’ and get new shiny vehicles. Next time you’re in a wealthy suburb or even just some cities, look at the actual stations. the firedepts are often the nicest newest buildings with the shiniest biggest toys. Not to mention luxury lazy boys and new massive tvs and bunch of trager grills etc. Most firefighters are respectable hard working heros that put themselves in harms way for the greater good of us, and we salute you. But ask yourself why is it only in America that firefighting is set up like this. Have you even been to Mexico, Europe, South America?! It’s not always black and white. Two things can be true at once. But calling into question the character of individuals that you don’t know is the absolute wrong approach no matter how you look at it.
@@vladstrava9572 Look, if they have to use all their tools even on the smallest calls to get the best, top of the line equipment and comfortable work places then so be it. Here's a wild idea: Maybe if the ambulance services weren't brutally defunded to give tax cuts millionaires, the firefighters (going outside of the scope of their work) wouldn't be the first ones on scene. When it comes to medical emergencies I prefer a 10 minute ambulance response timeover a 20 minute firefighter response time myself.
@@nvelsen1975 why? The goal is stabilize, then transport. Most of the time involved stabilizing with an ambulance on scene is time that the ambulance cannot handle other calls to transport some other poor slob to the hospital.
When I had my first panic attack a year ago and thought I was legit dying, the firefighters were the 1st ones to get to me and diagnose me. I'll never forget that.
...don't forget the medical calls. Firefighters also respond to medical calls...I dispatched for 8 years. I always felt bad when I set off the station alarm at 3am bc someone had indigestion and mistook it for a heart attack...... Thanks for all you do!
I understand why someone might mistake indigestion for heart attack. There's a lot of gas trapped in your system and it causes crazy chest pain as a result of all the gas trapped in your esophagus and whatnot. The trick is to look for other symptoms. Burping, your burps tasting like you just farted out of your mouth, nausea, intestinal cramps, diarrhea, etc.
I used to live in a pretty rural village in the UK and the fire station is significantly closer than the hospital. It was pretty common for fire fighters to show up as first responders because it would take a while for paramedics who could be miles away to get there. There are the dedicated first responders, but you still fall into the same issues with rural areas where the few who live super close either aren't on call that day or have ended up far enough away that the fire fighters would have a significantly quicker response time
Thank you Jason, yep that guy is spraying crap Firefighters save SO many lives in SO many ways. Firefighters saved me twice from a severe asthma attack and a real bad horse accident. Well, it might not be too far off the mark, after all, the "Great Frilled Cock" comes to mind thinking about Amazing Atheist's position in the pecking order of this word ;)
Amazing Athiest has been giving his opinions for going on 10 years now. He's part of a very old group of edgy athiests from 2010. I wouldn't spend too much energy on him. :p I did learn a lot of facts from this video! So happy to see that!
I was an EMT for 20 years. I remember when the fire department didn't go to medical calls. To start with it kinda pissed the EMTs off. Like we couldn't do the job. But then when y'all started going to the calls at 3 in the morning and y'all would call us off. We started to appreciate y'all. Especially cold rainy nights. So thank y'all 😂
For the first point, I don't know how common it is, but when I overdosed, it was the fire department who responded first. Lovely gents. I'm sure if I had lost consciousness or had a cardiac event or compromised airway during that time, they would have responded appropriately, but given I was still lucid and functioning, they mostly just monitored me while waiting for EMTs. Mostly, I was surprised by how willing they were to talk to me, ask questions, and offer encouragement. I was very unprepared for the amount of humanity and respect I was given. It wasn't my first OD or crisis, and I don't remember much about the one EMTs responded to. I do remember the cops picking me up and blatantly shit talking me on the radio with me literally in the backseat, rolling their eyes, and being general ass holes when they responded to a friend who wanted me taken for evaluation at the ER--I hadn't even done anything at the time, she had just called and said she was worried I was a danger to myself. So that was not great. I'd have to say, of the three experiences, the firefighters were my favourite. Again, I wasn't really fully awake with the EMTs, so they were probably lovely too. But I didn't know firefighters even responded to those types of incidences until then. So thanks, firefighters, I appreciated it. When you're feeling like a fucking idiot for an impulsive action like that, and your emotions are all over the place, it's nice to have people who treat you with dignity and compassion. Also, when I was younger, my room caught on fire. They must have felt really bad for having to ask whether I did it on purpose while I was bawling my eyes out, because they came back with a teddy bear that I still have. I'm sure they give kids stuffed toys all the time, but it was a small act that gave me a lot of comfort at the time. I lost my art desk and all my books and some keepsakes, so having that bear was worth a lot. :)
I'd imagine making sure you're awake and lucid is very, very important when you OD. It also probably helps EMT's when they arrive on scene; if you were in extremely critical condition and needed something ASAP, it _might_ just be something worth knowing. Just a bit.
@@DefinitelyNotAnOsprey What would be worth knowing? Securing an airway? Yes, I'd agree. My surprise at the time was that firefighters were trained or sent to medical emergencies at all. You expect them to go to fires and things that need tall ladders. At the time, I had no idea they could be sent out to medical calls when EMTs were unavailable or further out. By contrast, frankly I wouldn't trust my city's police to bother with CPR, let alone ensure a patient was still able to breathe or not choking on their own vomit. But the cops in my city are especially idiots, so I don't presume every city experiences that level of incompetence. I'd still hesitate to send a cop to any mental health medical crisis, though, even if they did know basic first aid.
Personally, I really don’t like cops. I feel wary of firefighters given it’s not non-existent that there can be bias, but it helps when their job is actually to help the community, not just arrest people for anything they want.

Somehow, I've always lived near a fire house during my adult life. I can tell you that it doesn't matter if it was one of the biggest cities in America or a tiny town - fire trucks and ambulances were ALWAYS on the move. They never got a break - go back in and right back out. And this douche guy thinks fire fighters shouldn't get paid? Well gee, they're putting their lives on the line for us. They deserve high salaries more than the athletes and movie stars who get insane wealth sometimes for just being blessed with pretty genes.
I live down the street from one. My town, and a bunch of surrounding towns, have really low populations (like, each town definitely has less than 1000) but they're still moving a lot
For around 20 years I have lived on artery roads in my town. Meaning that to get anywhere in a hurry there is a good chance you would come down one of the 2 roads I am referring to. Once or twice a week they go right by me, another couple of times I can hear them nearby. Those are just the ones within earshot in a city of 35k (One professional and several volunteer). Granted they are somewhat on the loud side....
He complains of the amount of firefighters responding to medical calls, but should he ever need to be put on a stretcher, he will definitely see why firefighters respond to medical calls
I mean, I think a majority of the time having fire fighters go to medical calls is a waste of resources, both personal and equipment, and there are lots of studies that show for paramedics to be good & high performing they a high number of critical calls - thus the “paramedic” on every engine (or even every transport unit) model leads to negative patient outcomes. But I know that because of research. Fatty doesn’t. And if he can’t walk, it is going to take a minimum of a engine crew to get him out of the house. Maybe a ladder and an engine if he is on the 2nd floor. And there are lots of medical calls where you just need manpower, regardless of if the fire dept does medical stuff or not, just to get the patient out safely. Anything with the word “arrest”, anytime you can’t wheel in the stretcher, So on and so forth.
B Kane plus if you have someone that is in critical condition needing two paramedics its good to have someone there that can drive for them such as a fireman. I’ve seen it happen many times.
What People tend to forget is that unexspected stuff can happen. Where I live we had a strong storm from an unusual direction which raised the sea level by 2,5 metres(8 foot) and because of the many volunteer fire departments they still managed to respond to everything and prevented a lot of damage even though they were fighting the sea. A storm like that last happend around 100 years ago and im still fascinated how well everything was handled.
I had firefighters respond when my shoulder completely dislocated. I went into shock and was rendered unable think straight. I couldn't even form a sentence and am still grateful to them
and how is this argument connected to "firefighters are not overrated"? Okay, we get it, you want to make a personal attack... and you disagree that firefighters are overrated because...?
@@llVIU I like people who are trained to deal with intricately delicate and dangerous situations to be the people directly employed and staffed to therein deal with those situations. Individuals at the ready, at any moment, to be kitted up and ready to rock and deal with as many contingencies as possible to be at the scene to then deal with them.
We had the beginnings of an electrical fire in our attic at 11pm couple months ago. FD got there in 3 minutes flat. They had to crawl around in our hella cramped attic in the heat/humidity at night with all that gear on. (our attic is a miserable place to exist even under the best conditions... I'm 5ft 2 & can just barely stand up straight at the highest point. so FD is having to crawl around up there in the heat and the smoke, stepping on rafters and crawling over duct work...) But they found the main problem quick af with their thermal cameras or whatever and got it taken care of. Even made a solid effort to use as little water or whatever as possible to minimize or completely avoid water damage inside our house. The damage was very minimal overall and the cleaning plus repairs were done within a month and we were back in our house. Firefighters are great. They keep your house from burning down and sometimes when they can't do that, they save your pets from a burning building. Plus, they're never going to arrest or shoot you. So like... what's not to like?
A few years ago we had a carbon monoxide leak in our rental. Called them at 2am and they were there in minutes while we were all huddled in my car for warmth. They went through the house and found the source, which was a faulty flume on our water heater. They stayed a bit to make sure we were all okay (we were all asleep when the alarm went off so we were kinda dazed and uneasy) and were super caring even though we definitely woke them up lol

My dad, a firefighter for many years in Denmark.

This is definitely the kind of dude who would yell at a group of firefighters at a grocery store buying food.
I agree, also...
YAY! SLOTH PFP!

@@lovelight6973 Some people think that they pay our salaries and feel so inclined to chime in during every day activities.

@@jeffreyfreeland5942 firefighters also do fire safety inspections and work for prevention as well
@@XiaoYueMao Aren't the safety inspections enforcing codes?
Ultimately the amount of paid firefighters vs volunteer is still in the 30% percent range anyhow

also you: why are my taxes so high?
@@llVIU also you: why did my house burn down?

Yup. I second that bro.
And the number of volunteers are dropping sharply year over year, as is their budgets, forcing them to do more with less.
That’s right. Speaking from 20 yeas experience. When you’re a volunteer in a small town you more than likely know the persons who’s house you put out or are pulling out of a wrecked car or doing CPR on. Makes it even tougher.

That "people die 6ft from their front door and we really wanna prevent that from happening"
Took me out.. my heart❤
Heartbreaking
Never once in my life have i thought, oh thank god the youtubers are here.
I'd call a firefighter 100% before I'd even think of calling the police.
And this is why we all love firefighters! They are the best of us!
They sound so awesome it’s actually hard to believe what absolute legends
And I bet each and every one of them was the type of guy who never said anything about being a hero, and just called it " doing our job" because no real hero will say they are a hero. They might deflect that title to another coworker, but not personally say it. This guy talking shit about firemen obviously enjoys living in a place that is up to fire code, and safe. @@AsifIcarebear3 I highly suggest you watch his video.
His inflammatory delivery aside, his arguments are basically:
I have seen firefighters have paramedic trained firefighters on trucks, and they come out when ambulance isn't available. They make a difference

growing up my next door neighbor was a mountain of a man I had incredible respect for even long before I knew he was a retired fire fighter. I had one FF in front of me holding my hands in case I passed out and one behind me. yeah so not-so-fun- fact,
The new training method for house fires here in The Netherlands actually teachest us: If noone's inside the building, you're not going in either.
Thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication 🙃

I can't remember a time we had a medical emergency at my workplace and a firetruck wasn't the first vehicle on scene. Thank you guys for all you do!

Here's a wild idea: Maybe if the ambulance services weren't brutally defunded to give tax cuts millionaires, the firefighters (going outside of the scope of their work) wouldn't be the first ones on scene.
When it comes to medical emergencies I prefer a 10 minute ambulance response timeover a 20 minute firefighter response time myself.

...don't forget the medical calls.
There are the dedicated first responders, but you still fall into the same issues with rural areas where the few who live super close either aren't on call that day or have ended up far enough away that the fire fighters would have a significantly quicker response time
I work at a petrol station, they also come for fuel leaks, and LPG leaks
Your burps tasting like you just farted out of your own mouth? That literally sounds so gross I’d probably prefer the pain. Life is seriously gross.
Though that indigestion could lead to acid reflux which could trigger asthma attack.

But then when y'all started going to the calls at 3 in the morning and y'all would call us off. We started to appreciate y'all. Especially cold rainy nights. So thank y'all 😂
Anybody who is willing to run into a burning building to save my ass automatically gets my respect.
anyone who risk their lives to save others are heroes.
Sounds like you've been through a lot. I hope life's going better for you. Your gratitude really made my day a lot less shitty. Thank you!
That’s the thing, The amazing atheist is a jealous asshole who doesn’t value anyone’s life but his. He kinda is an ambassador for all atheistic f***s who’s moral compasses are completely askew to the point that self-sacrifice and selflessness is completely absent. Thank you for your comment.

Somehow, I've always lived near a fire house during my adult life. I can tell you that it doesn't matter if it was one of the biggest cities in America or a tiny town - fire trucks and ambulances were ALWAYS on the move. They never got a break - go back in and right back out.

I live down the street from one. My town, and a bunch of surrounding towns, have really low populations (like, each town definitely has less than 1000) but they're still moving a lot
@Dave N surprise, I'm writing from INSIDE your house!
That dude will even complain and question them about why they even brought the rig.
Haha, 10 years in EMS and I ALWAYS lift with my Fireman
Yeah to lug his fat a.. around.

We had the beginnings of an electrical fire in our attic at 11pm couple months ago. FD got there in 3 minutes flat. They had to crawl around in our hella cramped attic in the heat/humidity at night with all that gear on. (our attic is a miserable place to exist even under the best conditions... Even made a solid effort to use as little water or whatever as possible to minimize or completely avoid water damage inside our house. The damage was very minimal overall and the cleaning plus repairs were done within a month and we were back in our house. Firefighters are great.
