That thing about gasoline vapor: funny story.
Long years ago I worked for a place where there was one guy who was always going up to his cabin. One day in late summer he went up and cut down some shrubs and ended up with a pile of brush to get rid of. This was the northwoods and everything was nice and warm and green and humid. So he went and got his can of gas from the shed and splashed it all over the brush pile, then remembered his matches were in the cabin.
Scene: The brush is lying in a low spot, there is NO wind but it's warm. It takes him a couple of minutes to locate his matches and return. Our hero is wearing a T shirt, shorts, and sneakers. He walks up to the brush pile and lights a match to toss it in.
Well, in the time that he was gone, the gasoline vapors crawled all over that low area and when that lit match reached them, FOOM.
I saw him at work a few days later. His legs were bandaged and his face was red. Oh, and he was missing arm hair, eyebrows, and his head hair was a bit shorter.
We all started calling him "Sparky" after that.

      @charlie15627 Před rokem +110

      True story
I had a gas can of old nasty kerosene, old motor oil and the like. I used it for burning brush piles and the like. It was fairly safe since nothing in it produced explosive vapors.
Unbeknownst to me, someone had added a bunch of old gasoline to the can. So when I grabbed it to burn a brush pile and it seemed a lot heavier than I expected, I didn’t think to much of it. I just dowsed a liberal amount on the brush, put the van down well away from the pile and walked back to it with my lighter.
I was expecting it to light rather slowly, like an oil lamp, so I got down real low and close to light it. I tried to light a dried leaf or twig or something (I don’t remember now what). I saw the flames flaring away from the lighter before the flame even contacted the material. Seeing that, I managed to turn partway and start to lunge away before the concussion hit me.
I landed probably ten yards away from the brush pile and ended my flight with a roll. I still had flames coming off one of my pants legs and so I rolled again. The flames still persisted so I smothered it with a couple handfuls of dirt real fast. It wasn’t the first time I’d blown myself up and so it had some experience with these things.
All in all, I walked away from it largely unscathed. I’d lost one of my sandals and had a couple chunks missing from one of my shins but that was it. We did find my sandal about six months later in a bush thirty yards from the burn pit and I’ve still got the scars on my shin.
Ever since that day, I treat every excelerant as though it could explode and light every brush fire with a lit stick. I could have ended up a lot worse.

As Albert Einstein may have never actually said: "there are 2 things that are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and im not sure about the universe". I work construction and for decades there was an arms race between stupid DIY'ers and electrical manufactures because when fuses existed people would replace them with coins or random chunks of metal, then when breakers first came out people would fasten the breaker in the "on" position so it would never trip, both resulted in the wiring getting overloaded until it burned up and the safety the fuse/breaker provided by tripping when it was overloaded was thwarted by stupid people. Even after PSA's, warnings, and amended DIY books were put out there people kept doing it. They now make breakers that trip internally so even if you fasten the handle in the on position it will still trip like its supposed to. People started buying oversized breakers to work around that, putting 20 or even 30 amp breakers on circuits only rated at 15 or 20 amps so now they're starting to restrict the sale of 30 amp breakers to prevent DIY'ers from doing that, soon you may only be able to buy them at wholesale stores that cater to professional contractors. Electrical engineers are some of the smartest engineers around, it's one of the hardest engineering degrees to get and one of the highest paying, and idiots do whatever they can to try and outsmart them.

A few things. One, gas expires after a few months so that tub is going to waste. Two, shortages are often caused by people thinking there is a shortage, buying up all of the product which thereby creates an actual shortage (like the toilet paper). Three, don't store fuel in bad containers, and stop reinventing the jerry can. It was the best design by far and it came out in WWII. Anti-leak nozzles actually lead to far more leaking.

    • @spvillano

The fuel expires largely due to evaporation of volatiles. So, properly sealed containers with minimal air present, the fuel will last a lot longer.

I've always bought by the case, saves me many trips to the store, the few trips are for things like milk, bread and eggs. Although, in a pinch, I can and do make homemade bread. Can't quite manage the milk and eggs, being the wrong species and all.

The one at 2:08 was a nitrous oxide bottle. I remember when it hit the internet in the long ago, IIRC, the bottle was just filled (over filled probably. No, they dont fill them to the top, thats how you blow up your bottle) and the tank heater was on. The tank heater is a electric blanket like device that wraps around the bottle. As the bottle is discharged the reduction in pressure and liquid sublimating into gas causes the vessel to get cold (just like how the evaporator of your AC makes cold). The cold temperature causes the internal pressure of the system to drop since its approaching the temperature of liquid nitrogen, ergo the liquid doesnt want to boil off into gas (the interior temperature can be far colder than the skin temp of the bottle, they are quite thick as the pressure inside the tank should be around 750psi and 70F). So a common trick is to used a bottle heater which warms the bottle helping the liquid stay well over the boiling point thus keeping the pressure high. Good pressure means good flow through the lines, good flow through the lines means smooth nitrous boost, smooth nitrous boost means collectin them pinks son! (Seriously, you dont need to be having your N2O system hooked up and operating while in LA traffic.....you just dont....).
So yeah, dude either had his heater on, or had an overfilled/improperly-filled bottle, or could have had a tank that hadnt been hydro tested in a while and the place that filled it didnt check the last test date stamped in to the bottle (big no no. Like really big no no, luckily it was only N2O), or some combination of those up to and including all three. The good news is nitrous oxide isnt really that flammable at atmospheric pressures and just floating around the environment. Sure, you could say, take a lung full of N2O and blow into a lit cigarette, and the cigarette will start burning hotter with a small bright flame. But you are forcing an increased flow over a hot ember. Its the fact there is a hot ember and the N2O stays in contact with it long enough for the magic to happen that it does anything, however it wont flash back down the cigarette and blow up your lungs.
"Bullpocky! If it wasnt super explosive why do cars get a boost when I hit the stage 2 button on my civics steering wheel, yo?!" I hear you say. Well, son, the answer is activation energy. The nitrogen twins really like hanging out with the oxygen and since nitrogen isnt a fuel, and isnt hot, there is nothing for the oxygen to oxidize. Technically it already did when it shacked up with the nitro-twins. However....Things get spicy when you inject it into an engine. Whether its a wet shot, dry shot, intake, or direct port injected, eventually that cute N2O thrupple is going to start swinging with gasoline. As they're shoved into a small hot space, the air, N2O, and gasoline droplets get squeezed closer and closer together until a spark happens between. Suddenly chamber pressures skyrocket, everyone is slamming into each other, the nitro-twins are sick and tired of oxygen always wanting to bond with someone more energetic, and the relationship decomposes. Do to the shock of this breakup oxygen decides 'you know what! I dont need them! I got these benzene babes rubbing up on me, its hot in here, Im gonna take off all my cloths!' and begins bonding with the gasoline, fueling (technically oxidizing) the tumultuous deflagration causing the pressures and temperatures to raise even faster. This pushes the piston down harder netting more power output for a given combustion cylinder volume. Poor nitrogen is just running around getting in everyones way (so you dont blow your heads into the next county or weld the piston to the cylinder walls....or literally light the metal on fire. Yes its possible. That is why we dont inject pure oxygen into engines. Every bit of hot oil or grease would be begging to light the fuse on an engine block fire if we used pure O2, and it wouldnt remain stable enough to survive the compression stroke anyways. Nitrogen keeps oxygen stable before ignition, and gets in the way after detonation to help regulate how fast/hot the reaction occurs). And that son, is how nitrous works. Now take that bottle out of your ricerocket before you get pulled over and ticketed. Yes, in many areas it is illegal to have the bottle, hooked up and especially valve open on public roads. You shouldnt be using it in uncontrolled scenarios anyways. Thats how people die. You're not cool. You are the unattractive kind of dangerous and offputting kind of reckless. And this is coming from a former tuner. So knock it off!

When I heard that people were filling up Kroger bags with gas, the 4 things that went through my mind were:
    1. They do realize that plastic bags don't count as 'approved containers', right?
    2. All it takes is for the bag to get one tiny rip and all that gas money will be wasted.
    3. It would be a bit of a hassle to get the gas from the bag to the tank. You would at least need a funnel and a way to poke a hole in the bag, since pouring from the top would be messy.
    4. The shortage was caused by a hacking incident. Most companies get that fixed by the next day. As far as I know, any outages would be caused by idiots sucking the gas stations dry.

It is now my personal headcanon, that all those bad guys in all those movies who's car gets blown up by a single bullet, is simply hoarding gas in plastic bags. Like I'm pretty sure most movie explosions were historically done with bags of gas, because dynamite simply wasn't... IDK 'flashy' enough. You simply don't get that comically oversized fireball explosion with real explosives so you have to use bags of gas. And these people are transporting them in their cars. That's one way to earn a Darwin Award.

My great grandfather was burned horribly when he was wrapping gasoline soaked rags to thaw out water pipes while he was smoking.
Third and fourth degree burns across almost 90% of his body. Worst part it was in a rural area in a snowstorm in Louisiana. Took the ambulance 3 hours to get there and another 3 to get him to the hospital.
The doctors could see his heart and lungs functioning through his rib cage. But by a miracle he lived.
Still smoked after that too sadly.

@@80krauser It took me a couple of times reading the comment to realize that wrapping gasoline rags around a pipe would actually help cool the pipes even more (unless you lit the rags on fire?) because the gasoline would draw heat out of the pipe to vaporize the gas.
It's kind of like using rubbing alcohol cloths to cool an extreme fever (which is another technique that should only be done with sufficient ventilation like a fan and an open window).
