- Today, we examine a set of Absolute Black oval chainrings in size 52/36. We explore the subjective aspects of riding with oval chainrings and leave the objective and science based reviews to folks like Dylan Johnson. Check out his channel here:

thanks for the excellent review! you answered just the questions I had in mind, especially them rewarding good posture and visa versa.
Thanks for the video! It was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. I’m excited to try these out. I’m subscribing. See you on Bike Tawk Jeremy!
Great video and observations thanks. Getting mine this week and intrigued to try them.
A very concise, honest sounding review. I've been looking at these ring sets in order to go sub compact as I'm old and live in a place of nothing but steep hills. I think I'll get them now. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback! I think you'll enjoy them.
Thanks for an honest Tip!!!!..take care!!!
Very good review. On an aside, I watched your channel a couple of years or so ago, and then lost track of it, so this is the first video I've seen since then. Holy cow, has the bogeyman ever gotten tall!
Haha - thanks. Yeah, he's gotten a wee bit bigger. :-). And stronger too!
Just came across this video. I have Absolute Black chainrings on two bikes. Agree that these won't make a cyclist faster/better. My subjective impression is that I'm pedaling in a circle and my stroke 'feels' better than with regular chainrings. I like them!
Great video
Nice comment though... I will closely watch your upcoming vlogs 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video guys. Good overview pre-purchase. Any issues with etap?
None so far. Just make sure that front mech is high enough when you set it up.
I've a 1x11 on my mtb. If I install a oval do I have to readjust the rear shifter and chain?
You shouldn't have to. If there is any problem, it would only be if there is a really large pie plate on the back. Even then, I would advise to put on a new chain anyway so there are no issues from worn components.
Thanks for the feedback on the rings! Another great reason... and the reason I purchased them (should be here nest week) is that I want to change from a shimano 52/36 to a more compact 50/34, but don't want to loose all the benefits of the 52/36. Also during what seems like a continued bike part shortage June of 2022, I am unable to locate a 50 tooth chainring and don't want to replace my complete r8000 Ultegra crankset.
"The Boogie man was quiet as usual... but that's okay". 😂😂😂
... and the poor Boogie man is just standing next to him and quietly starting at the lens.
He's a bit quiet. Check out the newest video and the upcoming race videos. He actually speaks!
@@TacomaCyclist Thank you for the reply. I watched the video. A perfectly normal (and I would say, more articulate than most people) young man. It's just the nickname - Boogieman, combined with his on-camera quietude.
Haha. That's the thing with him. He really is very quiet in real life. And he got that nickname because I told him from an early age that the Boogeyman should be afraid of him. Looks to have come true...😎
@@TacomaCyclist :) To paraphrase his quietude, he's a no-nonsense person, and / or is introverted. I deem both as highly valuable assets. It's easy to presume that a quiet person is a hateful, angry or scheming person, but that does not at all have to be true, as you & Boogeyman just demonstrated. I also expect, he's an IQ way above the average of 98. I also expect him to sport admirable qualities like empathy for animals or chivalry that has been lost to masses since the sexual so-called sexual "revolution".
i love this kind of detailed videos. i have been trying to set up mine on my 2020 Cannondale EVO 11 SPEED ETAP. I cannot and my LBS mechanics are recommending i go back to round rings. the biggest issue is going from small to big ring. it is sloppy and unpredictable. sometimes it works and others it does not. i have the same cranks as you do. can you share some of the adjustments you made to make it work?
thank you
I had to adjust the pitch of my front mech using the little nub on the back. It takes a little trial and error, but about 10 minutes and you should be good.
Hilltop still a beast to climb, oval chain ring or Not. 🙊
Boogeyman seems like a really scary person.
He is. If you see him behind you, it's too late.
@@TacomaCyclist oh my god. Candyman, Candyman,, Candyman.... ahhhhh.
