Steve Wilks is being scapegoated. Let's talk about how As a head coach and OC Shanahan has blew a lead in the Superbowl for a third time. Defense played well the whole game. Held them to just three points in the first half. Offense gotta have waaaay more then ten points against a QB like Mahomes to safely put em away.

LEAD implies your offense is up and your defense has to defend the lead.
The offense could have done better but they did their job and took the lead 3 times and had a lead with a few minutes left and took the lead in overtime.
The defense hasn’t been able to keep the lead it’s not the offenses job to stop Mahomes.
He’s not without blame of course, but the whole idea is the OC gets you the DC the lead. That’s their job.

So giving up 260 yards rushing to the Cardinals should be ignored? Forcing Minny and Cincy to punt 1 time each in those games should be ignored? I swear people are so clueless about actual; facts. Yes, his defense held KC to 19 points in 4 quarters. Here is a fun fact, KC's offense is not that good. They averaged 21.8 ppg this year. Wilks did a fantastic job play calling but then switched up his scheme. Why did he switch? Once he switched, Mahomes and Kelce lit him up. That happened in the 4th and OT. They literally showed you a play of the scheme he kept running. Did you even watch the game?

Exactly. I watched every single 49er game from start to finish. Our defense underachieved. Look at our roster. All pros at every level. In the superbowl we played great. But giving up 26 ppg in the playoffs with that roster? We were lucky to even be at the Superbowl.
On the flip side, Kyle cost us a championship. At the end of the year, our offense took a step back. Kittle, Deebo, Aiyuk had a total of 8 catches in the superbowl. He didn’t scheme properly. Our offense is way too talented for that bs.

  • @RickNyks

Imagine holding Patrick Mahomes to 16 points through 4 quarters, and you get fired. But the guy running the offense can't score more than 16 through 4 quarters but stays. Then add on the leads he's blown prior, and it's most definitely not the defense that was the issue.

Kyle is a great coach up until he gets to the SB. He tries to be the smartest guy in the room and when teams are at that level, the other coach is only focused on winning but kyle wants to win in style.
The head coach isnt going to fire himself and someone had to get the blame and he is on the offensive side so its the other side that has to be the problem even though the niners had multiple opportunities to win the game but didnt. Would a hot shot young gun DC do a better job with the 49ers D? Probably, but this was all on Shanahan - not just for the anemic performance of Aiyuk, Deebo, & Kittle in the SB. But for what Acho (rightfully) said, why the f*ck would you hire a DC whose scheme you don't agree with? It wasn't like Shanahan didn't know that Wilks doesn't prefer Seattle Cover 3 (that Shanahan does). It'd be like Andy Reid deciding to hire an OC that would emphasize a heavy run game and turn Mahomes into a game manager (like Trent Dilfer with the 2000 Ravens) for the upcoming 2024 season.

They clearly didn't watch the Niners play this season. Just keep on saying they got the top 3 defense according to the stats.
This season, the defense stats were good only because the offense put up so many points from the start.
If you watched the whole game, the whole season, you would know it was not the top tier defense from the past.
But with that being said, Wilks is not the main reason for the SB loss.
The muffed punt (what is it with the Niners and muffed punts in big games), Dre's injury and Kyle's odd play calling in the 3rd quarter and the OT decision are the bigger reasons.

Now the narrative is that Wilks is a scapegoat, but anyone who's closely followed the Niners the past 4 or 5 years will tell you the defense has regressed under Wilks and his philosophy doesn't line up with what gave them success under Robert Saleh or Demeco Ryans.
