  • Hierarchy and an established chain of command is crucial for any cabin crew team. This is for safety onboard during normal and abnormal flights, and especially in any emergency situation. However, on a long-haul flight, with so many crew, it may be slightly more complicated. Let’s examine how things are structured in today’s video!

I didn't know anything other than there was a purser and the other flight attendants. When I was younger, it was my dream to become a flight attendant. In 1995, the year I graduated high school, I was told I was "too tall."

My airline i work at, here is the cabin crew seniority chain... From Junior FA, to Senior FA, to Cabin 1 (in command on narrow body aircraft), then Maitre'D Cabin (for wide body) and Purser / Flight Service Manager. Sometimes Purser/FSM also in charge on narrow body as well, if they're not present, then Cabin 1 will take over..

Being ground crew, I knew the hirearchy, and that's how aviation works; even at ground in case of an emergency, etc.

Really can't generalize this topic. I varies greatly by carrier and country. For cabin crew in particular in the US, a lot of this doesn't apply. A junior crew can easily be assigned at the lead, purser etc if required.

My overseas trips have usually been smooth, but if I have an issue, I would ask to speak to the Pursuer. Have a few friends who became FA after high school, and in those times overseas layovers were 2-3 days long.

On Singapore Airlines, aren't there different colors of kebayas for the crew levels? I vaguely remember that the Chef de Cabine on Air France wears a coral colored dress as opposed to the blue the rest of the staff wear but that was flying them years ago.

Singapore Airlines does indeed have different coloured uniforms for their cabin crew depending on their position in the hierarchy.

Garuda Indonesia as well. Orange and green for flight stewardess, purple for Maitre'D Cabin, and Blue for Purser/FSM. While for male flight attendants no differentiation in uniform, all wear the same color

I remember flying on Qantas in 1999 and the senior FA introduced himself as the Cabin Service Director. On US airlines, I always remember the senior FA introducing themselves as the Pursuer, at least on United and American. Is this accurate?

British Airways has scrapped seniority for cabin crew and they only have 2 seniors on all long haul aircraft except the A380 which has 3. I have 35 years seniority with the airline which counts for nothing in BA.

Pre covid long serving cabin crew enjoyed many privileges over new starters, better pay, longer layovers etc, So sorry the Gravy train has pulled out.

I was once told that the A380's galleys are smaller on the top-deck, so that's where the daintier stewardesses are assigned. Probably not true!
