Most of us have cloudy ice balls ... and we have all asked "Can I get a clear ice ball from this mold." We now know the answer. Uncle Pete doing the hard work for us all.

I’ve wondered for a while about this, I have those molds too. Thanks for doing the hard work for the rest of us!

Wow, cabin fever ice rabbit hole! So fun.
I have those very same molds. One time I thought I'd actually made a clear ice globe in one of them only to find out that it was full of water. Great if you want instant over dilution for your cocktail.

I appreciate your dedication to the craft. I think there was also a bit of an issue with the mold not being insulated.

Oh interesting. I have a coffee cup that fits what looks like that exact same mold tightly. So will try drilling holes in the mold like you did and see how I get on!

UNCLE PETE!!! This was def fun!!! Ice balls are def sort of hard to make. I have an insulated tumbler that I use, and it seems to work ok. Cubes, no problem. Spheres, level 2!!! CHEERS!!!!

I wonder if you printed the "cup" in TPU if it would work better. The TPU can flex and expand with the ice so maybe it won't break

Oh maybe! I am new to 3 printing, I'll have to look up TPU, but thanks for the tip!

Well, I've watched a lot of videos about clear ice, you are right this is the worst way to make clear ice. I'm just gonna be OK with cloudy ice.

I think you would have had better luck if you hadn't drilled the holes in the bottom of the mold. If you filled the mold with water, and then flipped it over quickly into an already-water-filled holder, as per the traditional method for making clear ice. The extra hole on top (instead of only one "escape hole" at the bottom) is definitely what caused the cloudiness on top.

The geometry of the mold isn’t really conducive to that, I have done that with other molds though.

If you want clear ice, don't use water straight out of the tap. You have to boil it first to get rid of all the dissolved gasses, cloudiness is caused by tiny gas bubbles forming as the ice freezes.
