- Slap That Bass! by Slick Joe Fick Out Now

► Check out this two-minute video to hear Joe’s tour through the history of slap bass!
THE STORY OF THIS VIDEO:
Nashville-based Slick Joe Fick is obsessed with slap bass and has an encyclopedic knowledge of its history and techniques. At the end of our session filming lessons with Joe, I thought I would put him to the test by asking him to do something without any warning. The idea was to showcase Joe’s favourite slap bass techniques and players in just two minutes. Joe was completely unprepared, but absolutely nailed it! Playing bass can be hard enough, but to give a 2-minute history whilst talking and playing happening at the same time, is really something special.
Of course, there are numerous notable slap bass artists that we missed in the video, but we hope you enjoy learning about a few of Joe’s favourite bassists and hearing his incredible playing!
MEET SLICK JOE FICK
Known as the Energizer Bunny of the slap bass world due to his virtuosic technique, ‘Slick’ Joe Fick is one of Nashville’s most in-demand bassists. Joe has performed or recorded with Sonny Burgess, James Burton, D.J. Fontana, Wanda Jackson, the Jordanaires, Boots Randolph, and many more. Slick Joe portrayed Elvis Presley’s bass player, Bill Black, in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic ‘Walk the Line’ and played upright bass on the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 film ‘Elvis’ (Warner Bros) starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Joe currently wows audiences with his band Kelley’s Heroes 5 nights a week at Robert’s Western World on Lower Broadway in downtown Nashville. Be sure to pay them a visit to see his dazzling slap chops in action!
We are thrilled to introduce Slick Joe Fick as our newest course tutor at DDB. His full-length online course Slap That Bass! is out now: courses.discoverdoublebass.co...

#SlapThatBass - Hudba
Over 30 years playing electric bass and I made the switch to upright about 8 months ago. These slap techniques just amaze me. Still trying to figure them out
If you're ever in Nashville, you have to go to Robert's Western World and see Joe and Kelly's Heroes. INSANELY GOOD
They are the best and I would love to visit Robert's. When I was in Nashville we didn't have time, but we were joined by Kelley's Heroes in the studio for Joe's course videos and they were incredible! They are in a video we are sharing next week and Luke takes the coolest guitar solo I've ever heard! 😎
I saw Joe perform several years ago and he literally blew me away. He is the best bass player alive in my opinion. He is a one man Cirque du Soleil of bass playing. I have never seen such a talented musician put so much energy into a performance. I couldn't get to sleep that night after his show I was so wound up.
That’s amazing to hear! He’s a true artist.
Slapping is so cool. My first intro to the slap style was watcing Keith Picot ( a canadian master of the slap ) . I had front row seats and it was like watching a majic show. I could not for the life of me figure out what or how he was making all these wonderful sounds. I was hooked. Sold my electric and bought an upright shortly after. My slapping is not so good but love listening to those that can. ....wayne
That's great to hear Wayne! I've not heard of Keith Picot but will keep an eye out for his playing. Sounds like an incredible concert and I know what you mean about seeming like magic!
A very impressive player. Such a great sound. His poor ole bass looks like it's had a good bit of slapping over the years!
Looking forward to the tutorials. Thanks!
Yes, that bass has been slapped hard! We take a good luck at it in our upcoming interview on his gear choices which will be on our Channel soon.
Yes!! You finally had a slap player on!
Yes, it's been a long time coming and now I'm so excited to share more! Joe's just incredible.
It would be terrific to add all this techniques in my double bassist toolbox. Really beautiful and energising.
So glad you enjoyed it Danilo :-)
Great demonstrations of the various Slap and Galloping bass. Cheers to all of the late greats who invented Slap-@-Billity. Great for Jazz-@-Billy also.
Me too!! But I could listen to you all day.
That was a ton of fun. Thanks!
I have watched Joe play dozens of times and I am always extremely amazed. To see him demonstrate these different patterns solo and up close brings everything into focus. Truly enjoyed this!
Glad you enjoyed it. We are huge fans of Joe!
Have seen Joe with his guys at Roberts and they are phenomenal! If you’re in Nashville, you’ve got to see them. Great job Joe!!
yeeeahhhhh!!!! Nice Slap!!
Joe Fick, the hardest working man on Lower Broad. That was a great video. I'm going keep an eye out for this course.
Brilliant once again, Geoff! Love this!
Fantastic!
Was searching for a tutorial on this sound on a electric bass, i stayed because you have new fan! 🫡
Fantastic! If only I could see it in slow motion!
Man - y’all couldn’t have picked a better slap player to give lessons on your site. Great job Discover Double Bass!
Thanks Keith, I was so thrilled that Joe agreed to join us. :-)
Excellent. Thanks
a musical magic trick, love it
Best slapping technique vid! Thanks.
It's awesome! I love the sound!
BRAVO! I literally clapped at my desk :D thank you for such an excellent demonstration of the variety of uses of this technique. This is GOLD for arrangers like myself who don't play the instrument but want to use the technique in music.
Glad it was helpful! Joe's a star and it was so inspiring to see him come up with this.
Wow!! Bravo.
Awesome video! A few times I was like, "Whoa there, overzealous camera operator, focus on the right hand in a slapping video!" Yes, we get it, he has a Western shirt on. Also, fast technique videos can be filmed at 60fps or 120fps so half-speed playback is smoother. Even so, it's still just about the best little slap primer I've seen.
Glad you enjoyed it! :-)
Wow that was amazing! Masterful and very inspiring! Thank you 🙏
You are so welcome! :-)
Oh yes, looking forward to this one, been a fan of Joe's playing for years
So glad you're also a fan :-)
Can’t wait for the new course 👍🏻
Thanks, we are really excited about this one and can't wait to share on Monday. :-)
wow ... amazing .... thak you
this was practice rehearsal and nostalgia under 2 and half minutes, thank you very much.
nah that was half of the video was amazement and confusion. I cant await to pick up an upright again!
Bro....... I miss slapping an upright! You're so good bro!!!!
Great bassplayer, greetings from the Netherlands
A true master.
Phenomenal vid
Thanks so much. We were so excited to share this one!
Robert’s western world 6-10 wed - sat !! One of the best players to see in Nashville / anywhere!! Such a huge inspiration to me esp with Kelley’s heroes an as well as David grahams Eskimo brothers your able catch joe with them an it’s awesome!!
I’ve still not been but would love to go!
I love this so much!!
Thanks so much for watching :-)
He really knows his onions!!!
He lives for slap bass!
I MUST learn how to do this!
Joe is the best there ever will be!
Brilliant Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Unglaublich. Ich bin begeistert 😍
LOVE IT
☺️
Not to mention . . . stand up on that bass!!!
I can't believe we didn't ask him to do it in the video! That would have been the cherry on top! :-)
In Germany we say: "Ganz grosses Tennis!" 🤩
You should also mention Joe Zinkan, another slap ace of the good ol' days 😎
Absolutely! He was incredible.
Nice! Very nice!👍👍👍
Gteetingds from a death metal guy 😊
So bad ass man
I have been playing bass guitar for about 15 years now, and never really took to slap very well. This video introduced me to a whole new world of upright slap, and I am enjoying it so much more.
that's great to hear! Slap on the upright has such a special sound, it's hard not to love! :-)
So much skill for 'not alot of sound.'
I have read that the bass can also be viewed as a percussion instrument. No doubt about that from this demonstration!
Yes, it's so clear in this video! I didn't ask Joe if he plays drums, but I bet he would be a mean drummer!
Every instrument should be viewed as a percussion instrument, imo
Rhythm is more important than notes
GREAT Vid !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now , could you pass that imformation on to the similac babies playing eletric bass , because there seems to be a mix up between Thumping & Slapping . Once again people , Electric Players ( Thump ) , Upright Players (Slap) !!!!!!
F clef legend.
Who the hell....You are fantastic
Milt Hinton.
Will he be doing a slap course on Discover Double Bass?
Yes, it's out on Monday at discoverdoublebass.com
Great news!!!
Joe Fick is the baddest upright slap player on the planet!!!
Agreed!
Davie504 approves
I would love to see a Davie504 and Slick Joe Fick slap bass battle!🤯
If I played what he's just played my right hand would be unusable for like a month. Guy's got fingers of steel.
Gut strings and a light touch. It doesn't take much effort to make the sound, in fact, being completely relaxed is essential for the flow and the sound. You would be fine once you got it.
Looks like the copper wound gut on A and E? Those are pretty abrasive if that’s what they are.
@@lowtone9 I see plain gut except for the E string. It’s a great sound but it has a lot of limitations if you want to play a wide variety of genres and styles. I was a gut guy for a decade and loved the sound but I eventually had to go steel to keep the gigs consistent.
These are gut strings ?
Yes. We have a full rig rundown coming soon 👍
Be really cool to get you with an Indian Tabla drummer and see what happens
Show...
love slik joe, but i prefer good ol' Jake Erwin's style of slap, so much more swing in it...czcams.com/video/SWQKKRNNqoI/video.html
Jake is an awesome player!
@davie504 check this out :)
Over 30 years playing electric bass and I made the switch to upright about 8 months ago. These slap techniques just amaze me. Still trying to figure them out
