    Ernest Jones had the best analogy at the time and it still holds true today; the pen knife and the handkerchief; which we translated to ball on a string. You take any object and tie it to a string and twirl it; you will experience a nice G force pulling on the object that is tied and you will feel how your arm reacts to that pull to keep the object going; this is the feel you want to have at the end of that driver head; and the center point is the spot between your clavicles called the sternal notch. So use the ball on the string to clip the tip of the tee on the way up and into the direction you want to start the flight of the ball like I show you here and enjoy smoking that driver like you knew you could! Shawn

    Greetings from Nottingham in the UK Shawn, After finding your channel the other night, I find your videos extremely easy and simple to follow. I love your simple teaching method, its no nonsense and to the point :) I went to my local driving range today and tried the see the blur and intermediate point keys together and things featured in this video and for the first time I found I was finding the middle of every club in my bag. It was really fun. Tiny draws and Fades with all my irons and all very straight. A couple of mishits but two balls later back hitting straight shots again. I was even finding the middle of Driver face with ease. I discovered however with my Driver (Nike Covert) I need more loft which I can manage with the wrench tool ^_^ (I tweeted a picture to you of my results after the session in which I used foot powder spray to show impact) Thank you so much for the epic videos and making my golf Fun. Good Golf :)

    Why has it taken me OVER 4 yrs to find your series of videos ? You're the ONLY one out there not only explaining , but changing the mindset / getting the student to ask themselves simple questions in their quest to , then producing the shot/action to achieve their goals . More so , your instructional videos , especially the ones with student Anna seeking to improve her game , are just as pertinent to those of use taking up the "past time " seriously . No editing , just pure unadulterated footage ( accident with mouse included ) to ensure that the experience is as real as it gets . Many thanks . We could all do with a "virtual Shawn Clement " in our ear every time we approach the tee ( NOT the ball ) asking us "what is it that you want to do , what is this particular goal to achieve in front of you ? )

    This is the single most important lesson I need at my stage with driver. I love the ball on the string demo, it gives a visual to the mystical swing plane otherwise unseen. Bobby Jones said clearly he didn't look at the ball but was only aware of it's location. This made me believe he had a spot behind the ball for target. This helped me for hitting up on the ball but caused early extension. Thanks for your insight and detailed lessons.

    It just dawned on me that Shawn could break some long drive records--from the left and right sides--as he enters into his 60s. His club speed to effort ratio should sustain his distances for years to come. I've recently adopted many of his ideas and I'm not only hitting the ball longer, but I also feel physically fine after a round. I've been watching your videos a lot lately and this is another great addition! I was hitting near the toe more lately after adjusting my swing from applying what I learned from your techniques and couldn't get it near the hosel to shank it even if I wanted to.. and your explanation made me realized that I may actually be doing something right .. I may be releasing more toward the target now rather than the ball because I'm drawing the ball with the driver now (used to hitting a fade) but couldn't figure out last week why I keep hitting in on the toe.. your experience in this video is totally relateable and how a little adjustment in your distance from the ball makes total sense.. I'll try it again at the range.. Thank you for sharing all your Wisdom!

    Radical way of thinking, indeed. Hardest thing for me to do over the last 20+ years, trying to swing UP with the driver. best I've ever been able to do make level contact. Spent an entire bucket the other day working on this and "center strike," and managed to hit a few up, with a LOT of "sky'd" shots, which, according to this video, means my swing was obviously bottoming out too far forward!
    Might sound funny, but when occasionally "drop kick" one, bouncing the driver off the ground behind the ball, it ALWAYS goes dead straight, high and down the middle. THAT'S where the bottom of my swing arc belongs, just not on the ground!

You know, in traditional setup/swing. they ask you take the club at ground level for a foot or so, with your left hand thru the hip level and move up to the top. So considering that the driver impact is several inches past what it would be for say a mid iron shot, and also considering that with the driver your hands stay behind the ball at impact, does this mean that your driver grip should not be a strong as for shorter clubs in order to square the clubface at the point of impact ( collection) ?

    This ball on a string concept is the exact reason I went from a 45.5” driver to a 43.5”. The longer club I felt i really had to swing flat and around my body. Was harder for me to hit “up” on the ball. The shorter club I feel like I’m swinging a bit more upright and it’s really easy to hit the ball with an upward attack angle. Hitting it much more solid and gained like 20 yards because I had better launch conditions.

    LOL!!! Mom always told me not to swing the club in the house or I would break something. When my driver is going bad I'm always trying to fit the arc of the swing to where I'm standing to the ball. That is probably why I hit under it so much. I have to let the driver swing and let it feel where it wants to go naturally and then move into the ball. Stand a little farther away and let gravity do it.

      Phạm Tùng smash factor is improved by consistently hitting the center of the face or sweet spot, whichever you prefer. That’s all smash factor is, if your smash factor is low, you’re likely hitting it all over the face. Hitting it all over the face is usually caused by swinging too hard relative to your balance.

      You’re very welcome. Get some face tape, they’re little stickers that stick on the club face, the ball will make an impression with every strike which will give you a visual reference. The human mind is an amazing thing, once it gets feedback it’s very often capable of figuring things out all by itself on a subconscious level. Rhythm and tempo are more important than anything else in the golf swing (once you have good mechanics and a good setup.) Watch the tour pros on television, they have tremendous balance, that’s how they can swing so fast and yet it looks effortless.

    Shawn great videos! I just used the weed wacker video, to radically change my swing. I just took it to the golf course and the guys I was playing with said wow you really can hit irons great. Well, yes thanks to Shawn Clement. This video I noticed your club starting point is well back of the ball. Like Moe Norman did? It seems the pros today place the driver right behind the ball. Do you play like in your video? I have had problems with hitting up, now I know how to do it thanks to you. What is happening to my 3 fairway shots (metal) is they always go low? I know you're not watching my swing but my mental picture is off or something, not sure what to do? Hit down, hit up, hit level? I took the hybrid out of the bag, just mentally not the right picture and got a three-iron. Thanks again

    do you use the same closed face technique/grip with driver as with the irons?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 5 lety +2

      Yes and No!! Driver is a different animal and it depends how draw biased it is! ALWAYS DELIVER TO THE TARGET FIRST, then see hiw it flies and make adjustments based on that and not based on your irons! Also, the face of the driver is bowed and looks more open than it actually is and messes with the eyes.

    Hey Shawn! With the driver the ball on the string is less vertical, is that the same for a 3w? If I'm trying to hit a draw do I move the ball back in my stance a little?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 4 lety +1

      Not as much as the irons Joseph; remember that it starts with the flight plan and then the set up has to match that flight plan. See “ball position bible shawn clement” on youtube and the “fairway wood” video on premium. Shawn

    One of the most ugly swings on youtube LOL, but looks like it works. So how do you have your weight distribution? Favouring the front foot? Like 40-60? Why do you almost stop at the top? Does it help you hit it better/longer?
