Historically Vietnamese used the mountain and jungle in the West of their country and in Lao and Cambodia as a safe haven to retreat to when facing powerful enemies. Those places are no longer safe havens now if they ended up fighting China again because the Chinese have effectively surrounded Viet Nam with their present in Lao and Cambodia. Also certain area in the Vietnamese highlands are under leases by the Chinese. Vietnamese youth has grown soft and complacent and would likely accept any government imposed by the Chinese as they seem to be content with the current kleptocracy that’s under Chinese influenced. I’m not speculating on the Chinese influence, this is the reality that many Vietnamese Communist Party members shared. Many have business dealings with China and their Chinese counterparts always know in advance what the Vietnamese leadership will do.

We didn't buy new chinese tank, because they're crap
T-90S/SK wasn't to replace the T-54/55 at this time because only 64 of them is on the ground now. Instead, upgraded version of T-54/55 and T-62 (yes, we do have T-62 and you didn't even know about that) is the backbone of the armored branch. Upgraded T-54/55 feature a Vietnamese-made Kontakt, Vietnamese-made multi-function scope,...
Kilo-class submarine capable of launching Klub-S missile. One thing worth noting is Klub-S VLS probably, just probably, is capable of taking Kh-35 "Zvezda" missile. Why worth noting ? Recently Viettel corporation just release a few footage of Vietnamese-made mobile ground launching system for Vietnamese-made Kh-35, named VCM-01. VCM-01 stand for "Vietnam Cruise Missile". Probably Vietnam already completed their project on developing a VCM-01 variant capable of launching from VLS in Kilo-class submarine
You forgot the Naval Infantry of the Navy. Naval Infantry is well-equipped like the Ground Infantry, but they have different mission, such as retake island. Naval Infatry isn't the same with Marines, worth noting
You forgot the Su-27 that the Air Force have
Vietnam did interest in the F-16, but never buy them for two reason: F-16 is a light fighter jet and in used condition while Su-30 is a factory new heavy multirole fighter jet so it nonsense when buying a bunch of used weapon when you can buy factory new and better weapon. Second, United States have rules that seriously affect the political system in Vietnam, especially is decommunization of Vietnam, and human right problem. It's not worth buy a light fighter jet in used condition but you have to change your political system and unreasonable accusation of human right problem in Vietnam as those who they want Vietnam government to release is a bunch of "enemy of the states"
You forgot about the anti-air force belong to the Air Force branch. Anti-air force is well-equipped with SAM, including S-300, SPYDER,... but the backbone is still upgraded S-125 "Pechora", along with them is anti-air cannon such as S-60 57mm, 61-K 37mm, Type 65 37mm twin-barrel. SAM system, along with anti-air cannon like so and low-attitude anti-air weapon like .50 Cal plus Air Force form a multi-layer anti-air system. Vietnam multi-layer anti-air system prove to be effective during Vietnam War. Beside, Vietnam Air Force are including Ground Infantry whose mission is to protect these anti-air weapon. In the time when small drone are used largely number, these outdated anti-air weapon is the best solution to deal with the drone. Vietnam already develope a syncing system for anti-air cannon, controlled by computer. Operator will aiming on the computer and all six cannon will point at the same target and will fire at the same time, significantly improve their capability

As a Vietnamese , let me summarize for you, some of you may be wrong . In now , Vietnam’s navy have 4 Gerpard 3.9 , 6 Kilo submarines, 14 corvette ships inculde 8 Molniya by Vietnam and Russian, 4 Tarantul , 1 BPS-500 made by Vietnam , 1 Khukri by India , 7 anti-submarines include 5 Petya II/III and 2 Pohang , these are strongest 31 ships of Vietnamese navy and also we have many another ship but it can only be used for coastal protection activities , in future Vietnam could make Anti-submarine ships named SN-1000 , corvette ships 500-600 tons with VCM-01 anti-ship missile and according to Colonel Duong Van Yen, Vietnam has enough technology to build a 5,000-ton warship on VTV 4 channel. About air force , Vietnamese have 90 combat aircrafts with 46 Su-27/30mk2 , 32 Su-22UM3K/M4 , 12 Yak-130 light combat aircrafts . In Vietnam, the Su-22 is used for both air defense missions. Although the Yak-130 was purchased for training, it was used more in combat than in training, we also have 3 C212 and 3 C295 and unknow number of An-02 transport plane , unknow Mi-8/17 and 99 helicopter are not correct , in future Vietnam people’s airforce could buy Su-30SM , Su-34 or Su-35 , for farther future could be Su-57 or Su-75 and Vietnam would never buy F-16 , we have our own reason . We - Vietnamese alway want peace and make friends with all nations in the world but it’s doesn’t mean we forget to protect our country so our army still modernize in 2030 and farther , we love peace but if there are any countries want to invade us , we would fight for country to the last people 🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳 ❤❤

So, realistically…(and I’m a big fan of Vietnam’s independence movement from the French following ww2,
Honestly, I wish things could have been different a long time ago in 1919 with the first petition to have Vietnam’s independence recognized)
So it’s very good to see Vietnam and the U.S. starting again to build a positive relationship between countries and peoples.
    With that all said,
    1. Yes, absolutely get weapons from the U.S. , we have the highest quality military technology.
    2. Long term, invest in producing weapons domestically while subsidizing technological development through defense spending.
This is actually the way to upgrade the quality of life & security of the whole of Vietnam, primarily because it always for the development of a technologically capable manufacturing base for the entire country (your military equipment should always be made by private companies since this increases the competition and drive for development + the private companies will look to sell other technological developed products as consumer goods on the market using their knowledge, thus you get real innovation that can compete on an export market even if it’s just quality consumer goods, it raises the income of the entire country through larger export revenue.

    @HigehiroGo Před 20 dny +19

First, the $14.2 billion the video mentioned is not correct. Vietnam's defense spending is only 6-7 billion USD.
Second, what Vietnam has done with the money it earns is much better than what other Southeast Asian countries are doing. At least in terms of weapons procurement and equipment autonomy. For example, with that amount of money, Vietnam bought submarines, 3 su-30 squadrons, dozens of t-90 tanks, frigates from 500-2500 tons as well as many other equipment such as radars, missile complexes. fire, coastal defense missile complex,...
Third, during the time the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, Vietnam promoted its defense autonomy because the countries selling goods to Vietnam were busy providing resources for the war. Many things Vietnam can independently produce part or most of the equipment including personal guns of all kinds, artillery shells of all kinds, anti-ship missiles or drones as well as many types of radar,... One thing that Many Southeast Asian countries often cannot do it on their own even with equivalent spending
Finally, what I say is not to brag but to let everyone understand what we have been doing in recent years and for Vietnamese people, this is not a big secret. Clearly, Vietnam's potential opponents over thousands of years of history are not countries with average potential, countries whose strength is only slightly greater than ours, but are mostly superpowers with is many times stronger, so Vietnam's military modernization compared to neighboring countries is an obvious thing to do.

In my opinion, Vietnam realistically has two enemies. One is China so they need a large fleet to protect its eez and also a large army and a good surface-to-air missile system in case of invasion like in 1979. The second enemy of Vietnam is the USA which now is seeking in desperation for alliances for a future war against China, the americans usually use the method of a carrot and a stick. In the case of Vietnam now is carrot time (investments, trade etc) but if this fails to make it a puppet against China prepare to see the stick in full force like color revolutions, terrorist attacks, ngo infiltration that promote "Western values", economic sanctions and other similar things. To protect from this, they need strong diversification of their trade, investments and good National intelligence services.

not all are like that, after all, there are also Vietnamese people who build wealth, have their own channel engineer and many inventions I have seen, they are really good at using second-hand items and making vehicles and tools

Vietnam like many militaries is inexperienced, it hasn't fought a war in 45 years. It doesn't have a Ho Chi Minh Trail like it did in 1960s, if Hanoi we're leveled to the ground like what's happening in Ukraine, they would face a massive occupation and refugee problem that they couldn't cope with the people value money after the previous generations survived war.

There is no doubt that the Vietnamese army is a powerful army. The Vietnamese even have a dream to regain the Guangxi and Guangdong areas of China that they believed belonged to Vietnam in ancient times. This is unrealistic.

As strong as Russia before the invasion of Ukraine 😂. Those who fight the US and briefly, China are long gone. And base on how my brother get into the Navy with million of kickback, i won't bet my money on VN military. The only way forward is switching to Western military equipment and structure.

The key is that weapons must be suitable for the combat environment as well as the proficiency of the user. It’s not just about going online and believing Western advertisements that claim their weapons are superior and that Russian weapons are inferior. A specific example is in Ukraine, where many Western vehicles have sunk into marshes due to their excessive weight, resulting in damage and wastage. Not to mention the maintenance and repairs required after combat. Additionally, when it comes to cost, Western weapons are often at least 1.5 times more expensive than Russian weapons, yet the practical effectiveness is comparable or even inferior. Regarding arms trade, whether Vietnam can purchase Western weapons largely depends on whether the contracts are accepted by the United States. Vietnam’s decision to acquire the Gepard-class shipbuilding technology from Russia was influenced by previous pressure from the U.S. when negotiating the purchase of the Sigma-class shipbuilding technology from the Netherlands. Or you can read about the Rafale aircraft deal with France

The Vietnamese government is friendly if not under the influence of China. They do not want to lose their kleptocracy and rather lean towards China and Russia because both essentially are kleptocracy. The Vietnamese populace is anti-China and most want a closer relationship with the West. The military leadership is loyal to the government, but the troops are recruited from the populace. When things go down who will the military fight for? In recent years the Vietnamese Coast Guard have shown that they aren’t going to sit by and look like cuckold while their belligerent neighbor bullies their people. Maybe when conflicts break out the military will do its duty and protect the country and the populace. Maybe then a new type of government will emerge to replace the kleptocracy.

Vietnam has a hypocritical government, the West has double standards. 😁
Vietnamese people always respect history. We are grateful to the Soviet Union, Cuba and China (if they had not attacked us in 1979).
In addition, Sweden and Iraq also helped our country at difficult times.
Even if Saddam Hussein is convicted, he will always be respected by the Vietnamese people. Iraq aided and lent hundreds of millions of dollars to Vietnam when we were in the most difficult situation.
Vietnam is not rich but is a trustworthy country, loyal to friend countries, not selling friendship for personal gain.
