    Vietnamese navy is one of the oldest in the world, not young. Professional navy ships and battle have been well recorded in Vietnam's history, as early as from Tran dynasty (1226-1400). The battle in 1390 in Thang Long, in which Dai Viet navy used cannon to kill Champa king Che Bong Nga, was perhaps the earliest recorded use of cannon in navy welfare in the world.
    Tran dynasty was also famous to use navy ships to attack and expel the Mongols. In fact, most important battle happened on rivers or sea.
    Le, Nguyen dynasties also had relatively good navy forces, with well-recorded number of battle ships, number of cannons on each ships and organizations.

      Reliance may not be the right word to describe. It is not a "problem" when trades go on as usual, while a nation practices good diplomacy and stand guard. China has a large trade surplus with Vietnam due to the huge offshoring of foreign manufacturing, economy of scale and large over-capacities. Trade is more in China's favor here. Many exported products make it difficult for local companies to compete. What China export can be sourced from other countries together with local productions, with some initial pain in adjustment of course. Trade is mutually beneficial and Vietnam does have sizable export to China. The U.S. by far is the most important export market for Vietnam (huge trade surplus) and nearly impossible to replace. It is Vietnam's most important trading partner. Manufacturing is also shifting away from China for lower costs and more friendly business environments elsewhere. Remember, China was not a factor in the world economy before the 90s and the world were doing fine without China. Do not underestimate any nation's resolve to adjust and finding economic solutions. China over-played its hands using economic coercion on Australia and Australia adjusted within a short time and China suffered. China very likely knew it will hurt itself more if it tries to weaponize trade (which it does not) with Vietnam along with losing an important partner in the region politically to the U.S. China is now growing weaker economically (and accelerating) along with its diminishing international clout.

      If you understand history then you know that the U.S. had rebuild both Japan and Korea's economy from scratch after the WW2 and the Korean war. America made sure that both countries did not fail in order to stop the spread of communism. Vietnam on the other had had no such advantage and the US had only removed their trade embargo in 1994. Nothing news that comes out of China cannot be trusted as there is no way to verified it's accuracy so must be taken with a grain of salt.@@Teochewtuahang

    • @ex0duzz
      @ex0duzz Před 4 měsíci +8

      Sure, everyone has a dream or goal, but the reality is different. They will never be able to challenge China militarily or win a real war if China is serious. This is on land, let alone in the the or air, like in SCS. Vietnam was smart to make concessions and stop fighting China over useless islands in SCS. Vietnam learned their lesson after the 1988 Johnson South reef "skirmish" where Vietnam Navy was just slaughtered with no chance to fight back(70 viet Navy died, 3 warship sunk while China lost nothing).
      Vietnam can't do any regional stuff or power projection, it can only defend itself. It will need Chinese help and support if it wants to advance in terms of air or naval power since west will never sell or help Vietnam in advanced tech. Even old tech or weapons, they will not be able to sell since Vietnam is communist country.
      Maybe one day it Vietnam teams up with China and keeps trading with China and China helps Vietnam develop, one day it can be useful to keep regional peace in the same way that usa uses Japan or SK in the region. But just like without usa, they can never challenge Chinas power and usa can destroy their economy anytime. China is the same. Vietnam is reliant on China and can never challenge or go against China. But even worse, since China is forever Vietnam's neighbour. If Japan or SK wanted they could side with China and kick usa out. But China cannot be kicked out since China will always be there and be the "middle country" that has 20% of humanity just by itself.

The number of Vietnam coast guard ships is now more than the total number of ships in all other Asean countries. In addition, Vietnam is one of the countries that can produce its own missiles, we can produce as many as we want. What is published by the government or military sites is often information 10~15 years out of date compared to reality.

    - Second: although the economy for the military is not as much as that of developed countries, Vietnam still has more than enough basic weapons to arm the army in a short period of time without needing them. foreign support.

    My friend, a colonel in Vietnam People Air Force, once asked me about how much submarines do I think they have. I answered 6, he says at least 12. This is really surprising, as the fact about Vietnam having 6 Kilo class submarine is well known, but I don't know about the rest. Then he says that they also acquire submarine and semi-submarine from North Korea in 1996. You can see the information at least in Vietnamese Wikipedia of "Vietnam Submarine force", because the English page doesn't have much information. Although I can't make sure those type and number are right.
    (I just take a look at Vietnamese page of Vietnam People's Navy. Interestingly, there is a Submarine Brigade 189th and also a Submarine Regiment 196th, which is noted 2/8/1996. Search that Regiment name, you can see some articles, something like "Untold stories about Vietnam's First Submarine Regiment")
    Another thing that can be found on Wikipedia is the VCM-01, abbreviate for Vietnam Cruise Missile. From what is wrote, it's likely a Kh-35 anti-ship missile that Vietnamese can produce.

    Actually, Vietnam has paid attention to Western weapons to diversify its arsenal, but the strange thing is that the contracts are always canceled for unknown reasons, causing Vietnam to suffer great losses, so they are cautious in the future. More often than not, we only buy 1 or 2 weapons that represent a comprehensive strategic partnership like the US.

      Even though Vietnam project itself as a non-aligned country, but the west or the democratic alliance knew that Vietnam is the lowkey ally of Soviet union/Russia or communist china, that's why you can't really buy modern weapon to the U.S or E.U countries. Unless you change your policy or make an agreement to them.

      @ex0duzz Před 4 měsíci

      What advanced or strategic weapons has Vietnam bought from USA? Afaik, nothing. Usa will never help Communist Vietnam get stronger or give them advanced weapons or technology which can change the balance of power in Asia or the world. They won't even do it to Taiwan or Japan or sk. Only Australia they sold nuclear subs but Australia will be reliant on USA as a result and USA can turn it off or make them useless anytime, just like with F35.

      If you really believe usa is Vietnam's "comprehensive strategic partner" then I have to laugh at your naivety. They only using Vietnam to be fodder vs China but Vietnam knows that China is not a real enemy. Small territory disputes over some reef or island is nothing. China is the real comprehensive strategic partner of Vietnam and crucial form vietnams development, security and long term prosperity. Without China Vietnam would not even exist and would probably be attacked even today. Even worse if Vietnam makes enemy of China and USA and China both are against Vietnam.

    • @chien.nguyen.
      @chien.nguyen. Před 3 měsíci

      @@ex0duzz Not really, the relationship between Vietnam and China is economic dependence on each other. Vietnam is a country that imports a lot of raw materials from China, but conversely, China also depends on a large amount of Vietnamese goods. , especially consumer goods and agricultural products, if Vietnam stops exporting agricultural products for a period of time, China will face extremely dangerous food security problems and Vietnam will also be affected economically in terms of agricultural products. and Vietnam often uses this to balance China's influence. The relationship between Vietnam and China is one of mutual exploitation, not complete cooperation. A history of more than 2,000 years of continuous invasion by China makes Vietnam has very high vigilance, most Vietnamese people even have more hostile ideas towards Chinese people than Americans. Establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership with the US is just a move to attract benefits from the US-China trade war and ensure that China will not make the East Sea situation more serious. What you said was that without China, Vietnam would have lost to the US during the previous war because at this time the Soviet Union ordered China to help Vietnam with food aid and weapons, and the Soviet Union also provided weapons aid to Vietnam. through China, but relations after Vietnam's independence with China were not good and so were China's relations with the Soviet Union, which led to the border war between Vietnam and China in the past,Maybe Vietnam was lucky at that time because the Soviet Union stood up to protect Vietnam when they warned China to withdraw its troops while sending main troops to the entire border next to the Soviet Union and China to put pressure and reason to The US actually did not go to war with Vietnam again and neither did China due to information about a secret treaty between Vietnam and the Soviet Union and later it was possible that Russia would inherit some responsibility to protect Vietnam. if China or America causes war. As you can see, when the Soviet Union still existed, the center of gravity changed from China to Vietnam, so that could be true, but the Soviet Union collapsed too quickly because of internal problems and was slow to reform its institutions, if they If we can survive for a few more years, after seeing the results of Vietnam's reforms and following suit, the Soviet Union will still stand strong.

Vietnam's military is plagued with corruption, nepotism, poor leadership, outdated training methods, and a lot of other problems. Just because you have powerful weapons and large number of troops doesn't mean you have a powerful military. Look at Russia. Almost everyone said Russia would defeat Ukraine within weeks, or even days, and now you see what's going on,. Russia has a mighty military, but the corruption and poor leadership are the reasons why it cannot defeat Ukraine.
