Discontinuing cheap cars is just like eliminating affordable housing for much more expensive ones, not everyone can afford suvs, trucks, cuvs, and large sedans
Almost like it's on purpose to further the social class divide huh
Today's newspaper states our new local low income / elderly housing folks are freezing cold using electric heaters and soon to be moved into hotels. I
The problem is that people just don’t buy them anymore.
Nobody can afford NEW SUVs, trucks, CUVs, etc... but go to any apartment in the ghetto and you will find all those things as the third or fourth owners where they buy it for pennies on the dollar. Just because you can't afford a 2024 Toyota Camry doesn't mean you can't afford a 2014.
@@BoopSnoot"Just buy a old used car BRO"
I love cheap cars! I hate all this crappy tech in cars today. Keep it simple. I don't care if it's boring. That faux carbon fiber plastic is cheesy though. I also wish that Nissan would offer a sunroof in the Versa. For an urban car in a place like NYC, the Versa would be nearly perfect.
Amen
you want things simple but you want one of the most useless items in a car ever. A sunroof
@@kevinbarry71 A sunroof is a luxury and many people don't want one. That's why sunroofs are an option. I've owned several cars but my favorite was my 1976 bumble bee yellow VW Beetle with a sunroof. The sunroof was constantly used. I loved it so much. Letting in sun and wind in the cabin. In comparison, the cars I owned that didn't have a sunroof felt claustrophobic inside.
With that car you need it all the ventilation and airflow you could generate. All the cars I have owned have had properly functioning HVAC systems. I don't find myself looking up while in the car. Sunroofs generate noise at speed, reduce headroom, and pretty much promise you will have a leak at some point. No thank you
You don't want a sunroof in New York City the pigeons would be shiting all over the seats
My brother bought a Nissan Versa SR in 2022. It's got just about every option and is even comfortable for a long car trip. We have driven from Utah to Oregon 3 times now and it consistantly gets 35 mpg at 80mph. It's a bit noisy on rough roads but has a good suspension and steering. We fill it with an ice chest and suitcases for two and have room left. It is so worth it considering what he paid.
Imagine in an alternate timeline where we would've gotten a Nismo Versa Hatchback with a 1.5T
That would be sick actually
Nissan should've kept the Versa as a hatchback imo these small cars usually look pretty ridiculous as short stumpy sedans. However, short cars look fine as hatchbacks
Chevy Trax, its very roomy, frugal, and you can get a loaded one for $25K.
According to Nissan fiscal year report, I'm quite sure that the Versa is here to stay alongside Sentra and Altima as regular sedan. Anyway, the Japanese version of Versa, which is the Note and Aura, is Nissan cash cow in the home market
@@BoopSnoot Without the reliability of Nissan.
@@BoopSnoot While a better/newer chassis design it's still a 3 cylinder turbo Daewoo. Longevity remains to be seen
Fair, but honestly I'd take something made in Korea over something made in Mexico these days. Smart to wait a year or two though to work out bugs and verify its track record. @@zk9964
Too bad this segment is now down to this and the Soul and Mirage. I just came back from Japan and its sad to see they still get the Honda Fit, Nissan Note Aura, and Toyota Yaris. I saw those everywhere when I was in Japan, miss those cars. They are so much better to look at than all those soccer mom SUVs. We need more affordable back to basics cars like these, not every needs a high monthly payment SUV that screams look at what I drive.
And the Versa will be gone by 2025 in the US. Mirage as well. The US consumer just does not want subcompacts. Mexico buys more Versas than the US with a third of the US population.
Kirk, the Versa hatchback is the Note in Japan and they still sell it. In fact, the Note got a full redesign and it looks so good. They got a premium version of the Note called the Aura, and a Nismo version too. The Versa, or Note, is a big deal in Japan.
Yea, it’s a huge glow up compared to the outgoing one we got, really wish we got the note/aura here
@@ameraboukoura6091You should see the interior of the latest Note. It’s superb compared to the Versa. In my opinion, the Versa exterior is good, but interior needs an update. Versa needs a Nismo too.
The Note (Versa hatchback) and the Serena (compact minivan) are Nissan backbone in home market alongside trio Japan only Kei car
@@awang_irYes. And they come in e-Power too.
I have a 2015 Versa Note (USA) and I'm keeping it unless it resurfaces in a year or two. By the way, the "S" trim which offers manual transmission will not include rear seat backs that fold. That's a problem for me. Another reason to hang onto my Versa Note
A squared off rear end to make it a wagon >>>
Kirk, very nice review. You've helped me to get obtain my last car a year ago with all your information. I've had 2 Sentras that were great for me. Now have Honda HRV (old gen) that I love. But I still need to learn all the stuff on it. I'm afraid to try paddle shifters, and never tried sport mode yet. It feels like I'm in low gear. Ha. Keep up the great info. Thanks, Bill
I like the Versa. I like how there’s even soft touch material for a cheap car like the Versa. I hope Nissan keeps it. Nissan is between a rock and a hard place, so who knows.
Toyota should have kept the Yaris in the USA & put some effort into making it a nicer subcompact for this market. The SE was the only nice trim level. I loved my 2015 Yaris SE hatch 5-MT (w/added TRD rear sway bar). Likewise, Mazda should have kept their Mazda2 available in the US & focused on making it as nice/sporty as it is in other global markets, instead of a basic cut-rate economy car & one they passed off to Toyota to sell as a rebadged (& ugly-modified) Yaris sedan/hatch for a few years, after Toyota discontinued the real Yaris hatch with model year 2018.
Amen
extraordinary brother, good luck always
The Versa would still sell big, but Nissan has not delivered enough units to the dealers. They sell as fast as they come in. Terrific car!
They make more profit on the other models so they don't actually want to sell you a Versa they want to use it to lure you in and then upsell you.
The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is looking into reports of power loss in Nissan Versa vehicles with manual transmissions. Owners have reported instances where their cars stall and go into limp mode, resulting in limited torque and an inability to maintain speed or accelerate above 30mph. These incidents have occurred both on highways and in city traffic.
Owner complaints suggest that the power loss occurs when the clutch is released too quickly or for other reasons. Once the car goes into limp mode, a restart is required to reset the computer and restore normal function.
WHICH MODELS ARE AFFECTED?
The investigation covers Nissan Versa vehicles from the model years 2022 to 2024. Specifically, it focuses on those with manual transmissions. Versa models with automatic transmissions are omitted.
I'll be getting on in 4 months can't wait
Ditch the CVT and it’s perfect at the price point.
Oh and bring back the hatch version.
No I would not recommend this car due to CVT issues my friends has 34,000km and she’s got to get a new motor unfortunately
@@Brian_Eugene_Leeyeah it’s crazy people recommending this car my moms kicks which is the same platform and the sensor went which caused the motor to loose power and it was a 1,600 fix and it’s a 2019
All Nissan has to do is ditch JATCO CVTs across their entire lineup. Hopefully the next Murano (which there are spyshots of) doesn’t have a CVT.
@@Brian_Eugene_Leeall cvt is junk. Not just nissan.
@@faheemabbas3965They never will sadly, atleast not anytime soon. They've spent too much money on 10+ years of R&D since they pretty much own JATCO. They would have to throw away their own company, buy rights to use a different manufacturer's transmission, and all that on cars that are already selling pretty decent. Their shareholders would never let them willingly kill their stock like that
They do have a manual transmission too.
Dead company walking ... and I owned a 1973 240 Z . Loved it.
But it just isn't the same company at all. Too bad. it happens.
Not with my dollar I wouldn't.
But that is me.
Great review Kirk! As you wisely said, America needs more cheap cars!
We scored a Manual in Electric Blue! It's a nice little build. It's nice to row through the gears, 5th gear makes great use of the 4k rpm max torque power figures
All the controls look simple and logical. I’ve been in vehicles where it’s next to impossible to figure out how to use the heat and air conditioning. In some ways, because of the simple outlay, this may be easier to drive than many expensive vehicles that can be overly complicated. It looks like a great bargain.
Nissan did 0 marketing for this. That's why it doesn't sell.
I love this car. It’s actually slightly bigger than my old 1986 Honda Accord.
When we lost the Fit, we lost the ultimate "starter car". Yes, we need more small, fuel efficient, affordable cars like this.
See several Fit's daily- cannot figure out why Honda stopped selling it in the US.
@@67tomcatbecause dealers could not justify marking them up
@@67tomcatI remember them having stupid infotainment controls. You had to turn the ac up with a touch screen, which if your hands were sweaty, dirty, or wet didn’t work.
Slava Russia 🇷🇺
5:58 Don’t do the Nissan Energy lol 😆🤣
Thanks Kirk! Too bad the Yari went away.
Kirk, Where is the justice when the Venza is discontinued but the Versa lives on? 🤔
Great looking subcompact car! Keep driving those.
I really love my Micra (in Canada) annoyed that they have stopped selling here. Not sure if they still sell elsewhere in the world. Would like the Versa more here if they had the hatch and manual transmission. Oddly in Canada the Versa only comes with the CVT but we get the manual Sentra. Which I also like, but I'm so use to the compact size and maneuverability with the Micra. I just have my fears with any CVT issues. Great videos as always 👍🏼
Yeah I think the Versa S with manual transmission is the only one that makes sense. Otherwise, you might as well get the base model Sentra S for $22k. I can't believe they even make a Versa SR. Who's buying that?
Would also like to see the Versa hatch. Back.
you have to go in and set the Bass, treble etc.. it actually puts out some decent bass for a 6 spkr system. but could always use a aftermarket Subwoofer. ive had a 23 SR in black for just over a year now, love the thing! ☮
The Versa started out as a very comfortable, surprisingly spacious hatchback in the first generation. They subsequently turned it into a very average econobox.
Awesome
You think I could have a powered subwoofer installed in the SR to pump up the bass? Is it possible? I like your review of this vehicle. Nice and to the point. And one thing more: I know I'm dreaming but Nissan should offer a sunroof option with the SR. Oh well...Peace...🙏♐
Compared to econoboxes from a couple decade ago, this car is practically a luxury vehicle. Very impressive!
I wouldn't trust a Nissan CVT, but with the 5 speed, this is an incredible buy!
I really hate that companies get greedy and just want to sell very expensive stuff. I hope they all go bankrupt due to that! I would love to buy a $20k new car. But I'm not paying a single penny over $20k for anything. My last new car was a 2005 Hyundai Elantra for $12k. I've bought good used reliable vehicles for that same price or less recently. I just can't justify burning my money away in a depreciating asset like a $30k plus new "cheap car", which is the normal in 2024. Thanks for the video. Subscribed. Hopefully the Versa doesn't dissappear soon 😢
I have a 2015 Versa Note (USA) and I'm keeping it unless it resurfaces in a year or two. By the way, the "S" trim which offers manual transmission will not include rear seat backs that fold. That's a problem for me. Another reason to hang onto my Versa Note.
Very good nissan.
4:36 I guess they don't make the hatch for the US anymore, but it is still available in other markets, but badged as the Nissan Note. It has Nissan's e-power drivetrain as well, so get the best of both worlds by having electric drive but with a engine generator... nothing to plug in, and "recharging" is simply refilling the gas tank.
Get the switch the 5 speed manual and slap a spoiler on and the sr rims and you got the sr without the heated seats
Good little cars.
Consumer Reports lists the Versa as having serious reliability issues. The cheapest car to own isn't always the cheapest car to buy. A 2-year old Toyota Camry that has already experienced its greatest depreciation and will be reliable for a decade more can be cheaper than a new Versa.
That is only due to its cvt transmission , you get a manual transmission and it will be extremely reliable
Good luck, according to the inventory search, there are only 138 manual transmission 24 Versas on order, delivery, or delivered in the entire continental US. By contrast there are 4,498 automatics available. So the chance that your local dealership has a stick is VERY low. @@Tragick_Sin
LOL, for example search the state of TX, there is only one manual Versa, in black, and its special order so already reserved. For all practical purposes, the manual doesn't exist, and resale will be difficult as genZ don't know how to drive stick and those that do want a sports car. @@Tragick_Sin
This reminds me of the little ford fiesta except it had the dual clutch automatic it was quick of the line especially the 1 st 20,000 miles I beat a dodge challenger R/t off the line had it beat by two car links
Why people aren't buying cheap cars is people like big cars usually.
Why many brands have dropped small cars. Not selling well.
Its cool Nissan making this car in a manual transmission yet. And the price is a excellent deal. I would definitely be in the market for one someday. Perfer to buy one thats 10 years old to avoid a bunch of taxes.
Think it is very important for there to be inexpensive cars in the US. Also, we need more quality small cars by Acura, Lexus, etc.

I'd rather have a 10 year old Camry with 100k on it than a new Versa.
It's the sane thing as saying ud rather have my brothers 2014 altima with 300k miles on it than this versa. It eureka fine and much better to drive because it's a bigger car. Of course...
This is the biggest problem with dirt cheap new cars. Even the Yaris from Toyota couldn’t be saved in the US…
I put a lot more miles than 10k per year.
If they keep the Versa and redesign it, it’ll have a similar interior and engine as the newly redesigned Kicks but without the Bose system, AWD, and only offer a regular sunroof (new Kicks has panoroof).
Bravo to Nissan for having this available with 5spd manual! Honda needs to bring back Honda Fit with manual transmission!
I have a 2023, and overall it is a terrific car for the price. Ignore Consumer Reports - I do not find their bad review to reflect my experience at all.
The Versa is literally the only new car I can afford. Kept it under $20,000. I am just amazed how much people are willing to over extend themselves buying cars. Cars keep you poor!
Toyota Corolla starts at 22K. Stretch for that.
It's a cvt only. You can get this nissan in a manual for 17. Something to consider.
@@LoveFineArts the Corolla used to have a manual. And the Toyota CVT actually lasts. It's the Nissans that don't despite what he said
@@kevinbarry71 I have a newish corolla. I hope the cvt lasts but am suspicious. I dont like cvt's at all.
Eventually, I think all subcompact cars will just discontinue all together in the United States. People just don’t buy these, they would rather buy the base corolla or base civic. However, I am not sure about the Venue, it does seems like a subcompact car, it probably sells better than versa since it’s “SUV”, and people in the United States love SUVs for practicality.
You aren't saving any money with it because that Jatco CVT will blow up in any Nissan. Thats probably why the 5 speed manual is suggested. Before the Sentra, for a bit more get the Corolla!
I would consider the manual.
Does the backseat go down?
On the SR and SV trims, yes they do.
As for the base S model, it does not.
Too bad they don't put a manual in the SR.
You can’t find that cat for 16,000, the cheapest you can find it for it over $18,500. The price is a joke
If the Versa had a better CVT, I'd buy one. I really, really like small cars. The Sentra is too big for my tastes.
5:58 no don’t do the Big Versa Energy lol
CVT = No $ale for me.
The Sentra is a beautiful car but it has a direct injection engine and The Versa does not!
Tesla service cars should be diesel trucks with diesel generators on the back.
This car is the most sold car in mexico.
These are unreliable trash. Transmissions may last a few years. Some mechanics won't even do the work to avoid customer warranty issues.
Under Ghosn everything was just put out cheap and with even more discounts...
Kirk, Too Bad that Nissan's Jatco Transmissions Are the Worst in the Automotive industry 😕😮😠😡!!
Has Nissan ever fixed their CVT garbage transmission ???
This car as driven is crap with that CVT. Get the hard to get manual. Maintain the fluids well and the manual tranny car will get you two to 300,000 miles for 20k delivered.
I think my vacuum cleaner has more power. Nissan needs to offer an optional engine.
and a transmission that works, that's not flawed from the get go !
@@boci11 So sad that Nissan cannot get out of its own way these days.
Yep I don’t know why they got rid of the ford fiesta s and the ford fiesta st s they were like a go fart on handling and had almost 200 hp and got 32 to 38 hwy and they got rid for big ol’ trucks they suck gas 17 to 21 hwy the car company s are f n up
Do people think they’re too good to drive a shitbox these days? This is the only car in the segment and there is a free trade agreement with Mexico so I figure the manufacturer can churn these out to reach a profitable scale but it seems not.
This car will impress even Kim Kardashian because it has a tanning bed in the office, which is underneath the rear axle.
But you loose your money very weak car transmission is not good
Dont they make a small hatchback thats cheaper?
I see these at 17500 and i might buy on in manual to drive to work.the 5 speed is a little quicker
