    Thumbs up for the genuine side cover gasket. It looks so much better than the green ones, and you know it will fit and work as designed.

      Yep. Can't go wrong with that one. Thanks Ian.

    Thanks Ken! I think you summed up this passion with your last sentence...because it is shinny! I, too, put so many parts on and off that to a "regular" person they might think it is odd, but then again restoring bikes with carbs is more an illness than an oddity. :) Thank you again for your videos! They helped me with a clutch job!

      Thanks and I'm glad the videos are helpful. You mention carbs. I'm having some "challenges" with the stock bridged carbs. Videos coming.

    Great job, so far Ken. That bike is the exact same as the one I am going to rebuild when I get the chance. I finally got my oil pump rebuilt for my 87, but not without almost pulling my hair out. I replaced the seals, and on first start, it was pumping fine, but the oil only moved about two inches, and it quit. After removing and putting it back on half a dozen times, along with removing the spigots just in case, I took a close look at the small seal the piston goes through, and saw that the metal in the seal, ( looking from the top,) wasn't concentric with the bore of the seal. I put the original one back in, and it worked perfect. I figure the new seal was causing the piston to thrust to one side, loosing vacuum.

      Thanks John. Well that's a hellish oil pump story. Did the seal get smashed and misshapen? Glad you got it sorted. It would have been a disaster had you went for a ride thinking it was functioning properly.

      @@KensGarage1 It was a defective seal. The metal portion was off center to the hole, forcing the piston over to one side, causing a leak in vacuum. Lucky I managed to take the old one out without damaging it. I'm going to contact the seller and see about getting a replacement.

    I'm rebuilding a red and white bike too..I wasn't happy with the plastic side covers. I bought a kit from Wicked Motorsports that has Aluminum covers on sprocket side and Aluminum waterpump and round Yamaha cover for clutch side. Did like you and powder coated clutch side cover..it's not original but wasn't going for all original. I just didn't like how the plastic covers scratch 😕
    Your doing a very nice resto..

      Thanks Stephen. Wicked has some cool stuff. I wish he would put up a normal ecommerce web site. My next custom build (coming up after this one) will use his or Norbos side covers. My clutch side cover (and a bunch of other parts) was painted with oil based Rustoleum thinned with acetone shot through my Fuji Q5.

    Nice job polishing the stator cover. What did you use? CR-8065 is the only stuff I know of that will buff out like that. Good stuff, but $$$. If you have an alternative, I am all ears.
    BTW, the ribs were really good! 😊

      Hungry again. Yeah, I should have videoed the polishing of the stator cover. The videoing and editing can be a bit overwhelming some times so it gets bypassed. I cleaned it real good. Thought I ruined it because at one point I tried denatured alcohol and it turned hazy white. Don't do that. Ended up digging through my polishing bin and had a very soft maybe 3 inch arbored wheel for a drill motor. I just put auto wax on it and kept at it for a bit. I was amazed it came out this good.

    Oh, I used sealant when I put my clutch cover on, will you?

    • @KensGarage1
      @KensGarage1  Před rokem

      Not with a brand new Yamaha gasket. They put sealant in critical areas. Reusing a gasket (some claim to be successful reusing these) or aftermarket I would apply 1211.
