    This song was inspired by a book called 'Rebecca'. When Taylor discovered the book, she wrote this song from the perspective of Rebecca.

    I'm so glad that you caught the pain & vulnerability in this song (in fact, the 5th song on every Taylor album is the most heartbreaking one). There's speculation that it's about Princess Diana & Charles or perhaps some literary characters Taylor read about during quarantine. She could have also pulled from past relationships but she has been in a very healthy relationship with a guy a year younger then her for about 6 years now so it's not about her this time!

      Taylor has said that the song is based on the 1938 Novel Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. The themes are very similar.

      This song is a wonderful depiction of what it might have felt like if Rebecca were a real person. (Taylor said she was inspired to write this song while reading the book Rebecca)

    My marriage is pretty rough atm. My daughter heard this song and asked me what it was about and I told her the wife adores the husband but he just tolerates her and she said "is that what Daddy's doing?" I hope not!

    I consider Coney Island (feat. The National) as the male perspective of this song. In it, the narrator laments not giving more of themselves to the person they are/were with. You should react to it.

  • @bobbyrw1398
    @bobbyrw1398 Před 2 lety +12

    Yeah, she makes me dumb-struck sometimes too. An uncanny skill to place you in the middle of her story, making you feel emotional for no apparent reason. I've never personally experienced the narrative of this song, but feel an emotional tie to the characters anyway. Pretty amazing lyricism that can do that.

  • @stillfangirlingtoday1468
    @stillfangirlingtoday1468 Před 2 lety +11

    I think it's a pretty common concept in many relationships, at some point one of them could just be staying for the comfort of routine, so while the narrator loves this person very much still, the partner seems to just be going with the motions, not celebrating her love, leaving her alone in the marriage, but never actually leaving, which I think it's worse.

    This one is so painful. And the way she tells the story, makes you feel everything. She really is a storyteller: you around 7:05 mark to the narrator: “and you what? What???”
    More Taylor, please.

    Taylor did write this song inspired by a book, i haven't read the book but I interpret this song as the woman feeling unappreciated by her partner, and the song sums up what she's thinking. She never voices out her thoughts, thus why the song ended circling back to "I sit and watch you". I think many people have this thought while in a relationship but decided not to act on those emotions.

    I didn’t read through all the comments, but Taylor wrote this after reading the novel Rebecca by the author Daphne du Maurier.
    Also, one aspect of the song that wasn’t mentioned is that there seems to be a power or a class difference in the relationship. I haven’t read the novel but he’s obviously older than his partner. The book is from the 1930s so while she toys with leaving it is even harder for her to do than it would be today.

    I’d be curious to have you listen through a song without stopping. Her music is so beautiful and a full story. Stopping to be literal doesn’t work 😆
    “overthinking” & “perceived pain” is literally where women live. Sorry dude… 😆 Also, telling a woman that her feelings are all in her head and just her perception is super misogynistic… I don’t think you mean it that way so I’m gonna give you a pass but some of what you said sounds super gaslighty 🤦🏻‍♀️

      that's not where i was going, but i see what you're saying. I frequently overthink things terribly, and they're almost never true. i did it just last night when i didn't get a text answer. this morning everything in my head that kept me awake all night was proven wrong. possibly my phrasing could have been better, but my perception was "sounds just like me"
