    Regarding why the dali didn't move. The AP just had a brief interview with the lead person from the army corps of engineers. He answered a question by saying they had recently pumped 10,000 tons of ballast into the bow of the Dali specifically to keep it from floating. The demolition crew setting off the charges was on board the DALI with the crew, which was ready to control the vessel in the event that it had refloated.

      The most of the weight, bridge concrete deck and traffic barriers, are still on the ship. The pieces which flew off were light steel members.

      @@larryt4884 That steel may look light but trust me it's heavy. Looks small on the screen but is is large and far from light. I know you may have meant compared to cement and all. Those post are 5 to 6 feet by 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" thick squared

      @@brinkee7674 I know for the fact that concrete barriers seen there are 2'-10" high. The chords and posts of the truss do not look much bigger, given that they are on the forefront and the barriers are further away from the camera.

      Thanks for the info on the ballasting. I wondered why bow did not begin to rise after the bridge railing were blasted and released from the forward deck area.

    Thank you for this video. I think you're correct that the bow didn't shift. If you line up the top of the big solar panel next to the pylon with the hull of the ship
    there doesn't
    seem like any
    change in the
    ship's attitude.
    Between all that junk to be cleared and suck of the muck where the ship is stuck I guess that's to be expected.

    Those shaped charge cutting explosives certainly did the job, with almost surgical precision. They cut through thick steel like a hot knife through butter. A major step forward toward moving the Dali and the full reopening of the port. Are they planing to remove the road deck before they try to move the Dali, it must still be a huge weight across that bow section.

    A great view of the explosion from the opposite side can be seen on the Reuters youtube.
    The other views are from upwind of the Dali. So the smoke blows away from camera.
    This view the smoke appears to blow towards the camera or at least that general direction.

    its pretty staggering to think all that weight didn't cut the front of the Dali off altogether - i guess the containers acted much like a cushion absorbing the impact, but then you have to also consider the large chunk of concrete laid across the bow
    even with all that weight, i doubt the Dali will rise that much if at all, she is resting nose down in the mud i understand, and with that mass of concrete on board, i reckon she will stay nose down until she can be moved
    i kept my curser registered on the Dali during the demo, she didn't even flinch, still a mass of weight to shift, but now i wonder if they will need to remove the concrete remains of the pier, she could be unstable with that chunk still onboard
    great coverage Captain Andy

  • @kenring9181
    @kenring9181 Před měsícem +2

    I just heard that the reason the steel is still standing on the deck is because there are broken containers at the base with flammable material in them. That is probably why I saw an arial shot shortly after the boom with firemen on the deck.

    re: "Did the Dali rise up?"
    IMHO, slightly.
    Before the demolition, the upper right-hand corner of the solar panel shows no blue hull above it; it is exactly in line with the gunnel upper edge.
    After the charges, there is a slim line of dark blue hull visible above that corner of the solar panel array.
    At this distance, is that about 1 or 2 feet of rise?

    • @RIPPERTON
      @RIPPERTON Před měsícem +1

      It DOES rise slightly. Rmbr half a millimetre on your screen is a meter on the Dali.
      I used the skyline of the containers against a black dot on the pole/mast in front of the ship.
      Its darker down at the solar panel and the edge of the gunnel is a bit blurry.
      The Dali is still sucked under by the mud, it will unstick itself in an hour or two.

    • @mlt6322
      @mlt6322 Před měsícem +1

      If you wind the video back to just before the blast and look at the small crane arm just left of the solar panels you see debris hanging off the ship and after the smoke clears that debris is about 6 ft higher above the crane arm.

    All they have to do now is get the remaining steel work off thd bow and that piece of 4 lane highway off.
    It's certainly not sea worthy, the bow is almost severed off. Its going to be a while before they sail.

    The new design of the bridge should have floating material put on it so the bridge doesn't sink if this ever happens again. Or the pillars of the bridge should have protection out far enough away to keep ships from hitting the pillars.
