As brilliant as this exposition by Dr. Mike Ezakome SAN is, he left a very important and fundamental question out. He successfully stated that the union called Nigeria was put together by Lugard without engaging the indigenous nationalities in the decision. He stated it was a contract that was to last for 100 years, and it expired in 2014. He reiterated the place of ethnic nationalities before the amalgamation, the need to renegotiate the union, and finally, the importance of yielding sovereignty to the people in the new constitutional- making process for Nigeria through a referendum. What he failed to address is the question of whether the indigenous nationalities want to return to their original independent status or they would choose to continue with the union that was formed for them by Lugard. Before we can vote on whether we want a presidential or parliamentary system, we need to first agree that we want to continue to be one country. Otherwise, the whole arrangement would remain manipulative. Therefore, the first referendum should ask if we still want to be lumped together. It's if the majority from each ethnic nationality says YES that we can then go into what system of government would we want to run together. Any nation or group that vote NO should be respected and allowed to exit the union called Nigeria.

While this sounds brilliant in theory it would not be so necessary as the national conference of 2014 was agreed to be a true representative of the people and of the 600 recommendations I don’t recall any saying that they wanted the people to go their independent ways. So that’s a different issue altogether.

This Ozekome postulation is quite interesting and very sound. The problem with Nigeria is not lack of brilliant ideas but the inability to follow through. The way things are done in this country will certainly ensure that the referendum which is being espoused as the only thing that will provide the proof of a buy in by the Nigerian people, stands a more than 99% chance of being rigged in favor of the people in whose hands the British government prefer to use to destabilize and exploit us all. This reminds one of one track in Bob Marley’s record album “Uprising “ in which stated / sang “They don’t want to see us live together. All they want us to do is killing one another ~~~top ranking, top ranking --!!!

This is the solution to Nigeria. The question is how does the National assembly embrace this and move the motion?? I don't see it happening with the kind of people we have there. Anything that takes away their luxury will be opposed vehemently. God help Nigeria

Beautiful address, well articulated and lucidly delivered. Yet I beg to disagree that the 2014 national conference suffice as a people constitution. That documents is flawed in that the government set no go areas hence the national question was not addressed.
If Nigeria constitutional anomaly is to be cured permanently, a new national conference with delegates elected from the grass roots and with none of the delegates appointed by external forces.
These representatives will deliberate and produce a document that represents the will of the people of Nigeria.
Then the document produces will be taken back to the people in a referendum and when the people of Nigeria have agreed to the contents of the constitution then will be binding to the people.

Interesting take and quite instructive. I respect the erudite scholar & brilliant legal luminary, however, one place I tend not to agree is the 6 geopolitical zone structure of government. What is it going to be? Mind you one geopolitical zone is short of one state and will feel marginalized, but how does it fit into the 3 tiers of govt or the 3 arms of government? Who will fund it & will that not cancel out what ever you save from removing the bicameral legislature?
I think simply doing a referendum and altering the arrangement to reduce the immense powers at the center & allowing the states control majority of their resources while also being held accountable on all fronts including security will help.
Remove litigation immunity from some leaders ensure they run a transparent govt. this will help reduce corruption and abuse of office while allowing them work for the people from whom they really derive their powers.

My issue with Mr. Ozekhome is that most time when people from the south eastern part of this country are discussing about Nigeria and how the marriage failed. They always failed technically to establish the fact that the leaders from their region are the architect of every problem we are facing from 1st republic till now. White people have establish a system that they feel will work for us not until the 1st coup lead by a southerner soldiers, secondly the abolishment of parliamentary system to presidential by Agu Irosi, failed 3rd civilian government lead by Arthur Nzeribe or what about one million man endorsement of Sanni Abacha by one Daniel Kalu. One think that is common is that south easterner only aggrieve when the equation does not favour them.

Even if you have the best constitution, it is not going to be implemented by angels but by Nigerians.
Even if they were to be implemented by angels, they too are not infallible.
The constitution of the greatest country in the world - The United States is not perfect. It has been amended a number of times but it has stood the test of time by a strict adherance to its provisions.
We have refused to model/adhere to the same principles as indicated above. If the Nigerian electoral law provides for the Independence of INEC, it should truly be so. If our constitution upholds justice, equity, freedom of speech, and of association, it should be so in practice.
If it says that you need to score 25% of the valid votes cast in a presidential election to be elected as president, among other provisions, it should be so.
Until we see, hold and operate the constitution as the grundnorm, we shall continue to talk and talk and talk.

I feel your passion for a better Nigeria, Mr Ozekome. However, this will remain just "another talk". You are speaking to those holding Nigeria in bo*ndage and you are delegating a major role to them on implementation of 2014 CONFAB Report. That will NEVER happen.
When you talked about regional government and 1963 constitution, I laughed. The leaders then performed because they were selfless. For instance, how many house did Awolowo build? How may cars? How many foreign investments?
Compare it to how many the governor (or even LG Chairman) of small states like Ekiti, Ebonyi and Nassarawa have today.
That is why it is now very difficult for them to "let go of Nigeria" today.

Ozekhome is striving to push Nigeria to step up against what the Biafran government in exile has determined to accomplish by October this year in Finland. He even wants the federal government to get it done within six months (September) just before the convention in Finland. However the Nigerian government is deaf and blind, the Biafrans are ahead and will have their freedom. MNKwas wise in sacking Ozekhome and Ejiofor.
