The key Mercedes change revealed by Aston Martin’s 2024 F1 car

  • Aston Martin is gunning for Red Bull with its 2024 F1 car - which has revealed a key change that Mercedes has made.
Aston Martin started last year as Red Bull’s closest challengers and has made “changes all over” with its 2024 car, which it hopes will be able to fight for a first win in this identity - the last victory coming as Racing Point in 2020.
It has adopted the view that Red Bull is “absolutely beatable” in 2024, with technical director Dan Fallows declaring Aston Martin is “very pleased with what we’ve been able to achieve but this is the first step”.
What Mercedes has done will play a significant role in that. We’ve known that Mercedes wanted to make a big mechanical platform change with its 2024 car after two years of struggling to crack this era of technical regulations, and the AMR24 gives us the first clue of how Mercedes intends to do that.

It's easy to make the prediction that RB will continue to dominate from where they left off in the 2023 season but time will tell, primarily the first few races will be very telling where things stand. AMR seems pretty confident going into this season and I'm also cautiously optimistic about their prospects this year. Many of their racing operation investments have come good this year, primarily their own wind tunnel although I believe the 24 car was still designed in the old one but regardless they moved into a new office and their processes have been more streamlined all with the hope that it will improve development to the car throughout the year. Really looking forward to this season.

My issue isn't the launch car, or how good it looks with the newer platform. It's this teams ability to actually develop the car over the season. RB won't get a lot of time and testing, but they're unleashed to use all the time they will be given. They can't spend another 6 weeks in limbo trying to figure out why they're going backward instead of forward

the sole reason zeropods didn't work for merc is because of suspension geometry if the rules were set for maybe 10 years? merc would have absolutely kept the same design and start changing the suspension system slowly by slowly its just that they had just 3 years to go from a cardinal mistake to a race winning car, redbull got lucky that newey was the only one on the grid to have already worked with ground effects so he knew what problems they might face, if newey went zeropods with the push rod at the front and pull at the back there is no doubt he will fail again that is going against his own aero philosophy

The first couple of races could tell us if RBR will be dominant on 2024 too, but there are reasons to believe that this season could be at least "interesting". Silly season aside, on the years 2004, 2011 and 2020 we saw some of the most dominant seasons of F1 at the time, but on each one of them just a year later we got some of the best seasons F1's got to offer. That doesn't mean 24 will be great, neither that Max will not win the next WDC (Vettel won on 2012 for that matter, but the championship battle lasted until the very last race)

Not mentioned as a weakness (or strength) was the way the 2023 car used its tires compared to the rest. it was esier on them for the most part but that led to them not being able to fire the tires up in qualifying at times, or to bulid temps after a stop In cool conditions. Also last years car had a drag penalty that was only partially addressed as the season progressed. I'm assuming those things have been considered in this years car.

lotta comments saying it wont be enough to beat RB. But, they forget that verstappen is what RB wins with. if anything puts him out of a race or two race for health reasons, the entire RB superstructure begins to crumble, rapidly... Verstappen is a single point of failure for RB. Whereas teams like Ferrari, Aston, Merc and McClaren have the driver talent spread evenly around. Max may have had his days, or possibly have more. Either way, it is inevitable that talent will peak at some stage and then will subdue.

The only major thing I think that could put Merc Aston in front, would be that changing the cooling of the Merc engine from the very tight zero pod concept . This could enable better cooling and thus run the engine higher and counter the aero advantage of the Redbull with brute force.

Sidepod shape and concept on it's own is incredibly overrated, as have been said by many, many people who understand more about this generation of cars than we all here do... They said countless times, that whats much more important to the overall car performance is underneath the car, or generally in area's that we can't see. Therefore I highly doubt that a change in sidepod dimensions could be the big thing that puts them in front again.
Oh, and you simply can't beat superior aerodynamics with "brute force" in F1... Those times are long (and I mean decades!) gone

Shocking two different versions of the 2024 car before testing. Who would have thought? lol Only significant reveal is suspension and not at all shocking. Actually as predictable as the sun rising and setting every day.
As for convergence old, old, old news. If you cannot beat them copy them as best you can. But wait RB hasn't been sitting with its thumb up its butt. And if history is prologue all other teams that are not RB have a lot of copying to do.
And then there is the last factor. RB has Max and who in their right mind would not make him the odds on favourite to win it all again even where the cars are theoretically equal?
