Bought a 3 year old for my wife 8 years ago as a stop gap. Still got it and now use it for my work vehicle. Total cost in 8 years, front brakes £40, rear exhaust box £45, battery £40. Zero tax on ours, £120 per year insurance. 50-60 mpg. Great in the winter with decent tyres too. Cheap tyres - £55 or £71 for top of the range.

Hi Lee. Great advice and practical tips on what to look out for with the Citroen C1. I’ve driven the C1 as a car loan whilst my old car was undergoing repair and is quite spacious for a 6 foot person to sit in as well as fun steering. Worth every penny when sold.

My kids had one , it really is the cheapest pos imaginable. The rear hatch leaks like a sieve the boot is always wet. Suffers from about three of four leak areas, rubber seals, rear side light foam, weld leaks, top brake light. It took me three repairs to solve it. The gear linkage wears and is all loose, the white nylon ball wears the nylon bush.
Instrument lights are chip on board non repairable. The rear windows are a cheap flip open, but but properly hinged so they bend the metal tabs and unglue from the glass. The engine is so rough, it vibrates due to three cylinder. It had only done 30k when they bought it. Definitely cheap budget motoring, I admire your positivity. It has not broken down on the plus side.

We’ve had our Peugeot 107 (same car essentially as Citroen C1 and Argo) for 4 years, and, these are really great little cars: incredibly reliable, ours doesn’t require car tax to be paid, cheap to run, and any spares dead easy to find and surprisingly cheap as well…had it for 4 years, first 3 mots, pass with no advisories, this year, was pass, with just advisory for front tyres, but that was something we suspected already, and tyres are cheap as well…
Even the thing about them not having Bluetooth or sat nav can be easily fixed with either a cheap Bluetooth fm transmitter, or even the android Bluetooth dashboard interface, which isn’t hugely expensive, and you can install yourself…
An absolutely great little car…can’t recommend them enough…

I would have bought a C1, but the Yaris is a slight step up in terms of 'plushness', and the doors close with a thump, rather than a clang. Some years ago, after someone crashed into me, I received an Aygo of this vintage as a get-around car while the insurance co assessed my car. Great fun to drive.

    I had the 1.4 HDi diesel version of the C1, bought brand new in 2009 and kept if for 8 years (mine was a VTR so had aircon, electric windows etc). Smashing little car, that never once dipped below 60mpg, however the diesel is well down on power compared to the petrol (54bhp vs 68bhp I believe) although it has plenty of torque so doesn't need to be revved to maintain progress. Two gripes with the oil-burner;
    1. It sounds very dull (unlike the raspy note from the 3-cyl petrol version)
    2. The diesel lump is heavy, and although it has stronger front springs it still feels heavier on the steering etc. I felt it upset the balance of the car.
As with almost all of them, mine suffered water ingress around the high-level brake light. The issue being that the lamp unit has only two mounting screws (one at each end) and when tightened down they cause the plastic lamp body to distort, resulting in water leakage past the (thin, foam rubber) gasket. All easily fixed with a thin bead of silicone and by being careful to *not* over-tighten the screws.
Cheap and (very) cheerful motoring, as driving it rarely failed to put a smile on my face.

Hi, enjoyed your video immensely as I had a 2012/61-reg C1 (a VTR+) and sold it in 2020 with 90000 miles on the clock. It still had the same radio/CD player as yours.
Average fuel consumption was 55mpg (5.1 L/100km) but as a former owner of two Lada's I was reluctant to put any car into 5th below 80 km/h, so others may have obtained better results. The biggest problem with it was the water pump as the early models had poor water pumps and/or gaskets, and the red residue on the engine block is a giveaway and a lot of pound signs for main dealers. Also exhaust corrosion and wear - which will happen with any car. Mine had to have a new back box. Never had any clutch problems with the car. Anyway it is great to see old bugs still being kept on the road.
I currently own an 18 plate C1 mk2, a mid-range 2 door model with electric windows. No rev counter on mine, but none of the mk2's have a proper analogue rev counter, just a strip of LED's to the left of the speedo in the top spec models. However there are change up/ change down indicators and while they were initially irritating, they seem to be sensibly calibrated. Also the mk2's have a proper glove box.

It's a pretty decent car with all you need, and I've been really surprised by the amount of poke it has, especially when moving off! It zooms away like a good 'un. Around town we're getting 38 mpg and I'll be expecting around 60 mpg when it's holiday time. It's black and it looks really nice when it's all polished up.

I've driven mine long distance and I think it's fine. You're not going to experience Lexus style comfort but my 107 is actually more comfortable than many newer and bigger cars belonging to friends because the seats in their cars are rock hard. It's like sitting on a church pew. The seats in my Peugeot are quite soft in comparison.

Bought a 2006 c1 vibe in June 2020 as my first car for a grand. I was impatient to get driving despite the fact it wasn't in amazing condition. It had a previous LPG conversion (why idk) which was botched on partial removal and cost me a lot to remove and caused a semi permanent engine warning light. Beside that it passed 2 MOTs with minimal advisories, decided id had enough when the radiator produced a load of orange gunk all over the engine bay. I was quite rotten on the sills, especially at the back like you said despite having some rather questionable welding...Still it was my first car and I thought it was AMAZING despite no aircon, Bluetooth, no electric window or a rev counter and 3 doors. It always started first time and brought me such joy and independence id never had before. But felt like it was costing more than it was worth so sold for a Hyundai i10, another amazing car!

Brilliant cars. Not much to go wrong on them. Light flywheel leads to worn clutches,.and they like to leak a bit if water in the boot through the lamp seals. The odd column stalk foible and a bit of grot on the back of the sill and that's about it other than laquer peel on the bumpers. This will fly out the door 👍👍

They are great, I had one albeit fairly new during the recession used it to keep money coming in doing work anywhere I could 70k in two years it was fab even I managed to service it etc only bad thing was cross winds on m’ way, but it was only when really bad. I sold it for almost what I paid for it as well, anyway daughter needed a car a few years back bought another but oldie (knowing she’d ruin it) I fitted a wheel bearing replaced the power steering module and due to her carrying 4 friends in it ! It’s a four seater, had to replace the fuel pump because they had broken the neck off the thing under the back seat. Again was great, she ruined it but had for 3 years sold it for scrap so all told 600 quid for 3 years fab.

    Greetings from Manchester.
In regards to owning a vehicle in the UK, it is not only the car you buy. Maintenance is one aspect you're facing, but the biggest expense is the insurance. As a foreign driver (on European driving licence), I've started paying on my 206cc 2000 pounds per year insurance. Since 2015, is 100 pounds monthly. Still a lot of money.

I owned three of the C1 model; first one brand new and then two used examples. My commute was a 84 mile round trip so over 21K miles per annum before any other trips added in. I never had a single problem from them because there is so little to go wrong in the first place. A lot of the miles were on the motorway so perhaps the number of gear changes was less than average and the infrequent braking lead to front discs rusting on one car. Due to my driving style rather than a true fault and I learnt to brake hard at the junction of the exit slip roads to give the disks a scrub. I gave my last car to my son as his first commuter ride and he has only just replaced it after 3 years, still running fine. Why did they replace the original model with what appears to be a more complex and expensive variant?
