    Small little euro hatches like this can be amazingly reliable. A friend of mine had a 2005 Clio which was owned by his older brother then his older sister then him and now his younger sister. The car has only ever had regular working done when needed and never let any of them down. Another pal had a mk2 Punto sporting from new for 17 years until someone crashed into him. It had 307,000 miles on it and got nothing other than regular work too. Small euro cars are king of the road

    I ran a C3 of that generation for a while, it was a good car and maybe the most comfortable small hatchback ever. It’s hard to find a good one, but if you do find a good low mileage car with history that has been cherished then you won’t regret it.

  • @HAYDNBBH

    I had the c2 1.4 as my first car, was cheaper to insure than the 1.2 surprisingly. It was like a toy car looking back but at the time it felt like an s class to me,it never did lock from the fob or the blade so I'd just leave it unlocked and no one stole it. The engine was peppy and had a split tailgate but ultimately blew up so was basically a ranger rover 😂

      Only thing that can go wrong with the old 1.1 (technically 1.2) or 1.4 TU-engines is the head gasket which on these is by far the cheapest head gasket swap I've ever seen.
      That's it.

      I've owned 2. They've provided me with extremely reliable, very economical ( 64.6 to 72 mpg w a 1.4 l hdti) transport. Their rear seats are short only in leg room, but I rarely use the back seats as I can put them down and have a big, easy access opened hatchback to load plenty when necessary. I'm 6'1 and find the driving position and available space very adequate. Both of mine have been quite nippy little cars. Strangely, my present 2006 C3 is only slightly less zippy, but it's a higher spec Desire model. It has great visibility, £30 p/year road tax and very inexpensive to insure. It's very handy in tight space re parking and manouvering. Overall, a very good little car. Obviously, it's important to know who and how previous owners treated them. Both of my C3s were one owner which also suggests reliable service to them as they've looked after them well.

      I think the styling is fantastic and they have a soft comfy ride and lots of internal space. . Unfortunately the build quality is not great. The most annoying issue is that if the central locking packs up you can't lock the car... If they spent £500 each more on building them it could have been really good.

The whole of France seems to drive things like this, and they are meant to be damaged/abused and used as mobile dustbins, never cleaned or loved. I wasn’t a fan as the gears didn’t feel as slick as a Fiesta and disliked the digital speedo. It’s rattled a bit suspension wise on rough roads but nothing was ever seriously worn when inspected. It did have some suspension bits over the years and a new exhaust, a heater resistor from memory. But it was comfy and cheapish motoring with the 1.6 not being the most economical option of engine, it did however never burn oil and never had any mechanical issues engine wise. In my (1st gen) AX I t-boned another car when I was doing 50mph. No airbags. I survived.
      I thrashed that engine until the valves bounced, every day, and it never blew its gasket. Windscreen was never any trouble either, until I cracked it with my face. Unrefined though.

    • @Barbarapape
      @Barbarapape Před 6 měsíci

      I should have rejected my AX, but back then the consumer rights were very weak.
      My local windscreen fitter thought that some of the welds had not been done and the body
      was flexing causing the windscreens to crack.
      The head gasket went just out of warranty, the garage that repaired it said that it was a
      common issue, a few months later it was written off.
      No way would i buy another Citroen, thin metal and cheap plastics a bit like todays
      Dacia's.@@hunchanchoc8418

    Huh, I used to think £500 was 'cheap' - until I bought my 2008 C3 1.4hdi two years ago for......£300! Even I had to giggle getting a completely fine little car for that sum! Had long MOT, clean interior good bodywork and apart from a bit of grille and part of Citroen badge missing, it just needed a new battery.
    I do a lot of mileage and have taken it up close to 200,000 with no problems whatsoever. With incredibly cheap tax......this has 'really' been 'cheap motoring'!
    The funny thing with my various cheap cars over the years is that people get the idea I have no interest in cars - when actually that couldn't be further from the truth.......just that I love the 'art' of driving, but don't like losing money on 'status' vehicles.

    I bought a 2008 1.4hdi C3 . They drive pretty good for a small car. They are really good on diesel better than some hybrids. They dont look great but if your not vain they are a good little car. Seats are more comfortble than the 307 from the same era.

  • @niprbmw_210
    @niprbmw_210 Před 6 měsíci +7

    The C3 was kinda a good car except for the Pluriel models, they have this sort off roof thing that you have to remove the pillars and store them somewhere because obviously it wouldn't stay in the car.
    The C3 styling wasn't my cup of tea but it's alright unlike the Pluriel which I don't like.

    Thanks for the video, as always. Why, oh why don't people wishing to sell / trade in their vehicle spend a couple of bucks and clean it or get it cleaned first? They would "polish value into the vehicle", a phrase I first heard on Wheeler Dealer more years ago than I care to remember. I've done it since and it pays off.

  • @johnnunn8688

    The engine doesn’t have to have a knackered head gasket, to have coolant mix with the oil. Short journeys and condensation will have the same mayo effect.

    It would be a good car with the rust fixed and a basic service. Glad someone seems to be saving it. That cars like this in the UK are so cheap is not really such a bad thing. New car sales may drop soon due to interest rates meaning cars like this may even go up in value. We seem to be sort of car snobs in the UK, taking out loans to buy cars? It means those who can spend some time fixing the cheap cars themselves get proper bargains.

    I have particular thoughts about the french, don't ask, but in 1990 I bought an 83 Peugeot 505 turbodiesel. I had it for 11 years. The longest I have ever owned a car. That car was solid as a rock. It gave me very little trouble except of course, like all french cars, it was completely underpowered.
    I would never, though, ever buy a Citroën.

It drove like new when I sold it @85K for £1000. Everything worked. Ice cold AC. No warning lights. If you find one that's had the money spent on it they're great cars. 65mpg average.
