  • Well, they sure don't make them like they used to. The 2022 4Runner brings the goods, but for how long?

Matt Smith loves driving the 4Runner, but even he has to wonder how a vehicle like this outsells some more comfortable crossovers. Without a doubt, this body-on-frame SUV has a level of capability that the Toyota Highlander can't match, but it also sports an old interior, terrible fuel economy, and plenty of noise. Watch our full video review to get a sense of who the 4Runner is meant for, and who may want to look elsewhere.

Virtually every popular vehicle on the road has been watered down to please those who live in Suburbia, those who want to look "rugged" but never do any actual off-roading. I am grateful for Toyota continuing to produce this amazing SUV, one of the last that has legit off-road capability. This vehicle isn't for everyone, but those of us who it was designed for are happy to live with its compromises

Purchased our 2013 4Runner New. It is 7 passenger, 4wd, 163k and it still gets 20.2 mpg. Only “repairs” have been the rubber on the rear door handle degrading, 1 tps sensor, and a cruise control switch that broke from a heavy hand. Great vehicle!

Gas prices shouldn’t be this high and wouldn’t if we didn’t cancel the majority of our domestic oil production. That 4.0 1GR engine and 5-speed are proven designs. The 4Runner will outlast any unibody CUV or "SUV" 3-4x over. A 3- or 4-banger with cylinder deactivation, auto start/stop, a turbocharger, and a 10-speed or a CVT, can get 30 mpg, but the repair costs and depreciation will eat up a lot of the fuel savings in the long run. There's a reason these hold their value.

We purchased a limited for our work vehicle and could not be happier. I come from driving vehicles with MUCH more amenities, and thought I would miss all of the gadgets. Honestly, this thing is perfect. As a former software engineer, I like me some gadgets, but I just hope that if Toyota does anything across their product line, they keep the 4R just as it is. I can get 22-23 highway, 18 combined, and can tow a 3k lb trailer and still get 14-15, I can accept that as.a trade off for it's many strengths. Everything is bulletproof and I can expect to get 200k miles out of it before we pass it on. If they do go 2022 Tundra on the 4R, and add the V6, etc., I will just look for an older 4R to replace. Please, Toyota appease the tech and gadget people with something else to play with, leave the 4Runner alone...it's perfect as it is.

Have 205,000 miles on my 2008 4Runner Sport with zero problems! Original engine, transmission, and shocks! I've only done the usual maintenance. Finally changed the transmission fluid (drain & fill twice) at 190,000 miles. Toyota says "lifetime fluid", but I felt guilty and finally changed it anyway. The old fluid didn't look that bad coming out, and the magnet on the drain plug had almost no metal on it. They are so well built! It's a fun vehicle to drive and utterly reliable and capable. Doesn't have much "tech" to it, but then again, I'll take reliability (and low ownership costs) over the latest "gee-wiz" tech gadgets. Nice review.

The best trim is the off road premium. The kdss really makes a huge difference for helping with body roll.. The big old school knobs is something I really like. When wearing work gloves being able to change the climate control is something you can not do in modern vehicles that most rely on touchscreen. It has a very tactile feel to it. Most vehicles these days are wayy too techy and most customers will not even use most of the tech offerings that most cars try to lure you with. The simplicity of the 4 runner and feeling you get when traveling thousand of miles trough paved and unpaved is something I have never experienced before. It has never failed me in some environments I thought would not be possible.. tried and tru I am keeping my 4 runner off road premium. Just enough comfort creatures for me. It’s my adventure vehicle which demands to unleash its off road capabilities .

    Nerd!
I own a 2006 Wrangler Rubicon. Reviewers have been bashing Wranglers for decades but they sell, they hold their value, and their simplicity means they’ll last forever.
My fiancé just bought a 2020 4Runner SR5 and we both love it. Neither she nor I want a vehicle that’s over complicated and guaranteed to come with a massive repair bill if some tiny feature or nanny-feature breaks.

If you buy one with kdss you won't have all that body roll.
I rented a non-kdss 4runner for a trip and its suspension was really soft and it would nose dive whenever I touched the brakes. I bought a 2022 ORP with kdss and it handles great, it turns really flat and doesn't nose dive like the non-kdss version. Test a kdss version and you'll see.

Great Review. You nailed it. When I was shopping for a new SUV, I made the same comments you did. Why am I going to pay $6K extra for a cooler, roof basket, and sliding deck? I bought a base SR5 for a lot less. I use this for Sport/Utility , camping, towing, carrying a canoe to the river, driving on unpaved roads, driving in snow/sleet/rain. Living in New England these are great in the winter for traction, safety, and the heated front wipers, heated mirrors ,rear defroster are great. Sure heated seats ,heated steering wheel are nice, but a real man does not need creature comforts. Its not about technology in a 4 runner ...it's about style and versatilty. I can pick up groceries and take the kids to soccer practice, but I can also climb mountains. Try that in your soccer mom mobiles they sell by the millions.

We are about to pull the trigger on a 22 SR5 Premium with 3 row. As a family of 5 and long term Land Cruiser owners, this is the only thing available now in the US. The appeal of it is the fact it’s old school. The fact it’s going to forced induction and/or hybrid next year is the primary reason we are buying this one now and plan to keep it for the long haul.

Nice honest review all be it suburbanesque. Most of your criticism is accurate of a Trail which is a base SR5 with cheesy cosmetics that appeal to city folk. Black trim, a roof rack and a cooler dont help a great deal when shes knee deep in the soup. TRD offroad premium with KDSS way better value hands down. My 2022 4runner replaced a 14yr old Nissan Xterra (worst vehicle I've ever owned btw) so in comparison this thing is a space ship. I bought it for reliability and capability. And added bonus, when the 4cyl turbo unitbody comes out, the prices on these 'dinosaurs' will ascend faster than Falcon 9.

Generally, yes. TRD Pro will retain resale value better, and usually people who get Pros don’t do much, if any after market upgrades. Off Road/Off Road premium gives you all the functional capabilities (4WD, ATRAC, Crawl Control, etc) but without the expensive flashy stuff on the Pro (TRD Skid Plate, roof basket, Fox suspension).
