@@kenteel2944Yeah, he never claimed to be "the best guitar player in the world" and he certainly wasn't - The Beatles' most intriguing guitar solo is played by Paul McCartney on "Taxman" but it's one of the songs that changed music and it is written by Harrison.
Harrison was, foremost, a flawless songwriter. Lyrics, melody, arrangement... no wonder Paul and John got protective of their Beatles writing monopoly, later on praising George in his solo career.

I came looking for their duet version of 'This Guitar,' never expecting this video of the actual basic session. George Harrison was confident, fresh off his 1991 tour with Eric Clapton and band, plus the live televised 30th Anniversary tribute to Bob Dylan (subject of the Neil Young discussion), and had quit smoking in 1991 before touring Japan. I wish this crew had stayed together to bang out what became George's 'Brainwashed' but the Beatles Anthology started soon after this, no regrets there.

This Guitar Cant Keep From Crying is one of George Harrison s`best songs. Sadly it was not played on the radio. The record company choose "You", a simple song.

This Guitar was the second single from Extra Texture. I heard it on the radio a time or two but, for some strange reason, it wasn't a hit. It seemed like a more natural single than You. I never understood why it wasn't a big hit. It was the very last Apple single and George's first not to chart.

Funny to hear George dissing Young. This was the Bob Dylan 30th Anni Concert in 1992. This would of been during the My Back Pages tune. Which if you watch it (there is a camera angle) that shows GE Smith pointing to Neil as to do the solo.
Anyway, this clip is funny because Harrison was closer to John than he was to Paul. I have a cd of Lennon (home recording) where he is throwing Dylan under the bus over his Gotta Serve Somebody song.

I find that some people who rave about certain guitar players - then you listen to it - and you think too many notes - fast playing chord/scale changes that signifies nothing - Motorhead plays fast as it drives the music. Though watched a YT on Mark Knopfler and I was entertained - his playing creates a feeling . As for EC - he's alright - but most of his stuff seems anemic to me - like his slow ballads lie beautiful tonight or whatever it's called . .
We all have great musos we don't like - can't stand Joni. M singing. Van Morrison great songwriter - can only listen to a couple of his songs at a time . Phil Collins - great musician - can listen when - it comes on - wouldn't buy his albums - same for EC - probably turn off cocaine - as its just blah - same as heart of gold by NY - like the melody - but lyrics are blah

He made simple stripped down rock and melt your heart country rock. I am probably a bigger fan of Neil than George to be honest, yet how can you disregard either one? It boggles my mind when I disagree with someone I respect, but that is the way of the world. If we were all the same in every way it might be less interesting to say the least. Thankfully, even Neil seems unaffected by criticism. Think about Sweet Home Alabama and the fact that from what I have heard Skynrd and Neil still were friendly towards each other. We can disagree and not be hateful towards each other. That’s what I do my best to remember.

If you ever read interviews with people like Bob Dylan or Van Morrison you quickly are surprised at how some of their opinions are easily understood and some surprising. I remember that people like Jerry Garcia just had no appreciation for The Doors. It is the same in every genre. Some lost interest in Big Band Swing jazz and preferred Bebop. Satchmo probably had reservations about the style and vice versa. I always love it when an artist I like who is newer pays respect to an older artist. I am certain the older and more established artists always take a while to adapt to the new, but often the newer artists are doing there best hopefully to move beyond what has come before. I am sure these fly on the wall views of all our favorite artists would boggle our minds. The unguarded moment is pretty revealing.

Anyone who says Neil Young plays one note solos are referencing one song (cinnamon girl) - which happens to be his most popular and commercial song. I personally hate that song, however neil young never really plays "one string" or "one not solos" -- if you know anything about music theory will know that many cultures use microtonal scales to achieve subtle - yet distinctive - sounds that aren't often incorporated in traditional western music. George should know this, especially considering the beatles were so influenced by eastern music at times in their career... I'm gonna be a know it all and make the assertion that Neil Young plays in such a way that only people who can really feel his music get what he's playing. I understand if george doesn't care for his style, but to say neil plays "one note" solos is just plain ignorance to the highest degree and it bothers me to no end.

Whats the point of judging one man's opinion on another artist? Personally I can't stand George's penchant for Indian sitar music and usually tune out those songs. But I still greatly admire George's songwriting, music and overall talent. I have found that I flip flop about Neil Young's music between loving and being annoyed by it. I love his acoustic playing and singing. When I was first learning to solo on electric guitar I was amazed at how close I could get to Neil's electric "style" with nowhere near the talent of a good player. I did it with pentatonic patterns, distortion, bending and one note repetition. Admittedly...I sucked. But I was waaaay closer to Neil Young (in my mind) than I would ever be to Eric Clapton (my guitar idol). Do I care what G.H. thinks of N.Y.....or vice versa???? Not ONE BIT. I admire and respect them both and at any given time will binge listen to both of their catalogs because their music moves me. This video was historically interesting, but won't even hint at changing my opinion of either artist. It's just off the cuff talking after all.

Such an amateurish opinionated view on other's music, doesn't really hold well for an old Beatles member, or for any successful musician. I like Neil Young's music, guitar solos, and vocals as much as I like Beatles songs, which are lacking any solo instrument work. Shouldn't compare these different approaches. He seems to play fine rhythm guitar on his acoustic self-accompaniment on studio recordings and in concert performances. He's just not a real guitar geek. He's primarily a very good songwriter who doesn't particularly sing very well when you get right down to it who is really more about social & political activism than he is about being a true musician. For my money, the taller the soapbox and the louder the megaphone, the lesser the musician the man or woman usually is. I'd rather listen to people who can really play instead of wanna-bees who hide behind instruments when they should just run for office already and leave the music to the professionals. I can't stand wanna-bees in the world of music who are famous for all the wrong fucking reasons. Some women are stars simply because of their tits and ass or their social justice warrior agenda. If it wasn't for John Lennon she'd be hawking her wares at a yard sale somewhere and she'd probably be arrested for suspicion of cruelty to animals every time she opened her yap to try to sing. As for male 'artists' who are faux stars, for the life of me I cannot understand all the rage about John Mayer!?! And Kenny G?! Give me a break! I won't even mention so-called country stars who are absolute posers - the list is too damn long! I am beginning to wonder if there is still an MK Ultra lab running somewhere, where mad scientists and CIA operatives are cranking out counterfeit pop-star overnight sensations in their cookie-cutter assembly line to saturate the market with music fakes and wannabees while someone with a LOT of money is flooding the media with cash payoffs to insure their dominating exposure in every market. The truth is a vast majority of the populace buys music that is popular rather than buying for personal preference. Most people do not even know what a good singer sounds like or what a real musician sounds like when they play.
