  • There is a lot of different options available to you when you play handheld systems like the Game Boy or Game Gear on the RG351P or RG351M. So in this guide I'll walk you through how to set up overlays, shaders, colorization, and ghosting in order to accurately recreate those original handheld systems.

I still haven’t gotten Mame artwork to display tho. On ArkOS. Trying to get backdrops to display, such as in Asteroids deLuxe. Even though it is probably going to make everything harder to see on the small screen, I want to see it working. Have spent a good deal of time on it over this past months. All in all arcade emulation is confusing on this device. There are Mame folders everywhere. Tried putting the artwork files in various roms Mame subfolders, bios subfolders, ftp’ed into Retroarch’s system folder. Nothing.

Forgive me if you've already made a video on this but I can't seem to find one, I'm trying to see if there's a way on my rg351p to map certain controls per individual game (within RetroArch). Because of the way just mapping the default controls works, it means fixing them for certain games messes it up for others. Anyway if there's a simple fix I'm not seeing or a process I can take to do this I'd really love your insight, thanks!

So I've gone through three of these devices and they all have just a little bit of light bleed on the left side (this isn't why I've gone through them, one had marks behind the screen, etc). Given that the default is to have a black border on the sides for things like the SNES (if you correct the aspect ratio), these overlays look like a great solution to insert a light border on the sides for people like myself that get annoyed by the bleeding (as minor as it is). I was wondering how this would be possible so great video.

I’ve watched almost all of your videos and am really enjoying my RG351P!
I’m having trouble with overlays in 351Elec...
I set the GBC overlay from your guide and set the LCD3x shader. I accidentally set the GBC overlay for ALL cores. I couldn’t remove this, so I factory reset. Now, the GBC overlay is still applied, but shows up as black. When I switch to a different overlay, it still shows as black. The opacity is at 100.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Or...which config file to delete to fully reset this?
Thanks again for all your great videos!
Edit: The overlay does show up for a brief second when I put the system to sleep, and when it wakes back up. Has this ever happened to you? Thanks!
Edit 2: For anyone else having this problem, I missed this part of the guide...
“If the overlay is not appearing, go into Quick Menu > On-Screen Overlays > Hide Overlay when Gamepad is Connected > OFF”
    It’s working now!! :)

Even though the original Game Gear used an LCD screen it was not square pixel. The original Game Gear screen was 66mm x 50mm which is 4:3 aspect ratio. The authentic way to play Game Gear is without integer scaling and using a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Gameboy used a square pixel LCD, so using integer scaling for Gameboy is true.

Hi, I don't have a video on it. If you're using EmuELEC, then the bezel project should work, but you'll want to refer to the bezel project's wiki/GitHub for instructions. Long story short, your ROMs need to match the "no intro" romset naming convention in order to work.

This is great. The RG351P is a great quality handheld. But would this guide work for the Odroid Go Super as well (Batocera)? Any chance of a video guide for it?

Everything but the bezels part will be the same. It has different dimensions so these particular bezels won’t work!

Update shaders option isn't available for me and I've confirmed I'm online... Ideas?

Does anyone know how to make the PSX games full screen? Am I missing something? I’ve looked everywhere but can’t seem to make it so the core fills up the screen. I still have black bars on the sides AND top. I’m using the most recent version of ArkOS. HEELLLLPPPP 🙂

Your guides are awesome! One quick question. Is there an easy way to duplicate the SD card to another one? I have two kids and it would be amazing to only have to work on configuring one card make it perfect and then just duplicated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, yep you can just backup the SD card image using an app like Win32 Disk Imager or Balena Etcher, then write it onto a new SD card. For best results do it on the same size card.

I'm using 351Elec and I can't seem to find a way to save video settings for one directory or core at a time. I don't seem to have an option in retroarch for overrides. What am I missing?

Check out the written guide, I walk you through all the quirks of 351ELEC. Long story short, the RA settings have mostly been moved to the EmulationStation menu and so the ES settings will override whatever you do in RA. Check out the guide!

I can just not get this to save, keeps reverting back to 4.0 for brightness. Using 351ELEC pinepple version. Any ideas?
If you want to adjust the shader, you have to do it in RetroArch. Open up the game, then press SELECT + X to open the Quick Menu, then go to Shaders > Shader Parameters and adjust the scanlines or LCD to your tastes. For example, I like to use the lcd3x shader with a shader brightness of 6.0 instead of the standard 4.0 - this gives a very subtle grid effect.
To set it as default, go to Shaders > Save > Save Content Directory Preset.
