Our Isle of Man adventure in the Jaguar XKR got off to a great start following our 300+ mile drive and ferry journey, but now it's time to have fun! The A36, otherwise known as the Sloc, is a stunning road winding up into the mountains on the island. Most people assume the TT course is the definitive drive on the Isle of Man, but we'd have to disagree! Granted, the 400BHP supercharged V8 Jag made light work of it, but the stunning views and incredible drive can just as easily be enjoyed in an MGB, Triumph TR6, Porsche 911 or Morris Minor - this drive alone makes the Isle of Man worth visiting!

I first fell in love with the XK8 after seeing an early model used in the film Entrapment featuring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones. Always wanted one ever since. Beautiful things that time has been very kind to.

Having driven the IOM circuit I can certainly agree that the roads are spectacular to drive. Having owned an XKR I feel it is probably a bit too grand tourer to fully exploit and enjoy the roads to their full potential. However, the rest of the journey will be conducted in comfort with a very large smile on your face.

You can get a bit more fun out of it with the J-Gate to some degree but a manual would be best on these roads for sure. A gated shifter would be even better. The only problem with a manual conversion is that you no longer have an automatic, so you would need to buy two cars one as a manual and the other as an auto or just buy two different cars. A Jaguar and a TVR, one for comfort and fun and the other for just fun and raw.

Given that the XKR's gearbox is a Mercedes unit, there must be some tuning one can do to the computer that'll speed or firm up manual shifting. Hmm, there has to be an aftermarket supplier that's already done that...

@@ofmanynicknames Mine and the one in the video use a 6 speed ZF unit, the older ones use a Merc unit. It's a ZF6HP26 to be exact. You can make the shifts quicker with replacing the selonoids to a brown type although I would think this will put extra wear on the gearbox. The shifts are pretty quick as standard, faster then I could in a manual and faster then I should think most people could shift smoothly. A fluid change will bring the shift speeds to a better speed anyway which I would say is the best and cheapest way to get better shifting.
There was an aftermarket unit that you could have installed that would convert the auto ZF unit into a manual only mode and it had buttons on the back of the steering wheels. You had to shift yourself at that point and it wouldn't change by itself. Not a bad idea I guess but it would be nice to keep the auto mode if wanted.

If the road was closed why were you going so slow?

I'd quickly tire of the supercharger wine. I prefer the NA V8.

Isle of Man isn't in the UK! It's a British isle with own currency and government.
