Her Grammys performance of this song was one of my favorite live performances ever!
I was in tears.
It was outstanding!! The performance deserves a GRAMMY
Best Grammy performance ever
I cry every single time I watch it. Never loses its impact.
This one is very controlled compared to the Grammy performance. czcams.com/video/KJqL1yIm9e0/video.html
Brandi's voice crack during her song "The Story" is my favorite goosebump moment in the history of music.
This is what a true singing voice sounds like, sans auto tune. I'd like to add a bit to the Dave Cobb story in relation to Brandi writing this song, she talks about it in her memoir "Broken Horses." At one point during the Elvis conversation Dave Cobb basically confronted her that she hadn't written anything vocally challenging since "The Story" and that kinda pissed Brandi off. That night in bed Catherine, her wife, asked her if she was really honest with herself wouldn't she agree? The next morning she woke up on a mission. It was a Sunday morning and the only person she could find was Josh, their cellist. She told him to come on that they were going to the studio. When they got there she told Josh to go sit down and play four chords over and over on his cello. Within 30 minutes she had the bones of the song knocked out and then called Dave Cobb and the twins to the studio where the finishing touches were put to it to polish it off. It's amazing what a little push can lead to when a very talented individual takes up the challenge. Thanks for your analyses of Brandi's vocals. All the things you spoke, to from her vibrato to her perfect imperfections is what makes her such a compelling vocalist. In my humble opinion that is. I am not musically inclined and have no talent what so ever musically. I've just been listening to the greatest musical talents of the last half of the 20th century into the first couple of decades of the 21st and I know a great voice when I hear it.
I need to finally read her book. I can hear her in my head calling up Josh and being like, "Josh, get your ass over here. We're writing some good shit today!"
@@lorynpierceeastabrook5177 While I'm sure Brandi's memoir is a good read, I recommend the audio version. It is read by Brandi herself, therefore one hears the emotions in her voice as she retells each story. You will not be disappointed I promise.
I'm a musician and singer and you're right.
How does she not talk about Brandi's range!?!? It amazing.
No matter what version I hear from her, I cry.
She is incredible. Even her imperfections are perfect. Her voice and delivery reminds me of K.D. Lang. It would be great if they collaborated at some point.
You’re right right. There are some similarities in their tone as well as the vocal brakes they have in their voices. What a great comparison!
I don’t see it. KD has such a clear voice with perfect pitch and outstanding range. As much as I enjoy Brandi’s voice they aren’t even remotely on the same level.
I am surprised they haven’t collaborated yet.
@@gordonschiff3621 - I see it. They are on the same level. I’ve seen both live.
Yes.
I just turned 71 last week and have been immersed in every kind of great music for 60 years, but I never heard Brandi Carlile until a few days ago. This is, as the kids say, next level or actually, the next level from the next level. I'm not sure if I've ever been as moved by a song and performance as I am by this and I can't stop listening to every performance I can find on the internet. But dammit Ms. Carlile, I'm retired on a fixed income, and I can't afford all these Kleenex if I am unable to find a way out of this fresh addiction.
Check out "Tragedy" by her.
Amen! I’m 61 and I’m not religious but Jesus she’s like ethereal. Her Grammys performance was fantastic. I read that she felt so nervous she had to focus on one person in that audience-and that happened to be Janelle Monet, who is such a wonderful presence and talented in her own right. And the rest is history-just knocked it out of the park! Enjoy kind sir-as I cry again!
I generally listen to music from before the 2000s, but every now and then I discover gems like The Joke and singers like Brandi Carlile and I berate myself for limiting myself, since I'm just 36 right now, haha.
Every time I hear this song I try to separate myself from the words and just appreciate the music, but it just brings me to tears every time. She's is just so powerful with her words, inflections, and technique. Amazing!
First time I have heard this singer, and will admit I am more than a little blown away. One thing that jumped out to me was that some of the nuances in her vocals reminded me of Chrissy Hynde....who I adore!
Brandi is WONDERFUL!!! So much depth and character to her voice!!!
She's adored by people ranging from Dave Grohl, to Pink, to Elton John and Dolly. She's going to be around a long time.
If you like this song you should give The Story a listen to. I think you’ll love it
The Twins stay in the background but are such a part of her musical journey. They are a real family.
Brandi Carlile... I knew the first time I heard her that she is going to be a living legend... before the grammy fame, I saw her in a concert live many years ago in Santa Rosa, CA. I tell you.. she did an acepella and her voice filled the entire auditorium. I love the emotions she put in her songs. Amazing amazing singer and songwriter. Definitely one of the greatest.
I had the pleasure of seeing her live in London some 11 years ago, she killed it, the twins werent there, it was just her and a piano, that night she did a cover of 'Forever Young' by Alphaville, best rendition ever. Btw, I managed to take a picture with her, yaaaaay
Loved this, thanks. Brandi is one of the greats of all time. Amazing human and performer.
She is a remarkable artist who is finally getting her due!
Love Brandi, she is so great. You know how good she is just based on her much her piers respect her and how much the people she idolised as a kid have come to love her (she guested at Eltons last US show and she was primarily responsible for getting Joni Mitchell back on stage after a decade plus gap).
Excellent review of the most profound artist ever imo love her
Love that you reacted to her! I'd been sleeping on her for a shamefully long time but now that I've discovered her I'm obsessed! 💕
Thank you Amy! She is has an amazing voice and her song writing is also fantastic!
Brandi is amazing
I adore her performance of this on the Grammy Award the best. Such exuberance.
If you liked this version of “The Joke”, listen to her, perform it at the Grammys last year, 2022. The end was a little different and she blew everybody away.
Thank you thank you thank you! This song makes me cry every time, so much
Thanks for watching Anne!
Just had a bunch of things with this lady show up on my CZcams, like most others here I’m reminded of KD Lang, Carol King, Chrissy Hynde, Joni Mitchell….❤
What she does holding the note through the change in chord reminds me of Thom Yorke's vocals toward the end of "Creep.
"
She covers Creep often in concert. CZcams it.
wow, you analyse it so well... makes so much sense. Thank you
Beautiful, beautiful song!!!!
Brandi uses her voice so expertly to wring out every bit of emotion from her brilliant songs. No technician with digital pitch "correction" could touch this with a ten-foot pole without utterly ruining it. Keep on keeping it human, Brandi!
I cry every time I hear this song. The lyrics are so moving and how she sings is other worldly yet Americana
I saw Brandi open for Lucinda Williams a long time ago, probably over 20 years now. It was immediately apparent that she was the real deal. So glad that she is finally getting the recognition she deserves! ✌
That's amazing! It's always great to hear from people who have seen an artist live and can attest to their talent. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Am I the only one who hears a lot of Chrissie Hynde in Brandi's voice? Great reaction, Beth!
Such a beautiful song, beautiful voice, beautiful music, and beautiful instrumentation! Very very well done ❤
It gives me goosebumps!
In love with her voice instantaneously since i first heard this song in a movie...
I recently discovered Brandi, she's amazing! Thanks for reacting to this, Beth. I love your videos.
Dolores
This popped up seemingly randomly and I’m so glad I watched. Goosebumps. ❤ (Edit, I have never heard of this singer until ten minutes ago.)
Brandi is in our outlaw country family of artists
wonderful breakdown of a masterpiece. Liked and subscribed, as instructed.
Fantastic! I love this song, I love everything about brandi... it's just amazing!!!
Wow! Lovely song! Thank you Beth for this surprise :)
My pleasure!
Well goddang Beth, I’ve been watching you for years and this might be my favorite analysis of yours. Well done 👍
Wow! Thank you!
One of my most favourite songs. Incredible singing & so emotional. Those high notes are totally amazing! ❤️
I love Brandi Carlile..💕🎶🎶🎶
I love this song, thank you so much.
Thanks for watching Jonathan!
What a powerful artist! It makes total sense why Maura Healey brought her in to celebrate her gubernatorial inauguration!
Goosebumps ...
This song is beautiful and her voice is magical. 😎
American Trilogy is my favorite Elvis song. This is AMAZING!!!
I love when non pop diva singers like her have a big range and show it off.
She is simply my favorite and has been for a very long time. BTW, Mickey Newbury wrote "An American Trilogy", he sang it first, then Elvis. Great job, Beth.🙂
Oh. An emotional record, for sure!
Saw Brandi in 2019 at the Greek, Berkeley soon after this release. Told stories of hanging with Joni, her new friend, that weekend and personal significance of being in SF area. Not a dry eye in the house!
Her song "Sugartooth" breaks my heart.
Yup great class! Also love "The Story".
Wonderful song sang by a fantastic talented lady.👍👍🇨🇦
Brilliant interpretation
you articulate exactly what I sense of Brandi's unique talent. spot on in your analysis. thank you.
Thank you Patrick! I've just released my own song Power Of The Wolf. I'd love if you could check it out! czcams.com/video/bpQC6NWx9Vk/video.html

Beth Roars. Please, do a reaction to, Hi Ren, by the artist Ren. He’s a genius. I think you might enjoy it very much. Cheers.
I love love love Brandi Carlile. Her "wobbly vibrato" as you call it is something I adore - The great Emmylou Harris also has that!
One of the best songs I've heard in my 67 years.
I have tickets to see her at Red Rocks Amphitheater in September. Can not wait!
You should do the Indigo Girls. so much of what Brandi does started with them.
The Indigo Girls are one of my very favorite artists. I rank them up there with some of the greats like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc. I first saw Brandi when she opened the show for the Indigo Girls years ago. I have loved Brandi ever since. What a beautiful talent!
I just listened to Rick Beato's interview with Emily. Was great. She mentioned Brandi invited her to a music salon at Joan Mitchell's house and Emily met her song-writing idol. Was a great interview about the Indigo Girls and just in general, Emily was awesome.
Autocorrect got me. Joni obviously.
She can sing anything. Listen to The HighWomen The Chain cover. Incredible.
"Can we listen to that again?" YES. A THOUSAND TIMES YES.
Ive never heard this song before. Everything about it is beautiful!
I love this song!
@@BethRoars I do too now 😂
You should react to Broken Horses. The way she uses her voice on that song is truly amazing.
I love her song “The Eye”. It’s a fantastic three part harmony with the twins.
I haven’t come across Brandi before and love it for all the reasons you state, Beth. Very reminiscent of Maria McKee, who you should do a reaction to. Something from the High Dive album - my favourite album of all time.
Or Maria McKee's stripped down version of 'Show Me Heaven' live on Scottish TeeVee, accompanied by an organ, as raw and vulnerable as it gets. czcams.com/video/KGzH0wZ3QP8/video.htmlfeature=shared
Beth, I love you detailed reviews focusing on the vocal performance and technical skills. I have a recommendation to do comparison videos of the same songs by different artists and styles. A great example is how Brandi Carlile had Tanya Tucker remake Miranda Lambert's song The House That Built Me. Two very different versions and vocals. Another great comparison is Cher's Believe done by Adam Lambert at The Kennedy Center Honors in front of Cher. Totally different version. Would love to here your technical reviews.
Nothing like a little sip of Brandi!
Watching her pour her guts out on the Grammy's was just gratifying, reckless, feverish, raging - EVERY emotion all in a 4 minute song. What music should be. EVERY ONE was on their feet.
Thanks!
Thank youuu Jack
@@BethRoars You are welcome. Very helpful to those of us with limited musical talent to understand the technical aspects of singing. I also offered a suggestion below for future reactions. Thought it would be a new idea.
Brandi's live version of Hard Rain's Gonna Fall is amazing. Highly recommended.
Have you also heard the version by Benicio Bryant from AGT? He has also been on stage with Brandi. Amazing.
Brandi wrote this song with Tim & Phil Hanseroth; and Dave Cobb, not alone.
She wrote about the song in her autobiography. She called her cellist, met him in the studio, had him play the same four chords over and over and had the framework of the song done. Then called in the twins, etc., and finished it up.
Ô Beth! Pede pra colocar legenda em todos os vídeos 🙏
You know it's good when you find yourself not breathing when you listen.
greatness! check out her version of Elton Johns Madman Across The Water! she can do no wrong musically!
Y'all should also check out Joshua Ray Walker, I love Voices
How can I persuade you to react to some Vince Gill? He’s on my Mt. Rushmore for singers, along with Brandi Carlile, and I’m very curious to hear what you think about his technique.
Turpentine and the story are two more excellent songs from her
Beth...I love your reaction. Brandy definitely can being it. Now please react to Mary J Blige's cover of U.2's cover of "One" with U.2's accompanyment. She beings the thunder and lightening. I'd love to just watch you face during said reaction. It should move you as much as Brandy's the "Joke".
There are less than a handful of songs that elicit instant tears Pavlov’s dog-style, but this is one of them.
To the Bullies of my childhood.......The joke is on them.
2:35. The face I make when I start to comprehend Brandi’s lyrics.
Brandi hangs out with Joni Mitchell, I knew this would be good.
ჰამლეტ გონაშვილი - ვერხვის ფოთოლთა

Could you react this please, this is golden voice of Georgia.
Would you like to review the Indian metal folk band Bloodywood?
Nice reaction. I love Brandi Carlile. But I thought I might suggest a Cover of this song to listen to, not react to. It was a young man on his AGT Audition. Search for: "Benicio Bryant - The Joke".
Would you react to some solo work from Marie Frederickson (from Roxette)? English or Swedish.
y que opinas de la verisón de adam lambert?
Echoes of K.D.Lang.
Just beth
Hii! Please, react to ''Você me vira a cabeça (me tira do sério) - Alcione - Ao vivo 2''!!
In addition to her stunning performance of this song, Brandie was gracious enough to perform it again with a young man who managed to do it justice on America's Got Talant. I could see why she was so impressed by his rendition of her masterpiece. czcams.com/video/_vncD2ApUJg/video.html&ab_channel=BreakingTalentsShowcase
Pleeease react to ''Pentangle - Willy O Winsbury (Set Of Six ITV, 27.06.1972)''
And an astrophysicist to boot. Where do you find the time?
I remember seeing her live in my home town Boston in Copley Square in 2007 with her voice bouncing off the Hancock and just jaw dropping. Fyi please don't move here cuz of this compliment, we've had it with gentrification..no offense.
Reacts to Milton Nascimento the greatest singer in Latin America. he has already left the stage now in his 80s. Please you need to check your songs, check the lyrics. 🇧🇷❤️
What about Amy McDonald?
sometimes you can't analyze. she is just really good
Please do mad man across the water Elton John cover.. it's one of the best covers ever please please please
