Every day I search for new reactions to Voiceplay, and it's especially fun to find someone who has never seen them or heard them before. Your reaction was terrific! I enjoy your enthusiastic giggles as well as your detailed analysis.
Although this piece is a favorite, it is not the best way to get the full effect. Obviously, it was arranged to showcase Geoff Castellucci, the bass, because of the nature of the song. Voiceplay usually gives all of their members a chance to "solo" in each production.
Geoff and the beatboxer, Layne Steine do almost all of the arrangements. They produce one each month, taking turns. Whichever of them does the arrangement also does the production, set, direction, plans the costume and makeup. They have outside camera and makeup artists when necessary, depending on the complexity of the production.
Two of the men here are no longer with Voiceplay. The bearded tenor left for personal reasons in 2020, and the black baritone left last year to join and sing with the US Navy. They currently have 4 permanent members. Eli (pronounced ellie) Jacobson, the bald tenor and Cesar de la Rosa, baritone/tenor joined last year. They use featured artists to fill out the production.
Next watch Hoist the Colours, from Pirates of the Caribbean 3, it has been blowing the minds of reactors for months. Trust me.

@@glennolson6505 While I don't doubt that the baritone range is the 'center' of his comfort zone as a singer, the fact remains that his vocal apparatus is that of a bass. He's simply worked it well enough to push up into higher registers with skill. You can hear that he's not a baritone any time he talks - the tone and resting pitch level of his voice are 100% bass. Contrast that with Tomi P, who can hit many of the same low notes Geoff does - but Tomi's speaking voice is one of a baritone, not a bass.

Welcome to Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci (he’s the bass). These are some wonderful rabbit holes. Oogie Boogie is kind of the gateway drug for a lot of people-there’s so much more they can do. I highly recommend If I Were a Rich Man/Girl, My Mother Told Me, Hoist the Colours, and their most recent release, Enemy. They often have featured guests, so you’ll get to hear a lot of pretty fantastic singers along with this group, and you’ll also see a few personnel changes that happened over the past couple years. Anyway, I’d love it if you’d do more with these guys. Given how much you love Dimash, I think you’ll really appreciate all these guys, though I would NOT compare them. Dimash is a very different kind of singer and honestly, he’s not human, so it wouldn’t be fair. But every member of Voiceplay is extraordinary. On Geoff’s solo channel, definitely check out 16 Tons and his latest, Ain’t No Sunshine, though there’s some pretty wonderful bassy awesomeness no matter what you pick. He also does narration, so there are several readings from POE and other writers that are terrific.
It’d be interesting if you’d also think about how their overall work has changed since Oogie Boogie. A lot of us have been noticing that they’re really upping their game, and have been since quarantine. I’d almost bet that when the shutdown was happening these guys sat down and realized it might be awhile before they could tour again, and made a decision to really invest in every aspect of making videos. Check out the credits in the description as you go along as well. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes, and a lot of skill to be seen there as well.
Happy hunting! Thanks again for doing this. More, please!

I'm a HUGE VoicePlay fan. A lot of their videos are full musical theater (including costumes ad sets) with amazing arrangements. Some of the ones that stand out are: Wicked Medley, We Don't Talk About Bruno, If I Were a Rich Man/Girl (from Fiddler on the Roof), My Mother Told me, The Little Mermaid - MEDLEY, MOANA MEDLEY

That was an entertaining reaction and informative analysis -- everything I'm looking for in a reaction video. Thank you!
Pentatonix is the student council, VoicePlay are the theater geeks, and Home Free are out in the parking lot hosting a tailgate party. Their fans -- VoicePlayers and Home Fries -- will flock to your channel if you react to more of their songs, and all of their songs are good.
If you want to keep laughing, watch VP's We Don't Talk About Bruno or The Little Mermaid Medley, both arranged by Layne the beatboxer. Geoff as Ursula in purple makeup is a must-see ... and hear.
For the more dramatic, try Dream On, Dragonborn Comes, and Hoist the Colors, all of which were arranged by Geoff. Layne pushed Geoff's limits in Oogie Boogie, requiring his highest and lowest notes (at the time; he's since got down to B0). Geoff and Layne have been singing together since they were about 12. They've performed Oogie Boogie live and Geoff has done the last bit in one of his tutorial vids, so that sound does indeed come from him, not editing magic. Very few reactors have paid attention to the descending riff by J. None (skeleton shirt) when Oogie says he's going to do the best he can -- good catch, as it is lovely.
Santa is played by the brother of Geoff's wife. He's a professional magician and has a lovely stage voice.
Do check out Geoff Castellucci's solo channel -- Ain't No Sunshine is breathtaking, and Monster Mash made me a fan just 90 seconds in. Geoff's wife Kathy has a cameo. The videos with the most views by far are 16 Tons and Misty Mountains, and he's sleeveless in both. Hmm. 😊

That was a great reaction! Voiceplay is so under rated... I love when a larger platform finds them and is as amazed as I am!. This song was a while ago...they just keep getting better with every video! As some have probably already mentioned... Geoff Castelluci the base/lead singer in this one has his own channel where he talks about subharmonics and there are videos of them doing this song live... so even with the studio magic on the last note... even live it is amazing! Anything you pick from VoicePlay or Geoff's solo channel will give you new things to be amazed by each time!

Your reaction was one of the most honest, non-self-conscious reactions I’ve seen. I think I’ve watched just about every reaction video to this, and I actually learned a few new things from you. You are only the second reactor who caught that little descending harmonic riff, and the other reactor had listened to it several times before but was choosing not to react but to analyze. So he was not watching (and being distracted by) the video and that’s how he caught it. So very well done. You have a slightly different approach than some of the others and it made a lot more sense to me as a person without musical training. So thank you for that!
Your absolute delight was a delight to all of us who love VoicePlay. They are incredible and this is an old video. They’ve gotten better.
You might want to check Geoff’s personal channel. He has a few tutorials on how to sing in subharmonics and how to sing very low. He considers himself a baritone, and actually wanted to be a tenor and tried his best while he was younger. His voice has deepened with age (as he constantly laments). So now it’s more of a baritone bass speaking voice. Plus he uses that voice all the time. His wife remarks that she always knows exactly where he is because he is constantly singing.
I wish he would do some readings that weren’t quite so spooky. But he does some readings of Edgar Allan Poe and the Jabberwocky and has an incredible voice. He could read the phonebook and I would listen to it.
You might also want to check out David Larson. That is who Geoff credits with teaching him subharmonics. Recently I went to his (David’s )channel and found about a 30 minute course on subharmonics. No musical training here but most of it made sense to me and I found it fascinating.
I had to look for it but I found a copy of them doing Oogie boogie live a few years ago. The quality is not great because it was taken from my cell phone but here it is.
    czcams.com/video/_HwUxb-DDw4/video.html&feature=share
Fun fact. The man playing Santa Claus is Jeff’s brother-in-law, but it was voiced by Eli (pronounced Ellie) who was the man in red with the Rasal Nesonance. 😉
In their Little Mermaid medley (which is one of my favorites) Geoff is cast as Ursula the sea witch (The beat boxer arranged that one and got to choose who did ehich parts, LOL). I don’t have musical training but it has been reported that he went from a D4 to a D1 in one word. You might want to check it out.
As others will, I’m subscribing in hopes that you’ll cover more VoicePlay and also Geoff’s personal channel. I do enjoy the other groups but these guys look like they have so much fun. They are short one member and have been using featured artists a great deal in the last two years. They’ve also done that in the past when they were in transition. So you will see some people that they don’t usually sing with and they’re always listed at the featured artist. If you watch the cover of “Just Sing@, be sure to put the captions on. That will tell you the names of the the many collaborators that they were able to contact for this production.

So excited to see you checking VoicePlay. I only caught the end of the premier, so will go back and listen again from the beginning. Oogie Boogie was arranged by the beatbox, Layne Stein. Geoff has one of the most astonishing drops I've ever heard in his cover of Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshine" (Geoff Castellucci, his personal channel). I would so love to see you respond to it. It's at 1:30, but you'll know when it hits! In VP's latest, Enemies, Geoff covers from an A0 to D5! And the whole performance is wonderful. But if it's pure fun you want, check their take on We Don't Talk About Bruno. Guarantee it will make you laugh - it's another of Layne's and he'll squeeze out laughs anywhere. (Normally there isn't a lead, each is amazingly talented, and they try to give roughly equal time to each.) They're based in Orlando, all have worked for Disney or Universal. Geoff hasn't had any formal vocal training, just worked hard since he was a kid trying to 'make it sound good,' routinely doing 70-75 recordings before heading to an audition. Yep, I'm totally geeked out on them, just as I am on Dimash and Dirty Loops. Talent plus hard work rules.

I was excited to see this reaction! Voice Play is amazing. Geoff is a beast with a crazy range. He and Tim Foust are very similar. They can both go super low but can also sing in a tenor range without strain or having to leverage their head voice. Your analysis, as usual, was just so outstanding. You are so knowledgeable and I learn something new every time I watch you. And you crack me up. :-) Which is great! Your demonstration/explanation of twang vs. nasal resonance was very cool and informative. As far as Voice Play, I would recommend their QUEEN A Cappella Medley or their Tennessee Whiskey. Voiceplay is my favorite a cappella group. They are so inventive, have incredible arrangements, and always get into character with appropriate staging, lighting, costumes, so much more effort than the other groups, plus they have been around the longest. You might get confused at first because depending on which year a performance was videoed they have gone through a few member changes, but don’t worry, your fans (me) will always be there for you.
