I will never get tired of watching vocal coaches and singer/songwriters react to Geoff's insanity.
Watching singer/vocal coachs react to Geoff is my hobby now😂😂😂
The only problem is when every single one of them pulls out their piano and spends 15 minutes trying to figure it out, it’s so boring
That's why I'm here. 😀😆
"Julia being weird" is the main reason I'm here.
Also, the elf-Julia outfit is on point
Sure, when she starts making all those funny voices, wearing that elf dress, she's super funny :)
Not sure if Julia has a significant other, but if so, I hope they..um.."enjoyed" the costume as well. Anyway....
@@primemover1416 not weird at all, man.
The Elf-outfit is on point? Haha. Is that an eufemism for 'Julia is hot'? Then say so man. I agree! Doesn't matter what outfit. She's just one very attractive lady.
It's obviously Juli-alf
‘I am deceased’ 😂😂
That’s everyone’s reaction when hearing the angel that is Geoff Castelluci
'I am pregnant' also works
@@lonelybrat9256 So true. The first time I heard that I instantly went to my husband (who is clearly a bass, although he's untrained) and just told him he had to learn how to do that. For… reasons 😏 He actually did, since Geoff has a how-to video, and daaaaaamn, am I glad he did. My life has improved significantly just from hearing subharmonics live every now and then. It's like ASMR mixed with getting unbelievably horny and 10/10, totally recommend 🤣
@@lonelybrat9256 I'm a man who likes women but Geoff's voice makes me pregnant every time. ^o^
and if you haven't yet, Geoffs Headless Horseman is also fun
Definitely this! A must!
Yes!! Such a good song!!!
Right?! His deep notes are amazing!
The whole thing is a dream
Thanks for the recommendation. It IS a must.
Not being a native English speaker, I tend to watch videos with captions in case I'd miss words or something, and I have to point out that Geoff's speech is so perfectly clear that even auto-generated captions get his singing better than it does for some people who are simply speaking, and I think it's amazing how he manages to articulate his words in such a neat, flawless way.
At first I thought he makes those subtitles 😂
Voiceplay makes the subtitles
Julia , you betta know that "you're a mean one Mr Grinch" is more than this , with Geoff's going to be inhuman ! Waiting for this now...
you're a mean one mister grinch by small town titans.
@@900schutter Agreed , i've also suggest it to Juilia !!
the headless horseman song to
YES PLEASE!!!
@@900schutterIf i get a bit of her musical taste , i can affirm she will fall in love with that voice ! Guaranteed 100%
The beat boxer is also the person that creates the arrangements, Layne is his name I believe...
No, Geoff does most of the arranging for the group. See czcams.com/video/lpdIwOnjndg/video.html
You’re both right - they kinda take it in turns. Layne and Eli arranged “Queen in 5 Minutes,” but Geoff arranged “Boy Bands in 5 Minutes.” (I think Geoff does the majority of them, but I’m not 100% sure.)
Layne created the arrangement for Oogie Boogie.
Geoff has done some arrangements for Home Free too...
It’s actually Geoff who makes the arrangements. You probably got confused with Home Free with their beat boxer arranging most of their covers
To hear them with "normal" voices you should watch Queen for 5 minutes or The Little Mermaid Medly or Moana Medly
Or my first introduction to VoicePlay, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”!
They do mostly have normal voices in the queen video, but Geoff out of nowhere has the most insane display of his range I've seen. It's my favorite performance of Geoff's.
The Little Mermaid Medly is amazing or also the Wicked one
Santa's not part of the group. He's actually Geoff's (the bass) brother in law, more than likely just doing it for fun.
He sings pretty good too
The barotone is actually geoff stepping back and accompanying the others.
Finally some VoicePlay for Julia. A dose of Geoff's voice will give you that look for sure lol
Julia, at 3:53 demonstrates 4-5 beautifully different voices in less than 8 seconds....OMG...talent!!
She's fucking nuts... if ever she gets bored of singing, she could kill it as an actress...
As Oogie -Boogie, and company turn away laughing, they look up to find Krampus standing there, a full quiver of Birch rods at the ready... Oogie sadness followed quickly..... Santa has Back-up..
Watching Julia get excited about that first low note makes me grin... oh just wait for the last one ♥
Oh, same!!
weird to think about that Geoff is naturally a baritone, but after MANY years of hard work he's increased his range to bass and tenor as well, and can even go basso profondo and subharmonic when need be. despite him having a natural baritone range, he's achieved a very good sounding bass and tenor range without it sounding too forced. lot of hard work behind that voice!
Geoff has continued to work on his bass and the effect is really impressive. Subharmonics are now almost effortless. It’s a wonderful thing! 👹
As far as I'm aware, the bass actually classes himself as a baritone with a bass range, jnone (the one who said your finished) is a baritone, Earl (the highest) is a definite tenor, as is eli the other one who is a lower tenor but still massive upper range. Also there are normally five but Earl left, and that last note was achieved through a subharmonic note, done by producing a pitch a fifth above your fundamental pitch with vocal fry combined with the fundamental producing the illusion of a note an octave lower, meaning his fundamental was an E2. Geoff (the bass) explains it better but that's the general gist, as does David larson. Hope this helps :)
Yeah, Geoff considers himself a baritone, but acts as the bass for the group.
I also read somewhere that Eli takes over the baseline when Geoff sings a lead part. Even though Eli is a tenor he can go very low. They all have an amazing range :D
That wasn’t an E2 with the “illusion” of an E1, that WAS an E1! I don’t understand very well how subharmonics are produced, and I’m sure it does involve jumping an octave down from a starting note, but I heard that E1 frequency (~41 Hz) loud and clear!
@@AllHailZeppelin You are right :) It's a technique where you produce a note (E2 in this case) and the false chords start vibrating an octave lower alongside it. I believe if you perfect it (like Geoff) you can use just your false chords to produce that note.
@@AllHailZeppelin Not exactly. I'm not completely sure what he's actually doing for the E1 here, but the simple subharmonic technique for an E1 would be to sing E2 and B2 together. Ear hears the two tones together, brain parses them as overtones, brain hallucinates the missing fundamental frequency for the E1 that it's hearing.
We can't actually hear the difference, but I have friends who use spectral analysis to figure it out.
Geoff's cover of Blackbird is all him layered as a 5 part harmony absolutely awesome
Awesome... LOL! I can finally stop suggesting that she do this one.
I don't know you, but thank you! I absolutely love this song and the way it is in their video
Jeff made a solo cover "Blackbird" Beatles in this one you can appreciate his range. Merry Christmas and stay safe
Geoff. His name is Geoff.
All are good suggestions but I think black bird is the most moving cover he's done.
Seriously, Blackbird is... inhuman. Geoff's range has to be heard to be believed.
@@allenhester5476 hahahah, this made me LOL
His Blackbird is just beautiful. So, relaxing. So astonishing. Pure mastery.
If you really want to hear Geoff’s range listen to his cover of the Beatles blackbird it is awesome ! Merry Christmas and be safe😘 💚❤️💚❤️🎁🎁
Incidentally, while he expresses his upper and mid range a lot more in Blackbird, I believe the boundaries are the same. E1 to B4.
As a few people have noted, Geoff can sing the upper baritone range because he actually is a baritone - he just has a very rich voice and a great low extension.
That's still not enough to get him down to E1 in modal voice though - his last two notes are using subharmonics, which he's really good at. Details get complex, but basically he sings a couple of higher notes together and makes us hallucinate a lower note that isn't actually there. For instance if you hear a clean E2 and B2 that are well tuned to each other, then your brain will hear them as overtones and will hallucinate the missing fundamental E1.
I have discovered the rabbit hole that is people's first reactions to Voiceplay/Geoff and it does NOT disappoint! Great commentary!
Also, if you want to look at something featuring each of the musicians, Valhalla Calling is INCREDIBLE!!
Queen in 5 Minutes. Geoff hits the highest note I have ever heard from a bass singer. It blew me away a bit more than his high note here
Not to mention the fact that he's absolutely gorgeous and his aesthetic totally matches his voice so well
Geoff also beatboxes in their versions of Death of a Bachelor and Love Yourself!!! Geoff's Blackbird, VoicePlay's Can't Help Falling In Love and True Colors are absolutely magical!!!
I love how every one of the react videos on this has the same progression.
That first low, there is a pause and wait... what note was that?
Then that final descent, the growing disbelief and then just... as so appropriately labeled... deceased.
Welcome to Voiceplay!
The members of the group -- in this video at least -- are Earl Elkins -- he's the gentleman in the gray shirt with the beard. He's a high tenor, and unfortunately is no longer with the group. Eli Jacobson -- he's the gentleman in the red longjohns. He's also a tenor. Jesse "J" None -- he's the gentleman in the black jacket. He's a baritone is capable of hitting ridiculously high notes when he wants to. Layne Stein -- he's the beatboxer, but when allowed to sing -- which happens often enough -- is a baritone. He's also their primary arranger (and arranged this song). And finally, there's Geoff Castallucci, their basso profundo. He is, perhaps, the lowest voice in music right now. (Tim Faust of Home Free and Avi Kaplan, formerly of Pentatonix come close, but Geoff can go below both of them.)
If you want to see them stretch their legs as a group normally, try their video "Boy Bands in Five Minutes", or one of their collaborations with Rachel Potter (the Moana Medley and the Little Mermaid Medley especially).
Geoff isn't a basso profondo. I would say, he's a basso cantante with ridiculous low and high extensions. Geoff himself even said, that he's a bass-baritone... But, as we hear, he doesn't sound like a bass-baritone "naturally". He can go really high in chest (up to A4, maybe even higher) and even sing ± comfortably in bass-baritones tessitura, but he's "natural voice" sounds like a bass, but certainly not a basso profondo
@@dmytrotsvyntarnyi799 He fits the description, so that's what I call him.
@@GrumpyOldGuyPlaysGames he doesn't, according to what we know. Basso profondo needs to have an A1 in their tessitura, not just be able to reach it. Tessitura, to simply, is workable range for academic singing which would be noticeable over an entire choir without microphone. Actually Geoff may be a basso profondo, but we will never know until he starts singing in academic manner
@@dmytrotsvyntarnyi799 Your utterly insulting condescension notwithstanding, I stand by my description.
You can sit down and shut up now because no one gives a shit about your pedantry.
Also check out Geoff Castellucci doing “Mele Kalikimaka” with the American Sirens!
There new one called "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" is fantastic
This should be "Their new one." "Their" is the possessive. "There" is a location. You're welcome. You're right about the Grinch song.
You should check out your a mean one mr grinch by them before the season is over
Literally the first reaction I've seen that noticed the descending baseline and acknowledge it at 3:23. Nobody else has acknowledged this. You are also one of the few who noticed the neck snap timing at 5:41.
@tmaze50 literal neck snap
For context: that last note, E1, is the LOWEST NOTE ON A BASS GUITAR (in standard tuning)
I found your comment about the arpeggios being like the plucking of a violin to be very interesting because this song was arranged by Layne Stein - the group's beatboxer - and he is in fact a violinist. :) You can hear him play on VoicePlay's cover of "Warriors". Great catch!
Whoa! No way! It really did sound like pizzicato to me so that's so cool to know he arranges and plays the violin. Might all be a mighty coincidence ;)
The bass of the group has his own channel and he has a song from "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" called "The Headless Horseman" bass cover and it shows his complete range cause he is the only one singing in tenner and (as him and Tim Foust calls it) sub-harmonic bass
I suggest to you Geoff's solo (4 part but still...) number "The headless horseman"
The tangent you went on at 8:19 about the lack of baritone is exactly what I've picked on about this group for years.
They can do some incredible things with these top-heavy harmonies, but sometimes a baritone would be kind of nice to connect Geoff to the rest of the group.
I'm actually a fan of the huge differences between geoff and everyone else. It gives great contrast and really makes him stand out and gives them their sound. I'm more of a home free fan, but have gotten into voiceplays music lately and have really enjoyed it.
I super hope this is just the first of many times that you react to VoicePlay, Julia - their medleys and other covers are all *phenomenal* and I'm really excited to see your takes on 'em. I'm pretty sure there's not a bad song in their lineup, to be honest, so it's hard to pick just one to recommend :)
Warriors! It will blow you away.
Or Just Sing to raise your spirits.
As a tenor, I am jealous of Geoff’s high range!
They’re a 5 person group but Earl their tenor left the group a while ago so now it’s 4 Geoff is the bass J none is the baritone the guy all the way on the left Eli is Tenor 2 the bald guy in the red outfit,Earl is Tenor 1 the guy with the beard and Layne is a baritone and the beatboxer
Every one gangsta till geoff drop the bass
“You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch” by this group is so incredible. If you like the bass in this song it’s even crazier in that one! You should react to it!
You and Charismatic Voice are my favorite reactors. Been waiting for this one for a while!
On her reaction to this song CV equated that low note at the end as sounding similar to a burp.
@@primemover1416 and she was right. A very impressive burp. A nice belch, in fact.
@@davedammitt7691 Very nice belch, indeed. I luv CV. She listened to that low note about 6 times or so.
If I had a nickel for every red-headed voice coach reaction channel, I'd have four nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's still weird that there's four.
@@seanmsw5977 Julia, Beth, Elizabeth (CV), and...who is the fourth? Oh, crap, I can see her, but can't remember her name.
I love how they stay in character perfectly and hit EVERY shift perfectly... man. One day I'll get there.
100K? Saddle up, Julia. LOVE your physical reactions (jaw, dropped). I want other ‘reactors’ to see you.
Such a great song and reaction to it! The Santa was played by Pasquale Palazzolo who is Voiceplay's email marketing manager (not an actual singing member of the group) and is a relative of Geoff's through his wife Kathy (Pasquale's sister). Voiceplay singers are Geoff Castellucci (Bass), Earl Elkins Jr (Tenor 1), Eli Jacobson (Tenor 2), Layne Stein (Beat Boxing) and J. None (Baritone).
Welcome to the voiceplay fandom lol. They are honestly one of the most talented groups I’ve ever heard. Also, about geoffs range... his range is D1-A5
The most beautiful elf i've ever seen!
I'm a big believer in that talent is just the gift we get that sparks us as performers in the beginning and that the rest is a lot of hard work, but damn, Geoff!
I've watched so many reactions to this and you're the only one it seems that has noticed the neck crack that Layne did (or at least, the only one I've heard mention it).
Also your outfit is fantastic.
So glad you did this, I've been addicted to voice play since finding this song.
Amazing outfit. I m actually surprised you didn't do this one already! I am excited to see and hear this :D
elf-Julia has arrived...
@@jvoxfox t’is a momentous occasion!
@@jvoxfox, elf-Julia or Julielf?
@@jvoxfox hello Julia, just came across your page. Love the fun Julia!
I've seen a couple of Voice Play's videos. The Santa is not a member and they use video of him for their live performances. The did a cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believe;n" with the high school Camp A Cappella and their 300 +- high school kids. Its great and full of the energy only kids that age can bring. I saw it and shared it with a FB group that Steve Perry is one of the moderators on and everyone loved it. And yes Geoff's range is something like D1-D5. btw, did he do a clean 2 octave jump in this oogie boogie?
Keep up the good work and LOVE the red hair.
czcams.com/video/bqWCXYUa5mI/video.html&start_radio=1
btw, I use to sing in groups up to college. I was a bass. Not as low as Geoff BUT I did get a G1 a couple of times. once in HS I was standing next to the piano in practice and we were learning a 23-25 page MASS in Latin and there were a couple G1s in it but the director had us singing the note above (I don't remember the note) but I tried it G1 and it resonated the strings in the piano and the director stopped looked at the pianist and asked if he hit the note. I waved and said I did it.. but that ended in college after I became a fireman and sucked a little too much smoke at a fire.
On his own channel, Geoff has some readings, two Poe readings, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, and a Halloween one. As mentioned earlier he also goes more into the subharmonics and how it works, as well as some other covers he did on his own. Great reaction, and loved the outfit!
Speaking of Geoff's talking voice, you should check out his reading of "The Night Before Christmas".
Pretty much everyone I've ever seen reacting to Voiceplay, or Geoff Castellucci, has that same facial expression the first time they hear his depth. The subtitles on this video actually call his last note "subterranean".
Also, believe it or not, they LOST "The Sing-Off" to Home Free.
Yeah... Geoff's the man.
Merry Christmas, Julia!
OMG! CUTEST Christmas Elf EVER!!!
That outfit is amazing. Happy to see this song come up, been enjoying other people listen to it and all pick up on various details (and ofc the end). Excited to see your take!
Geoff's vocal range blows my mind!!!!! The best bass I have heard in decades.... For sure!
Ooh sounds like you've only just been introduced to VoicePlay you have a lot to catch up to and enjoy. You're going to enjoy this group. So much fun and literally in they're name "VoicePlay" They play around and have fun with they're voices.
Oh god, that get-up looks too good on you x.x
Geoff Castalucci is their bass’s name....You want to see more of his range, check out his own cover of the Beatles’ “BlackBird”, or even his “Headless Horseman” cover, keeping in mind, everything you hear is just him.
12 of the greatest days of my life! Thank you and great job! Merry Christmas!!!
If I'm not wrong, Geoff says he's actually a baritone and didn't begin singing bass until recently and still considers himself a baritone
He may claim that, but a baritone that can hit Db2 in a chest voice isn't a baritone, they're a bass. I'm a pretty standard baritone and G2 is my default low note; F2 on a good day. Geoff can claim to be a baritone all he wants, but he might as well claim to be a soprano. His tessitura is in the bass range.
@@chrisd7047 Can you tell me if im a bass?Im not that sure, but im asking,i can hit a D#2 in chest,i recently found out i could hit it,my range of comfort is from E2-E4,i can strain up to G#4,this is all in chest btw.
@@victorleebhagad352 I'd say you're a bass with a good range, though I suspect you're attempting to screw with me by asking the question.
But, taking the question at face value, I sang in choirs as a kid and teenager, and in a co-ed a capella madrigal group in high school. We had sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses doing standard 4-part harmonies in classical, romantic, and popular styles. For what it's worth, we performed as the back-up chorus for Andy Williams during one of his Christmas specials in front of 16,000 people, just so you don't think we were some average high school singers. We were actually good. Am I an expert? No, but I know a bass when I hear one.
The thing is, none of the basses in our madrigal group were actually basses; we were all baritones. The lowest note we had to hit in any of the pieces we sang was a G2. The standard bass range for operatic basses is E2-E4, which fits perfectly with what you say your range is. Very few parts in operas, historically, require notes lower than E2. So, yeah, by the standards of opera, you're a bass.
@@chrisd7047 Yeah, thought so,was searching for vids for voice classification, and when i tested myself, watched 2 of em,1 had 2/3 the the test of me bass, and the other 1/3 bari or tenor, then the other vid told me im a bass.My voice tone is kinda low,but its not as deep and rich like a bass, its more like a baritone kinda tone, when speaking natural,in the morning, relaxed, its between F2-F#2.My dad tells me to speak in a higher tone,to8 sound more friendly.Hahaha.....naw,i wouldnt screw you,im just seeking info and knowledge,im 15 btw.
Acapella you said??Thats Amazing man!
I didnt really pay attention to low notes, always trying to sing high notes in chest with poor technique, straining to sing tenor songs, could reach A4,but it'll sound like shit, like muffled. It was really foolish to strain, keep in mind,i did this while having hyperthyroid,it also for a fact prevents you from singing higher notes.Im almost fully recovered from thyroid.
3 days ago,i decided to decending sirens, trying to go as low as i can,i have been only singing about for 2 years, and i was only able to go down to F#2,but then after 3 days of trial for fun,i could go down to a solid E2 with resonance,D#2 is okay, but unstable and i cant hold it long, and then D2 and lower i break and vocal fry kicks in,as i told you,ive only started 3 days ago.I think ill try advancing to chesty-fry mix or subharmonics. And im gonna build my head voice, then learn mix to belt more safely.
What about you Chris, you a baritone? And i wanna know the comfortable range for baritones.
I decided to do decending sirens*
Oh this is gonna be good! Can’t wait.

Yes, finally some love to VoicePlay. I love the group because the sheer fun feelings they're giving in each of the song they're singing perfectly. Please do The Little Mermaid Medley by them, it's so much fun to watch and listen. Thanks for this reaction Julia. Cheers!!
According to Geoff Castellucci (the bass), he's actually a Baritone with a bass range
Yes, I understand that he credits Tim Foust, the bass for Home Free, with teaching him how to sing bass and hit those sub-harmonic notes.
@@theloneranger8725 he learnt the subharmonics from David Larson I believe, not Tim foust
I’m so excited you found Voiceplay!
Geoff considers himself a baritone with a bass range. He has a comfortable 4 octaves, and almost another octave depending on the day, including the addition of subharmonics and other technics.
Julia, you have to listen to Geoff's version of "Blackbird". It is incredible!
Julia, if you want more I would highly recommend their 'Moana Medley' that way you can also hear them in a more natural state
Little Mermaid Medley is amazing, you get to hear them all shine plus Rachel Potter sings with them on that one and she is also a treat to hear! Outside of that, Kidnap the Sandy Claws is great along with their newest one Mr. Grinch. Great review by the way, I always check out your channel when you review a capella groups.
