  • There has been so much advice and expertise given to me in regards to shining up the old, faded boat hull. The first expirement that I have decided upon is a product called Poli-Glow. We'll see how it works out!

    Great stuff. I've used it for 4-5 years now on my 24' Express Cruiser with great results. Once its initially all prepped and done, maintaining it is a quick 'wipe' of the boat with the Poli Glow each spring after it's been washed. Takes less than 30 min. You have to really clean heavily oxidized upper facing deck areas to get a nice reflective finish, but especially on my hull and at the bow where it is more protected from direct sun, it gives a new like shine to the hull. A very nice advantage, is if you get a scuff or so, you clean it with 1000-2000 grit wet/dry sand paper or the Poli Ox then use the Poli Prep then coats of Poli Gloves and it blends right in. There are no lines at all where you do touch up.

    The blue liquid is the wax stripper. It removes any wax or old polyglow. Melts it right off. Just spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes and hose it off. The powder is for the stubborn areas and stains that need more scrubbing. Both the blue liquid and the powder are acids,which is why they want you to wear gloves. The white liquid is the actual polyglow. It will take 5-7 coats to get it to really shine. It looks great and I think it is faster and easier than waxing. You are supposed to put on 1-3 coats a year to maintain the shine. If you use it and don't like it just use the blue liquid and it'll strip it off the hull. I've been using polyglow for 10 years or so since seeing it on Ship Shape TV.

    Pretty nice job. Could have done without watching you wash your boat but the example you highlighted was worth taking the time. Curious to see if it handled the winter. Thanks.

    After you put on the coats of clear you need to use meguiar's m 205. The poli glow is kind of like floor wax but a little harder so it needs to be covered .

      Thank you for that tip! I have moved away from Poly Glow but I will make a note of that for people that still use it!

      Poli Glo people recommend not using wax on the "clear coat"

    That looks very promising. I can't wait to see how it looks when you do the rest.

      Marty Main if you have a boat this bad, I would recommend using a 1000-1500-2000 wet sand process. That will get your gelcoat back to shining like you want it and no chemicals to deal with.

      +Richard Kennedy there was zero gel coat left on this old Skeeter, that's why I put on the PoliGlow.

      Pastoral Homestead Outdoors thanks for the reply.
      Respectfully, I do believe there is a large misconception of what "gelcoat" is. One thing it is not however is a clear coat over the metal flake. Gelcoat is a polymer that is infused with pigments. In the case of a bass boat, the pigment is the metal flake.
      Unless you have chipped the gelcoat below the outer surface of this layer, for example .5 mm I believe is the standard thickness, if so, no product can restore the shine.
      If you haven't already went through this long process with Poli-Glow, i would recommend you try a portion of the boat with the sanding technique. You can do an entire upper portion in about a day! Either way I hope you enjoy that beauty and catch a big bass!
      Kind regards,

      +Richard Kennedy Thank you so much for your polite reply, rarely is that the case with a disagreement. I will be honest with you, I am a newbie when it comes to boats and gelcoat and all of those things… So, I appreciate your insight! I have given this boat to my dad and I will let him know your opinion and he can decide what he wants to do. Again, thank you!!

    poliglow great first season you'll enjoy trying to get it off the next season because your boat will look worse than ever will not buff off you looking at sanding they supposedly make a remover but I don't know anybody that believes in the remover Breakout the sander next year!!

      I've came across those that have this product on it or the floor wax from Lowe's whatever that is big mistake I had no idea how you apply the product I just seen the horror that comes in the seasons to come this can take my normal price and easily double it there's literally nothing you can do to make it look better after the first season it becomes too hard to buff off and gives an appearance worse than the oxidation that made you buy this product hate being negative Nancy but it's all true

    The red on your boat looks exactly like the red on my dune buggy. After reading a few of these comments though I'm gonna research this a bit more.

    I was very interested in this and did a Google search because I wanted to know what is in Poli Glow and what would be a cheaper alternative that works, I found people using RedMax Pro step 3 sold by Lowe's. It is a floor polish, anyway they basically did the same thing you did. They cleaned surface with Bar Keepers Friend with a scotch brite pad, then used the Red Max on a damped micro fiber cloth wiped up to 4 coats just like you have shown. Anyway for poor boys like me this may help them if they didn't want spend $75-$80, the RedMax is like $14 (a GALLON!) and the Bar Keepers Friend is $2....thanks for the video! I will let you know how RedMax does I am going to do my 82' Wrangler.

      Bar Keepers Friend and ZEP floor polish is commonly used by RVers. I don't think RedMax is still available (or maybe just renamed by ZEP). Not certain how either will hold up below the waterline. For cleaning 'crud' built up below the waterline if the boat lives in the water, I've seen interesting videos about using Oxalic Acid to clean.

      I did the same. Was funny because the first time I ordered soon I opened the bottle and got In touch with the product I found out that the smell was the same when i used to work cleaning and restoring vinyl floors. So I went to Lowe's I tried different products and the one it's work really good and do the same work was a product made it by Zep and I have been using it since then, is way cheaper than the poly glow. I guess they fund that product work on fiber glass and just relabeled with the name poly glow . Smart people know how to make money😜😜

    I used the polyglow and after a year it has oxidized again. Since this is on my fiberglass roof on my motorhome what harm will happen if I leave it be? After all it can't rust, it's fiberglass.

  • @platinumhandymansolutions

    Good videos. Do you know how to get to bow where trolling motor is to tighten up bolts under the bow? I have same boat as you. Thanks.

    • @PastoralHomesteadOutdoors
      @PastoralHomesteadOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      SoCal Gear Guy It’s not easy… Without cutting holes in the boat, you have to rely on the electric panel in the front and reach all the way back with a wrench or ratchet. I opted to cut a hole in the front for a recess trolling motor and through that hole it is easy to access under the top cap. If you opt for the recessed trolling motor you do have to cut through a thick piece of fiberglass, but it doesn’t seem to affect the sturdiness of the casting deck.

    Thanks for making this video. My wife is really sensitive to chemical smells. Does the final product have much of a smell that you noticed? Thanks

    • @PastoralHomesteadOutdoors
      @PastoralHomesteadOutdoors  Před 7 lety +1

      There is an odor, but it is not overwhelming. I had a much more difficult time with the smell of the cleaner. Like I said, it's not terrible, but if she's really sensitive to it you might want to wait till she's not around to apply it. I do not remember the smell following me when I came in from working.

    Hey on your Skeeter boat. Did you sand it then do poly glow.. I think my boat is like that one. All clear coat is gone and only flake is exposed. Just wondering if I need to sand the flake I was going to respray gel coat clear over it. But not sure what to do to prep it

    • @PastoralHomesteadOutdoors
      @PastoralHomesteadOutdoors  Před 7 lety +1

      John Hood I did not sand it before I put poly glow on it. If I were you, I would not sand it before you put your clearcoat. Especially if the flake is already sticking out.

      Similar scenario paint was ancient on a 86 smoker raft very dry and coarse, did the wet sandpaper for my first time 1000. 1500, 2000 grit, results are it looks awesome
