I generally don't like these remasterings as Caruso's voice is often distorted, but this one is OK I think and more palatable for most listeners.

Santa Lucia is a traditional Neapolitan song. It was transcribed by Teodoro Cottrau (1827-1879) and published by the Cottrau firm, as a "barcarolla", at Naples in 1849. Cottrau translated it from Napuletano into Italian during the first stage of the Risorgimento, the first Neapolitan song to be given Italian lyrics. Its transcriber, who is very often credited as its composer, was the son of the French-born Italian composer and collector of songs Guillaume Louis Cottrau (1797-1847).
The Neapolitan lyrics of "Santa Lucia" celebrate the picturesque waterfront district, Borgo Santa Lucia, in the Bay of Naples, in the invitation of a boatman to take a turn in his boat, the better to enjoy the cool of the evening.

Whilst at grammar school in the 1960s aged 14, my music teacher asked the class to bring in a record from home. I was the only one who brought in opera... Caruso with "la donna e mobile" on 78rpm. I later discovered that my great grandfather was also involved in the opera.
I have always been attracted to sad and trajic music. Still am.
Your story brought back the same memory from 1959 took a 78 of Caruso to my music class, my beloved dad was a Irish tenor and loved Caruso and Mario Lanza. On this mother's day 2024 I'm watching the Great Caruso starring Mario, thanks for reminding me of 1959 a great year and great time to be a teenager.

My great grandparents came from Cefalu, Sicily in the late 1889s and early 1990s...my maternal great grandfather was a fisherman in the Mediterranean Sea....as told to me by my father...My grandmother sang this song to me in Italian when I was a child!

Ascolto molto spesso il Grande ed unico Caruso sia liriche che nelle meravigliose melodie classiche Napoletane chiudo gli occhi e provo ad immagginare che sono ad ascoltarlo dal vivo in teatro dal loggione riapro gli occhi e mi dico che resta sempre il più grande e insuperabile di tutti i tempi sia come possanza di voce interpretazione e sopratutto anima e cuore che da buon Napoletano non gli è mai mancato! She had a great sory of a Great great Uncle of mine getting into a fight w/ a neighbor over the fact that people in NY could sit @ home in listen to Caruso from a" box" in their home😆the neighbor said IMPOSSIBLE and a mild fight broke out
