Haenyeo are the women sea divers of Jeju, and their history and cultural relevance is so important, UNESCO inscribed the haenyeo culture on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Out of a need to survive, Jeju women of the past were forced into the sea to hunt for food. As more and more women joined the community of sea divers, it grew into a culture of its own, creating a unique phenomenon to Jeju Island.

Wow, what was the temperature of the sea?

This video is from two years ago. Graduation ceremony of Hansupul Haenyeo School usually takes place in late August, so water temperature was probably in the mid-20s celcius. With the help of wet suits, you can easily find Haenyeo in the sea during winter, too.
