      I'm currently creating concepts for a fakemon region (called Oinnrach, based off of the rest of the UK that didnt really get representation) and difficulty is one of the biggest things I've thought about! So far, the settings are "Easy" with the exp share always on and slightly lower level enemies, "Regular" with the exp share, but it works under old school rules of only that pokemon holding it has a cut of the xp, and the enemies are regularly leveled, "Hard" where the xp share is completely cut, and the enemies are slightly higher leveled, and "Champion" available only after beating hard, which actively halves your xp intake, the enemies are even higher leveled (excluding the first few routes) and enemy crits are even more likely, while yours aren't.

    I have to wonder about Gen 8's "Tell, don't show" approach to its plot for pretty much the whole game not making the list.
    Every time something cool or interesting happens it is immediately pushed aside with some NPC being all "Focus on your gym challenge, I'll handle this!", and any time someone actually does something the screen turns black while it happens. The most frustrating moment to me, is when you beat Marnie's Brother, head out of town and see the straight path back toward Raihan's Gym and think "I can probably take that shortcut now and have a more interesting return trip since it's a place I've never been through before". Then you hear there's a Dynamax Pokemon going crazy along that path so you rush in literally seconds after Leon but are blocked by a crowd. So you have to take a flying taxi or backtrack pointlessly through multiple routes, and your reward? You get to hear people talking about how cool it was when Leon beat it into submission rather than seeing any semblance of a fight.
    Then you get to the big showdown with Eternatus and what do you know, the box legendaries show up and completely dominate the fight for you. Sure Gens 1 and 2 have little in the way of plot, but at least they're honest about it and don't constantly string you along with empty promises that something interesting is finally happening.

    • @SamWex
      @SamWex Před 3 lety +17

      I guess it’s more realistic because the champion of the region and the strongest trainer around comes and attempts to save the world, rather than some random kid who is just wandering around. I’ve always wondered why in past gens you, being a 10 year old is tasked with, in Gen 6’s case, LITERALLY STOPPING THE WORLD FROM ENDING. The champion of the region should be the person who deals with this stuff, and it makes sense that Leon tries to take control of the situations, him being the Champion. I also liked how some people said “If Leon would have been training for his upcoming battle, which he knew he was going to have, instead of taking these big creatures, he might have won against the player” This sort of shows that Leon is a true champion who cares about his region more than his status, so I really liked that aspect of gen 8

    • @nishantbhaskar7685
      @nishantbhaskar7685 Před 3 lety +29

      Exactly. Something being realistic doesn't mean it's good for the participants. Unless you play the game exclusively for the competitive arena, you play them to experience an another world, with you yourself as the protagonist instead of the eleven year old kid in the game. RPGs make you associate with the character you are playing, not the other way round. Therefore, I believe it's perfectly normal for the game protagonists to handle the big events unlike they did in Sword/Shield.

      Honestly, galar is the best region in 3D and it’s slightly better in the nonlinear thing thanks to the DLC which also added more postgame content and optional areas to explore and a postgame story. Pokémon Sword and Shield aren’t as linear as Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and Pokémon Sword and Shield aka galar does have a lot of optional areas (including the isle of armor and the crown tundra which added more optional/main game areas and postgame areas in the crown tundra), the isle of armor are considered to be main game and doesn’t requires you to be champion to visit and the crown tundra is postgame content and added more postgame/optional explorable caves, ruins, beaches, islands etc. And the wild area is a fun explorable part of the region and the most of the areas in the wild areas are optional and galar does have some explorable place that you can get lost easily like slumbering weald and the glimwood tangle and some mini islands in some routes, etc and I get lost easily there and in my opinion, the DLC even added more optional areas and postgame areas to explore and a postgame story revolves around legendaries. Pokémon Sword and Shield also have a great storyline and it’s not as bad as Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Gold and Silver. So overall,
      Pokémon Sword and Shield have the most optional explorable areas in all of Pokémon. And Pokémon Sword and Shield are my favorites Pokémon Games and the best Pokémon Games period.

But even those issues don't bother me that much just as long as I'm having fun. And this is just probably me, but despite some of it's issue, I feel like Black 2 & White 2 are the " closest " of being an perfected Pokemon game. But that's just me though. The only reason I was talking about it is because it use to be the most hated Pokemon game and many people probably have either never played it or just experience on how good it was. Not saying there opinion is illogical. But I'll deny anyone who say the Black & White duology us bad.

    • @Orphen_
      @Orphen_ Před 3 lety +1

      @@jjc4924 tbh I think gen 5 is the worst gen.
      Overall I think there are good and bad pokemon in gen 5, like in every gen. However because of the large amount of new pokemon in gen 5, there were alot of bad ones. (And ffs 2 of the best pokemon in the gen aren't available untill the post game, Zoroark and Volcarona...)
      However I could look past that if it weren't for 2 crucial things.
      the most important pokemon in the game were bad...
      namely the starters, the psuedo legendary and the box art legendaries.
      The starters, well they kinda speak for itself... they are overshadowed by litterally every other starter trio...
      The Pseudo legendary hydreigon would be fine if it wasn't the pseudo, but for a psuedo legendary it just looks too weird and ugly and not badass at all... (Easily couldve been way better with actual wings and not heads on the end of it's arms but rather just 3 heads and a some awesome claws, allso a leaner body.)
      The Box art legendaries are the worst offenders though... it's just a white and a black dragon... It's like "Let's get 2 Palkia's, paint 1 white and 1 black... and we have new legendaries..." Kyurem is just ugly and the combined forms look really bad...
      And the second thing why these games are bad, I am forced to take a dull legendary dragon into my champions battle... Forcing the player to use a specific pokemon? That is just REALLY bad in my opinion...
      Overall these things really ruïned my playthrough experience of these games... Still had fun playing them, but I much prefer playing gen 6, gen 7 or the earlyer gens over gen 5...
      All is just my opinion of course.

    I LOVE the fact that you unlock the "older" pokemon from the earlier games only after the main story.
    It was SO cool to encounter only new pokemon throughout the whole maingame. They should've done this in every game. I didn't like Gen 5 this much but this fact was soooo good.

    My biggest complaint about Galar: They dangle this very interesting story of Galar's past right in your face but never let you dive in deeper into the very interesting lore and force you to continue the Gym challenge. I know that taking on the Gyms are a huge part of Pokemon, but felt much more optional than in Galar. Heck, even in the beginning of the games, taking on the Gym challenge is treated more as a suggestion. However, in Sword and Shield, you're practically forced into it. I would have much prefer to investigate the lore of Galar than take on the Gym challenge as it seemed so much more interesting and fun.

Any time something really interesting happened, Leon practically pushed you aside, telling you not to worry and to just focus on the Gym Challenge while he ran off, more than likely getting lost along the way, to take of it himself. Past Champions actually asked you to help like Lance and Steven. Leon won't even let you try to help! The only time you do get to help is during the big final battle! That was so annoying!

    • @CrystalGreymon
      @CrystalGreymon Před 3 lety +23

      @@Midnight3Wonder The thing people might say about Leon pushing you aside to try to defend his actions is that he was being responsible and looking out for you...
      Which I can get except...
      Lance actively helps you take on Team Rocket in Gen 2 and makes sure you're alright along the way, healing your team and sharing information (the former of which was VERY rare in the early games).
      Steven doesn't really do much but he does make sure you do what you do prepared, the same goes for Wallace who functions in the same way as Steven during the game's climax.
      Cynthia checks up on you and makes sure you're prepared, allowing you preparation time and makes sure you're absolutely ready, all while supervising you during the events so she'd probably step in if needed.
      Alder and Iris both do their fair share of work though nowhere close to Cynthia or Lance. Alder also points out when he can't actively carry on assisting because of his Champion duty actively pulling him away and even then he still tries his hardest to stop Team Plasma's plan during that battle.
      Even Diantha looks out for you (although more from afar than anyone up to this point). She still encourages you to follow your heart although of everyone here she had the least active role in keeping an eye out for you.
      Kukui/Hau not sure if they count since they're just the final battle and not officially the champion but they do have some presence in stopping the bad guys from ruining your adventure while not taking your freedom to step up out of your hands.
      Leon's just a shameless glory-hog. He relishes in the fame and popularity he has and soaks in everything because of his title which I genuinely believe under some circumstances were probably rigged by Rose.
      Anime Leon is far less bad because he makes it a point to educate Ash about Dynamax on the fly and let Ash handle the emergency situation he was in but that's not even really the same portrayal so I don't even know why I brought it up...

  • @CrystalGreymon
    @CrystalGreymon Před 3 lety +81

    I... actually liked the Rivals in X and Y...
    And here's pretty much a whole freakin' page as to why!
    "Gen 6 was a generation where I hid myself from as much pre-release information as possible. I wanted it to take me by surprise and I wanted it to feel special. When I finally set foot in the Kalos Region, it was a fresh and clean slate. The only things I knew were how to battle and the prior Pokémon I'd met. That's it.
    Almost instantly, the game introduces you to these few characters that at first you think won't go very far beyond the typical rival archetype of showing up after every gym or so and challenging you to a battle once in a while. But slowly as the game starts and you eventually meet the professor, he gives you some advice:
    "Be the best Trainer you can be! At the same time, remember to have fun traveling with your Pokémon!"
    When you put the thought into it, it's easy to see that every one of the friends/rivals takes that to heart and holds that advice very closely to their hearts. After that point alone, they don't try to battle you unless they want to. There's a singular battle circumstance after that and barring Serena/Calem who actually holds an interest in battling, they don't seek you out to battle you until after the story events involving Xerneas/Yveltal are solved (which is 6 badges later).
    For them, it was never about being the best at battling or being super amazing at contests or anything like that. The advice they were given was "Be the best you that you can be." So instead of aiming to be the best battler or anything else, they just focus on their personal interests and try to be helpful to other people or Pokémon when they can.
    They have plenty of doubts about their own abilities and at achieving their dreams but they're always willing to help out if they can.
    The reason that I like this so much is that you effectively become their beacon of confidence. Much like them, you're just doing your own thing but you also inspire them all with your actions. Team Flare scares them and yet Trevor, the meekest of the whole group, is the one that instantly stands up to them just because you're there supporting him. You have his back and he's gonna do his best to not let you down. If that's not a testament to the friendship that you share then I don't know what is.
    X and Y may not be the best games mechanically or from a story standpoint.
    But they REALLY knew what they were doing when they wrote the most important characters for the plot. They knew what they were doing when they wrote some of the minor characters as well. Pokémon X and Y are games that I'll never forget because they're the first Pokémon games that felt ALIVE to me. I'm glad I had the chance to play them."

    • @DrakeVonKat
      @DrakeVonKat Před 3 lety +11

      Honestly, I think the best way to view it is that the rivals of X and Y are different types of player. Serena/Calem is the typical rival/person who just wants to beat the game and become champion. Trevor is the type of player who is more into completing the Pokedex and seeing all the new Pokemon in the game. Tierno is someone who enjoys doing thematic runs/challenges - for example, a team of Pokemon who all have at least one "dance" move. And Shauna is the type of player who just wants to see the world and all the new towns/routes/what have you, and experience it and have fun. They're all different and valid ways to play and experience the game.
      (I kinda see Wally in ORAS, especially in the postgame, as a fifth type of player; the ones who enjoy the post-game stuff or online battles, and focuses on making the best team he can.)
      But then, I also feel like while Team Flare was disappointing from a story perspective, their theme and what they represented actually worked kinda well.

      Galar was actually handled very well. The level of detail is a lot more than you see on the surface. There are a lot of nods to the UK in more than just the layout of the region, the British slang/phrases, the localized town names structured like actual English place names, etc. You have, for example, the route signs looking like road speed signs, motorstoke and circhester heavily resembling their IRL locations (Manchester and Bath respectively), shops/ticket machines in the stations look in gb exactly like ones in UK stations, the battle cafes basically are Costa Coffee shops, footpath signs, dry stone walls...
      If that's the level of detail that pokemon put into their games, I think we are in for a treat for the remakes. (remember, galar was from scratch, they have an existing region to go off of)

      Pokemon yellow might be an exception because you get pikachu as a starter, but atleast you can get all 3 starters in the same game plus better sprites and less glitches.
      Gen 2 had sprite animations, the suicune plot and the battle tower.
      Gen 3 had sprite animations again, both legendaries, a new plot and - most important of all- the BATTLE FRONTIER!
      Gen 4 fixed a lot of the pacing problems, a new and very sick plot involving giratina and - again - the battle frontier!
      Gen 5 is the first generation where there was no 3rd entry, instead they introduced Black 2/White 2 which apart from taking place in the same region where difficulty enough to be considered their own game.

    My opinions:
    Gen 1: Games are broken and are pretty much held together by glue and string.
    Gen 2: Most of the bosses (gym leaders, elite four, team rocket admins, etc) are underwhelming and kind of easy.
    Gen 3: Too much required HM usage.
    Gen 4: Diamond and Pearl are way too slow.
    Gen 5: Worst anime seasons.
    Gen 6: Megas were too broken in the main game since barely any NPCs used them.
    Gen 7: Too many cutscenes and the games somehow felt slower then Diamond and pearl. Probably the most bored I’ve ever felt playing Pokemon.
    Gen 8: Haven’t played since Gen 7 kind of burned me out. From what I’ve seen the biggest problem I’d probably have is them still using the same models and animations for old Pokemon. Don’t have anything against the models but seeing the same ones for 3 straight gens would just be annoying.

    • @Caerulis
      @Caerulis Před 3 lety +13

      @tristanneal9552 Před 3 lety +5

      @@Caerulis Yeah I personally don't mind reusing the model, but they need to improve the animations of those models to make them more dynamic/lifelike, up the textures like you said to improve visual fidelity, and please dear god fix the color saturation that makes half of the roster look washed out.

      @Caerulis Před 3 lety +8

    • @ShallBePurified
      @ShallBePurified Před 3 lety +6

      You know gen 5 is the best when the main flaw isn't even related to the games lol.
      Gen 8's main flaw is probably its presentation and lack of quality control. A lot of the game felt like it was unfinished or was rushed. One example I have had an issue with that no one ever talks about is how music abruptly cuts and starts into the next song with no transition. This is very obvious when traveling from a route to a town or from a town to a route. The music just cuts off and then the next song immediately starts and it throws me off every time. That's just one example of the lack of polish. Other things are talked about in this video like animations being lackluster even though some animations are really good, the draw distance, etc. The game itself is streamlined so it's less tedious to play than gen 6 or 7, but it just feels like the game isn't fully polished. And of course, the way Gamefreak handled PR is the worst with gen 8. They just seem so tone deaf about it, like they hear the complaints but then ignore them and double down on their decisions without addressing fan concerns.

    • @Hmmm777
      @Hmmm777 Před 3 lety +2

      @@tristanneal9552 I also don't mind about reusing the model, but i thought the animation is going to be really good because they said they will going to cut the dex to improve the animation, but some of them are garbage.
      The signature move though it's pretty cool.

      In case you find a gameboy at home with a cartridge of 1G : play it, you'll see the complaints about glitches are wildly exaggerated. There's a lot on paper, but you encounter none of them in a regular playthrough.
      For example, whenever someone talks about glitches, they mention or show MissingNo. That's something you don't meet without confusing the game on purpose.
      As for the errors in battle codes, those don't break the game and are pretty much invisible to a regular player.
      The development of the first Pokemon games were chaotic, because they had to fit in one of the biggest games of that decade, in terms of content, on a GameBoy cartridge. But even though the code is messy, it's not "held together with tape" : it's just packed enough to fit on the weak hardware. It's more like a miracle of programmation than a mess, and the fact that they managed to make 2G on the exact same hardware, literally keeping most of the content of 1G, is even more prodigious.

    • @masterpig5s
      @masterpig5s Před 2 lety

      @@Dante02d12 I know it's hold together fine. It's when you're purposely doing it essentially now. It wouldn't have got to production if it wasn't. It's very much, what can we leave in or do we have to do to best avoid the player ever seeing this.
      As you say, a miracle of programming. Absolutely.

    Getting rid of the National Dex was going to happen eventually as there's almost 1000 Pokémon now and coding each one in is more difficult than just taking their models and dropping them in as you have to code in their animations, their move pool, their cries, pretty much everything that revolves around every Pokémon

    It's funny, that most of the ,,worst parts'' of Sinnoh actually enhanced my experience, since they made the calm region more atmospheric. The Team Galactic Grunts might be an exception though, since most of them are very uninformed about the true goals, while still following them obediently. However Zyrus, the designs of the commanders and the plans Team Galactic at all followed were that interesting to me, that this team is still my favourite.
