The deck is in its own category here. The deck provides the convenience and comfort that PC's have arguably lacked for years. You can't necessarily package them together in your claim. In addition, it's very possible all consoles start homogenizing into handheld gaming PC's throughout the next two to three decades.

Watching Julien find PC gaming is like watching those videos where people hear a classic song, out of their usual genre for the first time. It's fun to watch. I have been along time PC builder and console user but tend to lean towards PC gaming when it counts. I just threw together, literally out of my parts bin, a i7 2600/GTX970 build for my kid that finally came over to Steam. It's amazing what a CPU from 2011 and a GPU from 2014 can still play. PC's are usually way ahead of their time.

@@TheSniperWhoThere will always be a place for workstation PCs, but I can see the future being phones being workstations for low-power programs like browsers and office suites, but I can see PCs being for VR/gaming, with handhelds continuing their niche as a compromise between those.
All the Steamdeck needs is 5G, and it'd be a great portable everything-device.

@@TheSniperWho Since owning both the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, I can confidently say that in my personal opinion, the Ally gives a much more authentic PC gaming experience than the Steam Deck. Yes the Deck is much more user friendly and convenient similarly to something like Nintendo's Switch, but the overall gaming experience is much more satisfying on the Ally. So while all PC handhelds are great, simply saying Windows based handhelds are lesser than the Steam Deck is fallacious.

That’s why I’m silently quitting PC Gaming and I think will not buy a SD/Ally/Legion. Started in 2017 because I was amused by the fact of building my own gaming machine, I was enjoying the quality and performance. But then I suddenly start to feel the chunkyness of PC: fighting with small issues, buggy games, input problems (I play with controller, mouse and keyboard are not for me) started to ruin my game experience. I realized that I was more on troubleshooting than enjoy the games. After 8 hours of working at the PC I think that for me it’s more enjoyable to just wake up my PS5/Switch with a button and play.

Very well said man. I think it’s very important to list some of the negative aspects of the SD experience. It’s a great device but just like any other console not perfect. That being said I’m enjoying it more and more everyday. The big thing that sold me on it was A) the amazing fluidity of the UI itself, it feels like an iPhone in that respect may not be cutting edge on every front but checks off more boxes than any other device out there. B) Quick Resume or whatever you want to call it is absolutely amazing. It’s better than something you’d get on a PC, and C) the fact that we get an “Achievement” system. Extremely underrated I’m no achievement hunter but achievements really make your experience way more rewarding and I applaud them for thinking about that little detail.

If you grab the Ally, one of the big negatives for it is the first day with it requires TONS of updates before you can properly game. You will need updates for Windows, Armoury Crate and the My ASUS app. Do not try gaming before doing this! Also the battery life sucks! That all said i LOVE my Rog Ally. The way it slays games is great!

The advantages of PC are the power and the versatility. However two things where PC is still making some progress is the "ease of use" for the user, it has definitely come a long way from the 2010s but there are still problems. Two problems I have on a somewhat regular basis are pairing my DualSense with the PC, sometimes it just doesn't "handshake" properly. Another thing was getting surround sound working, I eventually had to buy a new AVR to be able to play games in 4k120fps with surround sound. These things can work on PC and with more power than consoles, but sometimes it takes some trial, error and troubleshooting. Learning is part of the journey, but it's easy to see why people who don't want to/don't like to solve problems on their own might prefer the console experience. The fact that things like surround sound and controllers kind of just "work" on consoles is why many still enjoy.

I'm a recent nintendo switch convert who had until last year spent all of his gaming time on either the PC or Steamdeck. The steamdeck was actually a bit of a gateway drug to the switch for me, the convenience of the steam deck and its pick up and play nature was so close to what I was looking for but I personally find the handheld too large and heavy and the extremely clunky docking experience left me wanting, so after buying a switch it's my steam deck that simply sits around gathering dust. My personal advice though to solve the docking issues with the deck is actually to avoid docking it all together and build a dedicated gaming PC if possible. Steam cloud saves work pretty well and I found that it was easier to simply close the game, let the save transfer and then re-open it on the other device compared to the controller hassles and scaling issues present when docking the steam deck. The windows api's that these games are built to interface with (even if it is through a proton wrapper) just simply don't know how handle things like changing inputs or resolution on the fly very well, because it's never really been a common use case in games on PC before now. So while the steam deck does it's best to work around these things, it would likely take both valve and developers working together on these issues to ever have as seamless an experience as the switch's docking is. Best case scenario it may get better over time, and some games may eventually dynamically support going from handheld to docked mode, but for now any sort of windows or steamos based handheld is only going to be at best serviceable as a hybrid console with tweaking and often game restarts needed between docking and handheld mode.

Ally isn’t too bad now, just need to be realistic about expectations. It’s not a 4090. Big thing that has helped me with mine is using custom wattage and fan curves on battery/plugged in. Keeping temps down, while still getting a solid frame rate. The VRR display is nice to have too. Also when you pick yours up, update everything possible until no updates. I’ve been playing Helldivers 2, MH iceborn, dragons dogma dark arisen and fallout new Vegas lately. Have had a good experience with those titles so far.
Edit: also, as far as you saying you don’t want your purchases across a bunch of stores I agree with you. I have a lot of purchases on psn and I regret not making a lot of them on steam.

I run in to many issues on PC in general, example being the other day i booted up my desktop running Bazzite-Deck and it would take forever to boot up, and when it does the performance is absolutely trash, it struggled to run the ocarina of time PC port. So i submitted the issue to the discord and it was resolved in just a few minutes. Turned out it was a bad update due to the recent linux kernel being pushed, so all i had to do was rollback.
As far as the TV experience goes, my current tv is a TCL roku tv and my dock won't display above 1080p from my steam deck for some reason, my desktop works just fine at 4k so it may just be my dock.
Working with a PC introduces a trial and error process to building your own experience, but once you get it right, you rarly have to change following that

You should check out the steam controller....its not perfect but its pretty cool being able to turn the deck on with the controller, and it also has 2 track pads like the deck so games that make use of mouse controls (think rollercoaster tycoon) are actually playable from the couch without a keyboard and mouse. Tho the DualShock 5 is a pretty good deck controller too but the track pad is awkward if you were to play games like that.

I've connected Bluetooth controllers and have them just not work but connect but just won't register buttons and starts acting like a keyboard, the controls are amazing that steam has brought to us but on steam deck it doesn't seem as easy as just programming the buttons as it should be

There's definitely a lot of troubleshooting when it comes to PC gaming. Hours of research, lots of trial and error. Steam deck isn't without it's issues either. But I will say it like this, if you plan on playing solo/by yourself, then PC can be plug and play ready once you set it up right. If you plan on playing with other people with multiple controllers (especially on emulators other than Redream and Retroarch) expect the thing you fear the most...clunky. It can be frustrating when things don't run smoothly even after doing numerous tests on everything. But you'll come to realize that's just PC gaming, it's far from perfect, one day we'll get there though.

I have a PS5, XBox Series S and a Steam Deck Oled. I love my Steam Deck but it gets 3rd place when comparing the 3. Here are my reasons.-
-bad graphics and framerate docked(I mainly play Elden Ring on my SD). note: The handheld experience is great with the oled screen.
-7.4" screen makes reading text difficult(I have to use a magnifying glass to read some numbers on the thing lol)
-No game subscription service available. Game Pass and PS+ are an amazing value. Why buy PC games when we can play the same games for "free"?)
For me, the Steam Deck is the best choice for gaming on the go and travel. At home, I'm going with my main consoles. Any new games that come out, I'm buying on PS5. But, I do use the Xbox the most. Game Pass is just so good. Dead Island 2 got shadow dropped onto Gamepass last week, and I had a blast playing it. Looked great too. Diablo 4 comes to Game Pass later this month. What about Dead Space? It was epic!

You can't play a Playstation game with an X-box controller on the Switch while you can on the Stream Deck. I can output HDR with the Deck but not with the Switch. I use $25 8k usb c docking station on Amazon but I wouldn't risk using it with the Switch since it doesn't use standard usb c.
(Games that has small text I will map the build-in magnifier to "R4". Often the cursor will disappear but will be in the middle of the screen and can still click on the UI. A game that has zoom I will map the right trackpad to zoom in with clockwise movement and zoom out with counterclockwise movement.)
(This is why the Deck sometimes requires to you change controller manually as the Deck has trackpads and 4 back buttons that are not on a controller. It allows me to have one control scheme when I'm playing in handheld and one controller scheme when it's dock and using a controller. )

What should I expect as far as the resolution setting? Should I just set everything to low? I know it is different per game, but Portal is honestly the only game I have been able to run smoothly. I am asking here, not complaining about the system. I do not have the oled.

Remember that the SD screen is 800p or 900p (can’t remember off the top of my head). I’d suggest keeping it that resolution or even dropping it to 720p. Combine that with low texture, then you should get at LEAST a stable 30fps depending on the game. Oh and enable V-Sync. That helps minimize screen tearing.

On the other hand I have an AYANEO 2S and it runs everything I throw at it with no crashing. Windows is just better for gaming, these games are built on it after all.

For the TV because I was pulling my hair in this one, make sure when you select a game, go to steam settings for the game and put on resolution Native. Using this will unlock your monitors resolution. The bad thing is that you have to set it for every game. Hope it helps

I have the steamdeck for a year and now I’m getting the OLED. As cool and easy going steamdeck is, sometimes Linux can make a small issue seem like this huge problem. I have had the controller stuff as well. The way I went around it, was just check before I start a game

I have a ROG ally as well and my channel is mostly about the handhelds. I would say if you are familiar with windows ROG will leave some things from steamdeck desired like the sleep mode or battery, but in my experience the Docking on rog ally is flawless compared to SteamDeck.

I think you have a misconception about the convenience. PC does require a little bit of work but game developers have to optimize games to run on whatever hardware. This is normally why they run better on console because it’s a known hardware spec. PC can have a multitude of hardware combos.

I'm sorry to say but docking the Steam Deck doesn't give you more power, it's the same as in hand held. Also I don't know if you know this but docking the Nintendo Switch also doesn't give you more power, what really happens is that you lose power in hand held. It's because the Switch is already downclocked from the full power the tegra x-1 has to begin with and it just gets further downclocked in hand held because it is on battery not ac.

Dragon ball? …Who’s gonna tell him guys?
Edit: the steam deck is a full on PC. A lot of the gripes you are bringing up are software side. I would say up until around the time of the Xbox 360 and ps3 era, games are not guaranteed to have native controller support. As more console games got ported to PC in that era, they came with controller support natively, and it got adopted as industry standard. But older games, even trying to play games ported to windows 7 on windows 10 can have compatibility issues, nevermind playing games on Linux. I was trying to play Bioshock the original port on my windows 10 machine, however I could not get audio to work for like 2 days after work troubleshooting. I eventually got it to work, but old windows games are difficult to play. I used to have an old windows 7 laptop that I tore down just because, but I wished I kept it to have an easier time playing games made for that era.
tldr: the work valve have done to make PC games playable on linux is amazing

What a coincidence. I am playing through the OG FF7 now with mods on steam deck. Just got out of midgar and I can report it runs perfect. Never had to sign into squenix anything. Rock solid 60 with the mod. 7thdeck makes installing 7th heaven on the deck a breeze. Playing with enhanced backgrounds and orchestral music at 60 fps have been highlights. I chose to play through the new threat 2.0 mod for a little spice and it does that.

The SteamDeck is the answer I think. I simply cannot monopolize the TV and I want to play games from all parties - PlayStation and Microsoft.

Still get upset at broken pc ports 😅

I was a console player from PS1 to PS3, till I got a laptop, then a PC, that lead to a 'proper' gaming PC. now I exclusively play on Steam Deck. It has the flexibility of PC and the convenience of consoles. The problems are easily solved with only a search, since the community is full of tinkerers that solves on behalf of those that can't. I can't wait for 2026/2027 for the potential steam deck 2.

Frequently, my Steam Deck has connectivity issues with the external display, either it won't send out audio to the display ("external speakers" don't show up in the settings) OR neither video or audio will output. Either I have to restart the deck (annoying) or boot into desktop mode to fix it there (also annoying)

I wear the same thing everyday...basically. Most of the week at least. The same Costco pack of black shirts. I have like 2-3 different pairs of the same basic pants from Costco. The same plain black work shoes...that look cheap but were fairly expense due to being ergo and slip resistant. They have outlasted any Nike's that I had when I was younger. I have a few pop culture tees that I mix in every now and then, Nintendo, bands or Star Wars but not very often. They are conversation starters more than anything. As long as I look clean and plain is all I care about. Clothing and fashion is very over rated.

The ROG Ally has terrible battery life, I believe worse than the Legion Go. HOWEVER, it's smaller and lighter than the Go and Steam Deck. I have a Deck and an Ally, using the Deck by default and the Ally for anything the Deck can't do, and it's great. Still simplified because they still share the same Steam library, plus you can dock the Ally with a keyboard/mouse and acclimate yourself to Windows before investing in a larger PC. You might not even need a larger PC, actually. You could get an XG Mobile with 4090 and get 4k60 everything right off the Ally. Sure, it's $2000, but a 4090 card by itself is $1600. Personally, I'd get a dedicated desktop for that money because I like to keep a home file/media server running with TBs and TBs of space, but the choice is yours. This space is all about choice.

One thing I've realized with people who "PC" game is that y'all start to over think everything. Every little frame dropping, every little thing under 60fps and everything that stutters. I don't get it.
I pop a game on my Steam Deck and I go. And the one thing I tell people is if you're able to sit and let Nintendo get away with all of their low tier games and their games not running smoothly. Then you definitely can let it go on the Steam Deck, cause it's nowhere near as bad as it is on the switch.
Secondly, y'all get in y'all heads too much about the little icons. I've realized that if it runs on PS4 and or Switch it can run on Steam Deck, even if it's not verified. I play a bunch of Japanese games that are open world RPGs that don't ever get verified cause it's a small nich game.... And I have no trouble.
Thirdly. Don't overcomplicate things. If it can't play at 60, put it at 30 and you're good to go. And I have the 64gig version. And I haven't wished for anything more lol. I may get the OLED simply cause it's OLED. But I'm not in a rush to upgrade

This isn't entirely true. For the longest time I couldn't even play Dragon Ball Fighterz on my Steam Deck not sure if this is still the case due to me no longer having one. In order to play Tekken 7 I had to use a workaround which required me to use Proton but still wasn't a plug and play experience out of the box. There were other games like that too, it's not a one size fits all type of thing, I wish it was though. Games that have DRM was a hassle for me to play on the SD
