Today it started to be a gasket repair on the fuel pump witch was leaking oil, but turned into a full fuel injection pump rebuild with the new updated plungers and tappets. Hello my name is Mike and I'm the owner operator at TCM & Excavating also known as Dirt Boss please leave a comment and tell me what you think!

it's always something else once you get in there. it's good to do it your self if you can that way you know it's done right and you don't get ripped off. nice job dirt boss!
As I'm watching this go down, I can feel the pain of that weight and the worry of what happens when it slips. I have a, shiny with oil, yellow nylon rope with a looped end for this exact purpose. You can tie it to something above and let it down a little at a time. You are awesome, great video. Thank you for your help on this.
Hey thanks man ! Good tip
Bravo Dirt Boss! “ Stay there baby” was worth watching . God Bless and keep safe
Lol thanks man !
Timing procedure is at ~22:00 if anyone was wondering
Great job again. Skill, knowledge, patience, hard work - you got the lot.
Thanks Terry!
Great to see you healthy Boss! I’ll bet you were wishing you had steam cleaned the motor once you got in that deep LOL. Another great lesson on patience and Hardwork! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Thanks Ed much appreciated!

What a great feeling when you see no leaks.great job 👍
Thanks
Wow Mike, that was one hell of a job you took on. I give you a lot of credit for tackling it. A job well done! Stanley in Md.
Yeah I try to do most of my maintenance.. if I had a good shop I would before efficient!
Thanks Stan
Good job fixing that. I was just in a similar situation on a smaller engine working on a power steering pump.
Thanks Don! Yeah I've had them leak too.
Stay safe bud!
Great information dirt boss greetings from the United States Virgin islands st.thomas in the Caribbean Us territory I am new to your channel and I am a journeyman heavy equipment mechanic I got 9 years of heavy duty truck and earthmoving equipment experience thanks for the instruction on this isx Cummins and it has been helpful my dad was a diesel technician he taught me of most of I know so far he passed away last year so thanks for the video God bless you and your family and I will be going for my CDL soon
AWESOME thanks for the response & sorry to here about your pops my DAD passed 3 years ago and its the hardest thing to deal with but time truly heals my friend.
It’s sad that you have to take it apart for a gasket but a blessing you found out about the destruction it could have caused if it was not addressed most people would have let it leak and not cared but not the BOSS like the way you stay on top of things hey prime example here cause of your caring you stopped catastrophic failure!!!!!good call mike!!!
yup exactly thanks Henry
Now that was one heck of a video and thank you for filming it. You deserve huge kudos for that one Dirt Boss! The pump rebuild discovery was a real life saver, for sure. With all the little fiddling and jockeying of things, sure wish I could have been there to help, but you sure got it. And I was so proud of you seeing those gloves on - two times, no less. I know they tore after a while, but still, you had them on!
Yeah definitely could of used another hand..your right those gloves only last for so long then they rip! Thanks Dale! 😁
You are spot on sir. I had a customer that had the ceramic plungers go bad and it was $30k ..The miles were at 125k but THE HOURS WERE AT 8500 so that equate to 350k to 400k. The truck was 6 years old.. So NO WARRANTY. God Bless you sir.
Wow crazy stuff sad they don't take responsibility
really great video.. hats off to you to do this alone. great job!
Thanks a ton!
Great job Boss those jobs always start with one thing and go up from there stay safe
Thanks Mike you too!
Can’t wait for Max to grow a little so he could be out there helping!!!
Yes i cant wait!
Working and filming that is incredible hell of job 👏and at the same with entertaining.
Thanks buddy appreciate that
Good job man, and great video very helpful, thank you

Welcome
Great job that looks like a lot of work excellent!!!!
Yeah it took about 8 hours
good work man, wrenching and filming!!! I have to do mine. thanks
You're welcome Good luck
Great job dirt boss. If I pulled that apart we would have a blizzard.
I hear ya Janet!
Great job well done and trust me the fuel pump is so heavy it's like a mini engine
Yeah it is like a little unbalanced motor difficult to get up into that frame!
Good job 👍 thanks for the lesson
Welcome Robert
Great video. Just purchased a used 2016 truck. Same motor. SAME ISSUE.
Get her done! 💪🏼
Great video i am in the middle of a pump replacement myself
Nice
you look Mechanic no one can do it first time this job, ether you was Mechanic or you're Mechanic Right Now anyway thanks for showing this beautiful video
You're welcome Thanks
Greetings boss of dirt....wow...that was quite a task...congratulations d honestly you did a really good job....I would offer you a small suggestion that in the future repairs..it’s always easier to clean it up with some brake clean and compressed air..you are absolutely rite to be concerned about any debris getting inside your fuel system
Charles I know you are correct.. I got a little ahead of my self on that one! Thanks
God bless you man ! Thanks for t help.
Your welcome
Wooww i have a volvo 2013 with same engine and same oil leak.. im headiing to the shop an get mine right.... thanks 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

How much did they charge you
Agreed I have a 93 w900l with b model cat can’t wait to get it finished and get out of the newer stuff love the video 🤙🏻
Thanks Man 👍🏼

@@DIRT-BOSS thanks I have a 2016 doing the pump also
Great video. Sorry to hear that business in slow. Stay well.
Yeah Ted crazy times right now.. stay safe! Thanks
The camera on the fuel pump sure gives you a clear picture of the pump sliding into place without the gear moving out of time. Your back up running now.
Yes sir thank you
I'm impressed. Well done.
Thank you sir!
Credit where credit is due, I'm doing this sort of thing all day on site so i know how hard that was for a diesel fitter to do without workshop facility's,so for a novice ????. like i said I'm impressed.@@DIRT-BOSS
@@phillippearson2596 thanks much appreciated! 👍🏼
Thank you! What a way to start a new video - YOU - making a grand entrance with the 'good lookin' truck of distinction. Decals on the tanks and big one on the tailgate look awesome along with all the chrome touches and that dump body - WOW!
Sorry you had to do all that work but much better than $35k/motor - OMG! And yes, this virus thing is insane (and real). Great thing is, everything can always be worse so let's think positive on this issue and move forward (I hope quickly)! Thanks for another one. Sonny (CT)
Hey, you want me to send you some toilet paper?
Thanks Sonny! Were good on the TP! LOL
good video bro thank you
Man you are my hero
Lol thanks nan

Good job brother
Thanks
Excellent
Thanks 👍🏼
You good
Good job!🧤🍻🇺🇸
Thanks buddy!
Brilliant vid well done were you nervous when you started it first time.all the best from Scotland.
No not really nervous just cautious!
Thanks👍
Thanks
Love your spirit man love the do it yourself attitude! Don’t want to sound like a KIA but let that lift pump fill your filter Cummins does not recommend pre filling , you can introduce dirt into the fuel system which can cause damage to those plungers in the pump as well as stick an injector open among other things. Have a good one!
Thanks for the tip! I asked Cummins too! They told me to fill it.. I was thinking I could just cycle the key a bunch more times..
Thanks
If u want get a plug that fits the center threaded part of the filter that way your filling though the filter and effectively filtering your pre fill!
@@mikemorse8592 got ya!
Heck of Job.
Thanks
Pump is a behemoth hollyy cow!!
real heavy
The master
😂 thanks
😂 great video
U r good
Thanks Chris!
Great video. What will happen if the timing not adjusted. I had my fuel pump reinstalled because of an oil leak now it's throwing code 1139(injector code)
From what I know the timing isn't supercritical it just makes the pump little bit quieter.. as far as the injector they could have got some debris in the lines when reinstalling
What year is the engine great information I learned a lot
2013 #2250
Nice job Mark.... Saving money is the same as making money. I agree Technology is making things worse!!
The truck looks awesome. Diamond plates lettering and the dirt BOSS on the polished fuel tank. Looking good!
Stay safe and vigilant. We will win!
Thanks buddy you also stay safe!

Having worked for both kenworth and peterbilt dealerships most of my 35 years of turning wrenches. I can tell you that you will be overcharged every time. Six hours for you but under warranty it's half that. Manufacturers don't overpay
I hear ya
Who did the up date ?because I’m trying to get the Steell pistons to replaced the ceramic ones but I can’t find them
Go to Cumins
That video went south in a hurry. Went from $5 to $850. At least you saved yourself a bunch of money though by doing it yourself. Good job. I try to never pay someone to do something that I can do for myself. Stay safe bud.
I hear ya that's how us guys learn over the years! Thanks bud!
You need a shop! I give you credit. Too much stuff to remove for me. I’d never get it back together
I know I've been putting it off for years! Always something else pops up as priority!
Thanks bud 👍🏼
The bolt is in your fan shroud, it fell off when you pushed it down to remove the the hose.
Thanks man i found it .. good eye
About the ceramic parts inside the fuel pump:it happened to me back in March 2018...7 working days at hotel for me...and 10k $ bill to be paid.
Now it's February 2021: 6 working days,12k $ ...and it's not done yet. The same problem- both fuel pumps are broken...255k miles its not enough.
You're telling me the new fuel pump update failed also?
Yes. It's down. Both of them. In my case the electric fuel pump went down first. It wasn't sending enough fuel to main pump...so I don't think the pump is the problem. It's just my luck!!!
Btw they installing a new updated fuel pump.
@@LeeAstus well good luck Hope you get back on the road soon Thanks for watching !
if you want to just replaced the plungers and tappets do you just recommend taking the head of the fuel pump? and avoid the hassle of timing it right
Jean I believe you can do the procedure with it in the truck. I obviously would get a diagram first.
Thanks for watching!
@@DIRT-BOSS thank you!
And fyi on the ISX the fuel pump and air compressor have to be timerd with the crank shaft and harmonic balance ...cummings is uses the harmonic balancer ,air compressor and fuel pump for dampening vibration on the crankshaft ..its OK to be one gear tooth off but no more or simply put it will let the crank shaft vibrate beyond acceptable levels and it will over time destroy the crank bearings .
Nice good info Thanks for watching
For fuel pump the timing tool is needed but if its not available all I do is put the timing mark at a 45 degree angel towards the middle of engine if you are looking at the gear it should have a mark or a 0 that is what I always put at a 10 o'clock or 1030 u will feel it when it sits just right of course have the damper at the insert pin mark and u will be good
Only fuel pump is timed
@@Eljuancho915 air compressor is timed also ..well for my 2010 isx ..
When u buy a new air compressor it has the timing mark on the gear and typically will be etched in the gear and have white paint on it ..im 100% the engine has to be pinned and the timing mark gos at 12 o'clock on the compressor
Can you tell me, what is the low pressure fuel line banjo bolts torque?
Snugg ah Dugga
I know this video is 3 years old but I have a question when it comes to the gasket. At 24:57 you put the gasket in place and slide the fuel pump into the hole. Would it be possible to slide the gasket over the gear and then put the fuel pump in the hole to reduce the chance of cutting the rubber with the gear? Just researching because I have a very small leak and I'm thinking about tackling this job.
Yes you could do it that way too the reason why I didn't cuz there was no way to hold it up there.. but definitely try it
Not bad for a rookie
Thanks man
Have a leak around same area think it's coming off air compressor or timing gear gasket blowing down and back any suggestions?
Did update to feul pump few years didn't want them metals either👍👍👍
It's hard to say check the little timing circle plug where you insert to crank the motor over it's a 1-in rubber plug they leak there.. I actually showed it on one of my videos.. hang on I'll get the link
czcams.com/video/bqpBskx9_BY/video.html
If you sent it out in the beginning they wouldn’t have updated the pump and the long run would have been miserable good call!!!
i know that would of been bad
I am just wondering how much did it cost you the update kit and where did you get it from
I think it was 300 bucks I got it from Cummins
Correct me if I’m wrong, but would it be easier to the gasket on the pump side before sliding it on?
Yes you are so correct after watching this video back I was like what the hell did I do there!!
@@DIRT-BOSS I was asking because I wanted to know, I am getting ready to do it tomorrow on my truck. Thank you for the video, it helps a ton!
Shouldn't Cummins have performed the update for you, free of charge, like a recall? Great vid, keep these coming
No they won't take responsibility.. thanks
@@DIRT-BOSS That's a shame, they were always such a responsible company! Guess they shouldn't get any federal bailout money this go around
Do you remove the fuel pump out from top or from the bottom? Thanks!
Bottom
My truck had the same one fuel pump like yours, oil leaks at the same spot. I tried to replace the gasket, but the fuel pump gear had moved when I removed the pump. Trying to set the pump’s timing so many time, but not luck. Do you have any way how to set timing on the pump? Thanks for your help.
@@Wonderviewco I had Cummings time it when they rebuilt it then was careful putting it in not to mess with it
Is that a socket stuck on that pump bolt at 31:56? Great informational video though. Thanks!
Thanks I did see it after I shut the camera down
where do u buy that fuel pump replacement parts
Cummins
how much was that i have same issue i m thinking to replace the whole pump brand new pump cost over $2400 at cummins
@@r6raheel I said it in the video if you want exact you'll have to go back and watch it but I believe it was a few hundred dollars for them to install parts too I brought the pump to them
was this Cummins a CM 2250?
2350
@ 31:58 you left a socket on the bolt down in there.
Yes I got it that night! Good eye Thanks.
Does not make sense if the ceramic breakes it will go in the entire engine. What are the oil and fuel filters for? Would it stop any debris from entering the engine
no it contaminates before filters
@@DIRT-BOSS I hear from a mechanic that the debris fall in the oil pan. Do you know anyone personally who damaged the engine because of the ceramic
I'm letting kenworth do it...
Lol
I wonder how bad business will be this year. What I gather from listening to various you tube shows and talking to bankers it will be far worse then the 2007-2010 down turn. Hope everyone has a pile of cash saved up to get through it. Should be a lot of good auction values on good equipment again.
Yeah i agree but hope not! Crazy times bud!
The fuel pump is not timed to the engine. You can pull it at any position.
Anthony yes it is timed there was a campaign on it when you got the new update they actually time it and it makes it quieter
@@DIRT-BOSS ok I'm working on a 2013 model Is 15. The cam gear and the crank are locked and pinned in time at top dead center. According to the Cummins manuel for that particular model..you can install the fuel pump back in.. even if the pump gear accidentally is moved. As long as the crank and cam are in top dead center. Not saying you're wrong..just going by the book.
18:00 ceramic plunger who thought that was a smart idea to install these engines can reach 1million miles or more who thought hey this will keep the engine going for longer.
Yup
Kw has it they just don’t want to give it up unless you pay for it
Yeah they must! Crazy how do they perform there own work! 🤔
Thanks
How many times did u swear when you do this job,
Lol
Extra now or a lot later if you didn’t take care of the pump you would have had visions of 100 dollar bills with wings on them flying away!!!!
Yes correct scary scary
It cost me $15, 761 in 2018 just maim bearings rod bearing fuel pump oil cooler cm 2250 beware
Bryan i hear the crazy stories.. yeah im aware and nervous.
I may do the bearings and rods soon.
Bryan its my belief that if you dont catch the fuel pump soon enough it flakes apart and puts ceramic pieces throughout the engine and destroys the bearings.. is that what happened to you?
Yes that's exactly what happened
I still like this truck 🚚 better than the ford
Ron she sure is a pretty truck! 👍🏼
Nah I’ll let the shop do it lol
Lol do it!
😂
i always say , take your cummins to cummins and your cat to cat , the hell with kenworth they didnt build the engine anyway
That's right ! Thanks for watching
No warranty 😩
I know 😡!!
My butt they don't have a diagram. I mean why the heck would you pay someone 1000$ if they had to guess timing and potentially ruin your truck
Exactly
The fuel pump isn’t timed, it’s not a timed pump it’s electric there’s no need to time anything with the air compressor or fuel pump.
Do your research yes there is on the update there is a timing schematic which makes the pump quieter
Looks like I’m going to be out of 1000 bucks
It's money well worth spent You don't want that pump to go then you're out big money The truck will perform better also
Bad video you didn’t show how you took it out but you can really effin talk
😂😂😂😂😂
Hello, what year is your truck I’m having the same issue with the same engine my truck in 2017 Peterbilt 579 isx15. Do you know if I need to update my truck plunggers ?
13 yes I would.. call Cummins with your Vin #
