In episode 28, we're talking about the 991.1, the last generation of Porsche's 911 to come with a naturally aspirated flat six on all standard models (except for the 911 Turbo, which has always been turbocharged). Joining us again is Columbia Valley Luxury Cars Owner and Porsche Panorama Contributor Nathan Merz. We’ll review the many different variations of 991.1 available, what options you should look for in your purchase, as well as what you should expect to pay.

Purchased my 991 Carrera S from Nathan 3 years ago. Nathan convinced me to drive it back to Northern Minnesota, probably the most fun I have had with my clothes on. Through the Cascade Mts. Up into the Rockies, across the Bighorns and up through the Blackhills. The 991 is a great touring car, thank you Nathan for allowing me to bond with this fantastic vehicle!

The start of the best looking 911 ever. The 991.1 targa, just beautiful. You can talk performance all day long but most 911s are fast enough for common roads and speed limits. The beauty of the targa changed my mind on the 911.

Purchased a 2013 991.1 C2S MT in 2016. 21,000 miles on the odometer and paid somewhere in the high 70s for it. Just a great car. Awesome cockpit layout, great power to weight ratio. Handling characteristics are fantastic. A pure joy to drive. Yes, I baby it, its a weekend warrior mostly with some occasional trips. Keeps me smilin'.

Do you think $63,900 for a 2013 991.1 Carrera S coupe, with 78k miles is overpriced? Clean title, 5 prior owners, no accidents, aqua blue metallic, beige interior, PDK.

Just got my hands on a 2013 991.1 Carrera S. Incredible car, light 3.100 Lbs, fast and smooth, and very comfortable on the road. In Normal Mode, in contract to Sport, Sport Exhaust turned off, it is scarily quiet. Be prepared to pay to $75,000 + for one of these cars...I paid nearly $80.0 and don't regret it for a moment...thank the good gods above that Porsche made quite a few of these before going to the twin Turbo 991.2.

Hi, I just got my 991.1 C4S and I can't believe this Porsche, I've had 45 or so Porsche in my life and I looked into the 991-2012-2016 as what I thought I wanted- Very happy and his older brother is a 1996 993-Twin-midnight blue and tan interior with 21K- can't bring myself to drive him a lot, so that was my hope to get great newer Porsche and WOW- these are great cars!

I had the washer fluid hose fail on my 981, and it is a super easy fix. I have tons of metric air tubing and fittings at my disposal at work. The plastic washer fluid line is 6mm OD, so I used some flexible urethane tubing (SMC TU0604B) and one touch couplers (SMC KQ2H06-00) to splice it. Better than new. Lots of other brands out there too.

I absolutely love my 2015 4S Cabriolet with PDK. I bought it late in 2019 right before the pandemic during one of those dead months form car sales perspective. It had ~26k miles, one owner from FL, clean Carfax. I bought it sight unseen and had it delivered to VA. Then, I paid about $4k below average retail value - mostly because I got it from GM/Cadillac dealership and that car did not fit their inventory at all, so they had in stock for about 90 days. In 19 months I only put 3,700 miles on it and funny part - now with this absolutely crazy car market my 911 is worth at least $5k more than I paid. Don’t bother to contact me about selling it - no way I’m letting it go!😁

Regarding the host, and please don't take this the wrong way as you seem like a super nice guy and my intention is purely constructive, but you could have done a little homework in advance - even 10 minutes to read the spec sheet would have made a big difference.

Purchased a 2013 911 991.1 Carrera S Cabriolet with 33k miles CPO. I will say this is probably the most amazing car I’ve purchased. Drives and handle like a dream it also screams loud when pushing hard on it. But buyers be ware, if you do not get a warranty on a car like this you will regret it! Although this vehicle had low miles I’ve had to replace various things. So far this car has had a PDK transmission replacement, 2 motor mounts, window switch, amongst many other things like new set of tires and battery all at the tune of over 20k. If you have money to burn then take the chances if not I definitely recommend getting the BEST warranty. I spent 5500 on the warranty and it’s paid it’s self off several times over. JM&A covered all the components thus far.

I just bought a 2012 991.1. I haven't had it long but I'm loving it so far. I wanted a "smaller" vehicle around 3,000lbs with good handling and power, and something that pulled my heart strings when I looked at it and heard it. It's checked all of those boxes. The only "downside" is it's a PDK and I wanted a manual, but I gave up trying to find my "perfect" spec. The PDK is much better than I thought it would be. I only drive it in manual mode and it acts like a manual whereas an automatic in manual mode still acts like an automatic that you shift - night and day difference behind the wheel.

Bought a 2012 S in February. I’ve wrung out some extra power with exhaust, plenum, intake and tuning. About 460 bhp. Added the third, center radiator for our desert temps in AZ. The only car I’ve ever owned that I have “raced” (one autocross so far) or put on a track (owner’s experience at Porsche LA). Its handling and drive train are flat out exhilarating. Nathan has it about right. I was considering a 997, but the 991.1 has a more robust and reliable power plant, and it’s part of a model progression that is simply more car all around. I’ve had to fix some things already, including all the change over valves and a new wiring harness for them since the original 991.1 COV’s were simply not up to par and Porsche changed vendors in 2014. New drive belt, belt tensioner, expensive PDK service for 60,000 mile service, etc. Planning to upgrade the suspension with Ohlins coilovers and GT3 lower control arms for a bit more camber. Installed an aftermarket Apple CarPlay unit for streaming audio and navigation. It’s a keeper.

Not sure I agree with these guys on a few things. 1) Manual tranny on 991.1 is just fine. It may not be as good as the 6 speed in the 918 (but it's fine). Don't opt for the PDK based on that. 2) Manual 991's are harder to find and are commanding a premium. 3) SC is the must have option - not PSE. Even on manual 991's, the SC adds dynamic engine mounts and makes the car sharper. You can really tell the difference between Sport vs,.Sport Plus (the way the throttle is mapped, etc.).

Was able to get about 22K off MSRP because the dealer was trying to clear for new 991.2 models. I really wanted this car for the 3.8 L NA engine. Very glad I did. PDK and sport chrono with 20” sport techno rims. My wifes only complaint is lack of infotainment upgrade and apple car play( which we have in our 2018 Macan). 🤔🤔🤔 maybe I will keep it that way so I can drive it more !

Exactly why I bought a "slightly used" 2015 911 Carrera 4 GTS with a 7-speed manual and a mere 98 miles on it. And that was in the summer 2018, so it was a 3y 1m old used car. Plus it had $45,620 in factory options, mostly performance options. So why did I not buy a new 991.2 for less money? The 3.0L and turbos and there is nothing wrong with that, but it is not what I wanted in my Porsche. I also did not want a PDK.
Now what gets me is the 991 series has been around since 2012, and till the very end, they have coolant leaks from either the water pump and/or the plastic coolant pipe. Now it took them long enough to "maybe" sort out the issues (a redesigned plastic coolant pipe and another part number for the water pump). I realize it isn't every owner, but some owners have had them replaced at least once. Sort of reminds me of domestic car corporate mentality. I joke about it because maybe Porsche was never meant to produce a liquid cooled car as I also have a air-cooled 993.

You guys also need to keep in mind the reason these cars constantly grow.
When we are driving on the autobahn here in Germany at 250kph the cars need to be safe fast. We drive fast here and other cars drive fast and you need all these additional safety features built in.
911 is basically now a performance GT car.

Bit of a middle child since it's not as raw as the 997.2 or as fast and good looking as the 991.2 but at the same time it's kind of a goldilocks because it's newer and easier to find than a 97.2 but still NA unlike the 91.2

Hey I'm considering a 991. I had a 997 as a daily driver but found it difficult live with on long trips. A lot of noise in the cabin. Anyone gone from 997-991? How did you find it? More of a useable daily due to the longer wheel base? Thanks.

I have been bitten by the 911 bug. I have been looking online and found a 991.2 (2018) GTS that looks like a strong candidate, although I would prefer the manual to the PDK. It is a certified car. Of course, the dealer wants way too much for it. My question is, how much can I expect to pay to extend the certification? Is that an item that I can negotiate, or do I just spread my cheeks?
