- Look who's back!
I was going back and forth for a while now as to what video idea would I create first after my long (and somewhat deserved) hiatus. And there really was no better idea than discussing my favourite aspect of progressive-rock - the side-long suite.
Hopefully, I was able to share some of my excitement for the topic with you!
Special thanks goes to @UpsilonNova for composing background music for this video! ✨

I missed your narration. So glad to have you back with content as good as Polyphonic ❤
Wow! This is simply an unfathomable complement!
I am obsessed with Polyphonic's style and try to learn a lot from how he reviews music and makes his videos, so I'm happy that this video shows it 😊
@@365DaysofProg stay the course and trust your instincts ♥️
Procol Harum´s "In Held 'Twas in I" was the first prog epic (1968).
I was made aware of it after making this video, and there is certainly a good claim to made on validating what you said.
The Nice also made Ars Longa Vita Brevis in 1968, I think about 19 minutes long
@@simonthoben189 - Correct, but "In Held `Twas in I" was released 2 months earlier.
I really love this video! The visuals alone are so smooth and engaging and I really love that I recognize a lot of these songs and I wish nothing but the best for this channel!
Thank you Tony! It's been a while in the making and it really brought me back to my graphic designer era ;P
Wow!!! Fabulous work.
Thank you very much! 💛
Very well done! I can tell you put a lot of work onto your videos. Enjoy the coffee!
Just woke up; will DEFINITELY enjoy this coffee!
Thank you so much, Bobb
Welcome back! I'm very impressed with your video skills, this was a great start to a new era. I like a Side-Long Suite but it's been the easiest way for non proggers to make fun of prog, a poor suite makes for easy ridicule. A good prog suite though is wonderful so they can bugger off!
Glad to be back!
"Supper's Ready" is not a side-long suite. It is the second track on the B Side of "Foxtrot". 😊
Alas, you got me! But I think I can live on with that mistake ;P
It just goes to show that I am lacking this album in my physical collection severely...
It’s a side long suite. It was written as a side long suite. Horizons is just added on.
Fantastic!!!
Museo Rosenbach all the way! Thanks for the publicity, it so deserves it..
SO DESERVED!
@@365DaysofProg Also noticed Focus on the side-long list. I'm seeing them tonight!
@@notnowjohn765 Oh wow! Have fun!
If you've not heard "Super Nova" by Gracious, you're missing out. 24 minutes of non-stop beauty!
I have and it's beautiful! No idea why I didn't mention it in this video though... :P
EPIC Video Naomi !! Thanks !!
You're wholly welcome! It's one of my video projects I am most proud of ever! :D
There are several of these side-long suites I still have to get my ears on, but seeing a ~20 minutes track in an album's list is definitely a hook. About the last section, I would like to step outside of the prog realm and add two honorable mentions for a couple of indie artists: Bonniesongs' just-below-20-minutes accordingly titled The Suite, and Sufjan Stevens' 25-minute Impossible Soul
I have noted those two down and will try and get around to listening to them soon. Thank you!
Wow. So glad I finally found the time to watch this. Phenomenal editing and a really well written heartfelt celebration of one of prog's most enduring and appealing features. A clear labour of love about works that are, more often than not, also labours of love!
You and your slick words!
This video endured such a long wait on my bucket list, and now that it's made, I couldn't be prouder.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, and if you have the time for it, I'd love to see you enter a personal EP submission to the contest I'm hosting atm ;)
As I massive fan of Tales from Topographic Oceans I approve this video
Yay! Glad you liked it!
Welcome Back!
Great new video.
I was wondering about this topic and the 1st "Side Long Suite" and The Beatles Side 2 of Abbey Road. Although most consider it not a full *Side Long* suite, but Here Comes the Sun and "Because" being complete songs and not part of the rest of Side 2.
That being said, tracks like "The Ivory Gates of Dreams" and the entire "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" from Fates Warning would be among my favorites.
I am totally with you with Green Carnation's "Light of Day, Day of Darkness" although that's not a side long, but album-long piece.
Also just from last year, Toehider's "I Have Little to No Memory of These Memories."
great topic! and 1 I could go for making my own full (Top 20?) list sometime maybe.
Definitely a topic that can be delved into deeper and deeper, and you never quite know what you'll find.
Waiting for that top 20 list now 🤞🏿
incredebly underrated channel
If I could reward this comment with an extra ❤, I would have done so!
I didn't expect that! I had no idea you had such skills in editing! If you make more videos like those I can see your channel seriously taking off! It's so polished, well made, it looks great, feels great. I have to say, it puts a smile on my face to see your evolution.
Now for my favorite side-long epics. There's Supper's Ready, obviously, who can say no to that? There's De Futura by Magma, which is a bit short for a side-long epic, but the energy that comes from it is incredible. For more obscure ones there's The Funeral Plain, by Univers Zéro, it nails the atmosphere it's going for and it's just so intense it's like suffocating, peak goth rock for sure. Macbethia by Social Tension ranks for me also, maybe because I'm too into anime-sounding music, I don't find it minblowing, but it is awesome. Despite the production on the album, I like Ze słowem biegnę do ciebie by SBB, it's some absolutely great and energetic psychedelic/symphonic prog, with a stunning singer.
I do like album-long epics too, like the stuff Magma puts out, but that's a bit out of the subject.
(Also very happy to see you putting my music to good use, thank you for using it!)
This video was two weeks of non-stop work that I wholly enjoyed, so I'll be making more of this content for sure!
Always loving your more obscure recommendations. I really need to get into SBB, as they seem to be very beloved even outside of Poland (?)
And your music just spread across this video like whipped butter! You'll see it used a whole lot in the future.
Yay, Naomi's back!
How did youy not talk about CTTE? Damn bro thats the best side epic ever
Not over 20 minutes unfortunately... I had it in mind mind all along while making this video that that song just missed the mark.......
Interesting topic and an interesting video. I'm with you on Atom Heart Mother being a great album even though there isn't much love for it among PF fans. It's odd, it's psychedelic as much as prog, but very rewarding to play - except Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast which is just silly. Can you do a few more of these 'prog theory' videos, Naomi?
I agree with (almost) everything that you say here [that psychedelic breakfast had become one of my favourite introspective songs over the years].
And I'm actually currently working on *two* other videos like this one. Really excited!
I know you just can't listen to every music. But you let out In Held Twas In I by Procol Harum. Probably the first proper prog suite. And I think The Nice was also a precursor on that
Will have to check those out! (I actually don't know any...)
@@365DaysofProg is ok. Truly an outstanding genre
No mention of Close to the Edge ?
Unfortunately, it doesn't hit the required 20 minute mark.
Watching while having a curry 😉
Can't go wrong with a good curry
Promo SM ✔️
I disagree that Atom Heart Mother was the first Rock album to feature a side long piece of music. What about In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly from 1968?
Hey, that claim is definitely contestable, but I set the requirements to be of a song that goes on for more than 20 minutes. And while I have given Iron Butterfly its cameo in the video, it did not qualify for the category.
It seems to me that side 2 of Abbey Road kind of kicked this whole thing off.
Personally, I find that "Here Comes the Sun" and "Because" are unrelated to the suite at large. And I also chose to focus on prog suites, which I would quite classify Abbey Road side 2 to be.
@@365DaysofProg You make a solid point with "Here Comes the Sun," although I can't fully agree about "Because." Still, I think it's a crucially important recording in the history of the long rock suite that predates both "Atom Heart Mother" and "Valentyne Suite." Thanks.
Good video but you skipped the greatest side long suite of all time Yes Close to the edge
I sure did! (And that's because it doesn't reach the 20 minute mark, which I put as a requirement for appearing in this video :P)
