  • Ever felt like school wasn't built for your brain?To be 1 in 3 kids with ADHD, means there's a lot of us that need a better education. John German talks about ADHD and what it is like to have it in a demanding society with such a death grip on performance in the class room.
    John is a senior at Valencia High school. He has been in two plays, his first being The Diary of Anne Frank where he played the sullen dentist, Mr. Dussel and his second being Twelfth Night as a holy Priest and a shabby Captain. He has directed two DTASC (a drama competition) scenes both of them making it to finals and is currently working on his third scene. He worked backstage as a spotlight on last year’s spring musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. He is a thespian and has a true passion for the theatrical arts, both on stage and behind the scenes. He also enjoys drawing and painting as a small hobby for when he is stressed. This isn't his first nor last time on stage but he is hoping to give you a ted talk to change the way you view something very near and dear to him. He is grateful of all the love and support his family, friends, and girlfriend have given him. He really hopes you are excited and enjoy this TEDx event.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    I am a mother of a child with ADHD. I understand his struggle. I have fought VERY hard to get him to the point where he is at. A high schooler straight A student no medication. This is not bragging. This is showing what can be done when you get the support you need. We all support him and are there for him every step of the way. People do not see the importance of what the help does and the understanding. I support ADHD all the way. Your fight is my fight and as long as I am alive I will fight. Because I UNDERSTAND. My son does videos for his ADHD community. He wants to help those who do not get the help they so desperately need and don't get. Hang in there and never give up on yourself.

      Alison Kairuz yes it is bragging about no medication, and may make other sufferers or parents of other children think that you can go without medication. Symptoms are different for each individual and medication is sometimes needed. This is not to say that all the other things are not important like, structure in daily life etc. My son is so glad that he had medication as a child, he even said this when he was 19. He couldn’t read or write and was ready to go to a disable school. He is now finishing the highest level of school and will be going to University to be a teacher. All this would definately not have been possible without the medication.

      As an adhd sufferer, it doesn't sit right with me how you write "without medication". Do you also take a kids glasses away because YOU don't like how it looks? If your kid decides he can manage adhd without medication and without struggle... That's cool but it's not a special accomplishment for you that his adhd is mild enough to manage it without meds

      Don't measure his progress by his institutional grades. Measure his progress and support him by recognizing his creative problem solving. Schools typically don't teach this.

    I started drawing in school because I had to be doing something with my hands in order to process what the teacher was saying but I was always struggling because my art was "messy" and "unfinished" I never thought there was a connection!

My sketches are still a lil bit messy and make some art teachers hate :)) but my understanding of shape and composition has improved a lot. However it seems like I cannot graduate Graphic Design. It's very hard for me to do a long project on computer although I am good at coming up with new ideas. I'm struggling every day to do my graduation project... sometimes I am very disappointed about myself...

    I don't have ADHD(That I'm aware of) but I do have a mild intellectual disability in which I was diagnosed as a young boy. And the thing I noticed with both conditions is that they have so much in common. I like ADHD, have trouble focusing on important tasks, losing things and then realizing that the thing I lost is actually right in front of me. I'm very impulsive and do things without thinking and of course, I'm very fidgety and restless, and I am very forgetful. Unlike ADHD, however, I can't be medicated to help me through so most days is a battle for me, it is possible that I may have both as ID and ADHD can live together. ADHD and Intellectual Disability have so much in common more then people think, of course, everyone is different but I think if we work together we can be stronger as one.

    • @NiSE_Rafter
      @NiSE_Rafter Před 3 lety +3

      I think maybe a distinction for ADHD is that focus is not lacking but only possible in things that are interesting to people who have it. Hence why people with ADHD often have many different hobbies. Everytime they find something new and interesting they take a deep dive into it and learn everything they can, but then suddenly they find something else and deep dive into that too.

  • @user-vn9sh6hv8r
    @user-vn9sh6hv8r Před rokem

    I'm 46 and just coming to terms with the fact i probably have ADHD. And it never seemed abnormal because everyone i chose to associate with also probably had ADHD... that is, the artists, creatives, misfits, rule-breakers, and "over"-achievers, many of whom went off the rails rather than finding real-world success. My Dad included. I laughed in recognition at the "21% skip school repeatedly, and 45% get suspended". I, along wth many of my friends, got suspended *for* skipping school... despite being A students. My Dad was expelled from school age 14, in the 60s, and only ever did low-paid manual work, despite being creative, innovative, and free-thinking - too much so for manual jobs. And yet, i still don't see it as a "disorder" for those who have it, but a failure of society to accept difference, ingenuity, or people who don't draw within the lines... and who don't do well with being told what to do.
    Appreciate the talk, and sharing your story. It takes some guts to do so, so thank you. 🙏

      No, there's actually fundamental differences between ADHD brains and 'normal' brains and while certain supplements and techniques can help, ADHD doesn't 'come and go' because of a B vitamin deficiency. If that was the case, I should not have it because I have many foods and energy drinks that are filled with them, and without my meds/techniques, it's pretty bad.
