Honestly, I'd feel bad for them. I really wanted to play this mission but looking back at this gameplay, I can see that the game mechanics were a bit off and clunky and the hacking is quite strange. Could you imagine having to constantly switch the object you wanted to hack every single time in the weapon wheel instead of one single button? It'd get old and annoying in a tense gun fight or a heated car chase. Also, the game footage shown here is on a high-tech state-of-the-art PC that is running it on Ultra High settings in 1080p at about 40-50 frames per second. The game is great where it is right now, but some things, like the violence probability meter or this particular mission, should have stayed in my opinion.
Ya sure, things like that, but I mean the other things, like how there are news things about the storm, and there is increased wind because of it, and the cans blowing in the wind. Also people running to grab people out of cars, and the guy screaming about his wife, all these things were supposed to be dynamic. Imagine if every time you used the traffic light hack, people would scream and run to go help people, it would make the world feel so much more real and full of life. Now that's the game I want to play.

It has. This version is what I'm playing, its the complete edition. You're not going to be able to match the scenes perfectly and a few things have been removed, but the game does look like this now. I went to the same spot and they only removed a manhole cover which produces the smoke. There is one on the other side that does smoke. The sign also does not have the blue animation behind the letters, but I think that was a style choice as there are many signs in the same that see animated so removing it would not improve frames. The only major difference is interior lighting. Idk what they did, changed bloom or what, but I think the trailer is using a filter. Lighting as I'm aware is an engine thing and cannot just be reconfigured to look like another engine unless you rebuild how the entire lighting system works, different reflections, refractions, polygon shading and all that fun stuff.

The explosion, the way the NPCs interact with each other, the way the NPC react to something (like this guys girlfriend that got shot in the car which killed her instantly), the way Aiden picks up the gun from his taken down enemy, the cutscenes that switch from cutscene to actual gameplay, the takedowns, the gun fight, everything in this demo was so perfect. The visuals aswell. Ubisoft massively fucked this game up. Don't get me wrong, the released game is still amazing but... I wish we got that version of Watch Dogs. This could've been my favorite game whatsoever!

Well, considering that many of Ubisoft's last releases do have a big inspiration on technology, the "digital shadow" part does make much sense. Not to mention that the Assassin's Creed's world and Watch_Dogs' seem to be in the same universe, which would prove the digital shadow that Ubisoft casts

I don't think they will. This game was slotted for current gen and next while The Division was never slotted for current consoles. Although Ubisoft could easily prove me wrong.
This is all proof that Ubisoft has awesome ideas, but they don't have expectation management. All of the effort that was put into making this demo (yes, it was a real playable thing) could have been applied to the whole game.
Every WD1 demo was scripted however it was still playable. I recall there being an area that was way limited, and you couldn't go out far into areas like Pawnee. Possibly, at that stage of development, Pawnee doesn't exist. There are numerous versions of the E3 2012 demo's, and E3 2013 also had playable demos.
6:49 this sort of interaction between NPC's is far too complex. I seriously doubt that this is any sort of representation of what the game will be like. This demo was definitely pre-rendered.
Oh yeah. Way downgraded. Even at max graphics, I dare say even GTA IV (2008) looks better. And unless you have a monster rig, you ain't playing this game at max settings. Needs more optimization for sure.
Manoman What are you smoking? Every single graphics option is available to both AMD and Nvidia. why are you speaking such ignorance? I own both AMD 290x and Nvidia GTX780ti they both play the game the damn same, maxed graphics. Only difference is Nvidia cards can choose TXAA and AMD cards can't. That doesnt matter though because TXAA is shit makes the game all blurry. MSAA looks better anyway, so i just use that whether I'm on my NVIDIA pc or my AMD pc. I have a full Nvidia/INTEL PC in my living room hooked up to my 55" TV, and an AMD/INTEL PC in a separate room hooked up to a 27" 2560x1440 monitor. And to the point about the downgraded graphics. Its is WITHOUT A DOUBT downgraded from this. Lighting,weather, animation,particles,reflections,explosions and ESPECIALLY CHARACTER FACE ANIMATIONS AND DETAIL are all lowered from this demo. That being said the game looks stunning maxed out@1440P over all I'm happy with the visuals but upset with them for being misleading.
Manoman i've watched a video a friend uploaded and he had a high end PC with a top notch nvidia video card. It does not look as good as this first gameplay video. But I understand developers have to make changes and sacrifices to make deadlines. It's just kind of shitty. I wish they'd under promise and over deliver instead.

This demo is still amazing to this day. damn you Ubisoft this could have been one of the greatest games of all time despite the gameplay, atmosphere, graphics and the presentation it had. Ubisoft pulled one of the biggest switcheroos in gaming history especially since it's a new IP that looks fantastic. After the game got released well....you know the story.

Now the game itself is alright, I'd put the graphics at somewhere between GTA IV and V. After playing on Ultra on PC and watching this, the only major differences in graphics is the amount of depth of field during normal gameplay and the fog on the street. At nighttime in the rain, the retail version looks pretty close to this for me.
Don't get me wrong, the pre-release version still looks better, but it's not like they did a Dark Souls 2 downgrade. It's slight at best. Watch Dogs just doesn't look great in the daytime. I imagine the pre-release version would have been the same.
d3nyd Definitely, it seems to me like game devs are opting more for a more orange and yellow day rather than a white one, take a look at Infamous Second Son, went from the bright white day to orange-ish, graphics wise nothing changed besides the lighting. E3 2012 for WD definitely looks better, even if it's ever so slight, that's not to say the final game isn't jaw dropping as well.
So where are those peoples who said "RIP GTA"? Back before game was released after E3 gameplay was launched they kept saying that GTA is dead and Watch Dogs is awesome. Now... They got the truth on their faces.

I agree. Watch Dogs 1 didn't live up to the hype, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm super hyped for Watch Dogs 2. I have a feeling Ubisoft listened to the feedback they got from the first one and are going to massively improve it. I feel like the squeal is going to be the Assassin's Creed 2 of the Watch Dogs series.
Yes I know I'm few years late, it's Aiden Pearce and both are the same person in the demo and final game They had to change the face due to "licensing" issues, someone at ubisoft from the legal department thought that the older model looks like some sort of real life actor so they changed it
I actually think this game is fun as hell. I enjoy the story missions, the side missions have a sense of freedom to it. And the hacking abilities are efficient and fun to use. People seem to hate on this game because of their high expectations. did this game live up to the hype? Not really. But it's still a strong title and u hope they expand on it in the future. 8.5/10 for me. :)
The expectations didn't come from nowhere, they came from Ubisoft selling a spectacular looking promise in 2012, only to nerf it horribly a year or two later at release, and it never reached the level promised by this promo.
Yeah, but that wouldn't be possible with today's hardware. I think it'll take at least 5 years until an open world game looks as good as this trailer and runs ok. That's if the CPU development doesn't keep slowing even more down. I really think CPUs are what's holding things back the most these days.

Now that Unreal Engine 5 is out, I wonder if Ubisoft will be able to remake the first game and include all the QoL improvements, visuals, mechanics and everything the e3 demo showcased.
On a technical level, the shadowing, lighting and volumetric fog do look better, but the art style is a lot more mundane and there arent as many details as WD2 from what i have seen. Fingers crossed that WD2 doesnt get a downgrade tho
+AFGuidesHD they dropped/reduced a lot of the minor details like RainFX, particles systems etc. but it's still a good game. I love the Ubisoft formula of exploring, taking down bases, etc.
One of my small annoyances is in this he sounds pretty normal but in the newest trailer, he's undergone the Batman effect. Maybe just once I want a main character not to sound like a blender full of rocks.
This is a textbook example of how a vertical slice designed to market a game and the actual game can differ so drastically. The actual game was fun but it was nowhere near as technically impressive as this trailer made it out to be.
Big differences I notice here(even after mods): > NPC's interact more naturally and with some kind of instinct. Note the people helping those out of the car and the heartbroken driver trying to wake up his girlfriend. > Gas station fire, it's HUGE and ends in a very satisfying explosion. The version we have now even after all the mods is still minimal and with no explosion like this. We just get the explosion sound, sparks and small flames. > Traffic collision: Far more cars involved. > This was a mission entierly cut from the game. > The rain looks nicer, it's more dense. There's rain dripping from the edges of objects such as the overhead section at the front of the theatre. > Coat physics, there's much more fluidity and freedom to the coats allowed area of movement. After the coat physics mod is installed, we still only get the lower flaps moving but even that seems pre-animated. > Aiden has slightly more snap to his character.

No it wasn't. It ran on a rig less capable than today's PC/PS5/XSX. It has no ray tracing, just ahead of vfx shaders and gameplay mechanics. Near future titles will be far more impressive than this example. Don't forget, the order 1886 is still the most impressive showcase ever showed in real-time in terms of assets, character polygons and VFX and that ran on a base PS4.

Im really satisfied with tthe game so far after playing it for 10 hours on the PC. Never got close to being bored once. The multiplayer was also really neat! I loved the tailing mode where you simply stalk other players without them knowing. I see alot of great upgrades in the released current verison in the game in comparison with this 2012 gameplay, I don't see why they didn't keep that focus aim though? It looks really cool! I don't think it has with graphical limitatons to do, not even on the XBOX ONE and PS4. Anways to sum it up I've had an awesome experience so far and the story has been mindblowing. Much better then expected.
We finally have the tech to actually be able to plat this game …Ubisoft should make a remastered version of this game and name it Watchdogs E3 edition..

Now that I look at this again, this demo didn't look too graphically impressive either. It just had some nice rain and reflections that made things look better than they actually are. Look at the brief scenes in the beginning of this video that show the game when things aren't wet and shiny. It looks just as bland as it does in current videos.
Its not the graphics people are actually complaining about, its the bloom effect, and that is still active on PC, and the shadows of people, is actually there on this Demo aswell as on the PC:) but they didnt choose right on the consoles, higer resulution instead of shadows, thats the crap :/ but since I'm on PC, I guess I won't buy it for my PS4 afterall:P
The city still feels more alive imo. The people talking and the wind blowing the trees, and when the incident happens, the people around try to help and rescue the injured. None of this happens in the final version if i recall correctly.

I personally think that this will be the case in the final game, that the version shown in paris was a dumbed down version to make the retail look more like the E3 demo :)

Well, considering that many of Ubisoft's last releases do have a big inspiration on technology, the "digital shadow" part does make much sense.
Not to mention that the Assassin's Creed's world and Watch_Dogs' seem to be in the same universe, which would prove the digital shadow that Ubisoft casts

This is all proof that Ubisoft has awesome ideas, but they don't have expectation management. All of the effort that was put into making this demo (yes, it was a real playable thing) could have been applied to the whole game.

Every WD1 demo was scripted however it was still playable. I recall there being an area that was way limited, and you couldn't go out far into areas like Pawnee. Possibly, at that stage of development, Pawnee doesn't exist. There are numerous versions of the E3 2012 demo's, and E3 2013 also had playable demos.

Manoman What are you smoking? Every single graphics option is available to both AMD and Nvidia. why are you speaking such ignorance? I own both AMD 290x and Nvidia GTX780ti they both play the game the damn same, maxed graphics. Only difference is Nvidia cards can choose TXAA and AMD cards can't. That doesnt matter though because TXAA is shit makes the game all blurry. MSAA looks better anyway, so i just use that whether I'm on my NVIDIA pc or my AMD pc. I have a full Nvidia/INTEL PC in my living room hooked up to my 55" TV, and an AMD/INTEL PC in a separate room hooked up to a 27" 2560x1440 monitor. And to the point about the downgraded graphics. Its is WITHOUT A DOUBT downgraded from this. Lighting,weather, animation,particles,reflections,explosions and ESPECIALLY CHARACTER FACE ANIMATIONS AND DETAIL are all lowered from this demo. That being said the game looks stunning maxed out@1440P over all I'm happy with the visuals but upset with them for being misleading.
Manoman i've watched a video a friend uploaded and he had a high end PC with a top notch nvidia video card. It does not look as good as this first gameplay video. But I understand developers have to make changes and sacrifices to make deadlines. It's just kind of shitty. I wish they'd under promise and over deliver instead.

This demo is still amazing to this day. damn you Ubisoft this could have been one of the greatest games of all time despite the gameplay, atmosphere, graphics and the presentation it had. Ubisoft pulled one of the biggest switcheroos in gaming history especially since it's a new IP that looks fantastic. After the game got released well....you know the story.

Yeah, GTA V needed a bit of touching up, but it was bounds and leaps better than this game. At least Rockstar didn't lie.
After playing on Ultra on PC and watching this, the only major differences in graphics is the amount of depth of field during normal gameplay and the fog on the street. At nighttime in the rain, the retail version looks pretty close to this for me.

Don't get me wrong, the pre-release version still looks better, but it's not like they did a Dark Souls 2 downgrade. It's slight at best. Watch Dogs just doesn't look great in the daytime. I imagine the pre-release version would have been the same.
d3nyd Definitely, it seems to me like game devs are opting more for a more orange and yellow day rather than a white one, take a look at Infamous Second Son, went from the bright white day to orange-ish, graphics wise nothing changed besides the lighting. E3 2012 for WD definitely looks better, even if it's ever so slight, that's not to say the final game isn't jaw dropping as well.

I agree. Watch Dogs 1 didn't live up to the hype, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm super hyped for Watch Dogs 2. I have a feeling Ubisoft listened to the feedback they got from the first one and are going to massively improve it. I feel like the squeal is going to be the Assassin's Creed 2 of the Watch Dogs series.

I actually think this game is fun as hell. I enjoy the story missions, the side missions have a sense of freedom to it. And the hacking abilities are efficient and fun to use. People seem to hate on this game because of their high expectations. did this game live up to the hype? Not really. But it's still a strong title and u hope they expand on it in the future. 8.5/10 for me. :)
The expectations didn't come from nowhere, they came from Ubisoft selling a spectacular looking promise in 2012, only to nerf it horribly a year or two later at release, and it never reached the level promised by this promo.
I really wish that the game looked this great and performed like it does right now. It would be the definition of next gen.
Yeah, but that wouldn't be possible with today's hardware. I think it'll take at least 5 years until an open world game looks as good as this trailer and runs ok. That's if the CPU development doesn't keep slowing even more down. I really think CPUs are what's holding things back the most these days.

On a technical level, the shadowing, lighting and volumetric fog do look better, but the art style is a lot more mundane and there arent as many details as WD2 from what i have seen. Fingers crossed that WD2 doesnt get a downgrade tho

This is a textbook example of how a vertical slice designed to market a game and the actual game can differ so drastically. The actual game was fun but it was nowhere near as technically impressive as this trailer made it out to be.
Big differences I notice here(even after mods):
> NPC's interact more naturally and with some kind of instinct. Note the people helping those out of the car and the heartbroken driver trying to wake up his girlfriend.
> Gas station fire, it's HUGE and ends in a very satisfying explosion. The version we have now even after all the mods is still minimal and with no explosion like this. We just get the explosion sound, sparks and small flames.
> Traffic collision: Far more cars involved.
> This was a mission entierly cut from the game.
> The rain looks nicer, it's more dense. There's rain dripping from the edges of objects such as the overhead section at the front of the theatre.
> Coat physics, there's much more fluidity and freedom to the coats allowed area of movement. After the coat physics mod is installed, we still only get the lower flaps moving but even that seems pre-animated.

This demo was the last time I ever believed a game developer, thanks for shaking the faith and trust of every single video game consumer in the world Ubisoft 👍.
Part of me feels like this was pre-rendered. Because only recently are we seing games (like RDR2) even come close to this level of visual fidelity.
No it wasn't. It ran on a rig less capable than today's PC/PS5/XSX. It has no ray tracing, just ahead of vfx shaders and gameplay mechanics. Near future titles will be far more impressive than this example. Don't forget, the order 1886 is still the most impressive showcase ever showed in real-time in terms of assets, character polygons and VFX and that ran on a base PS4.
If they could give of this for next gen, I’d give them another shot. This game is merely perfect on paper.
Give us a remake of this game for PS5, Xbox series, and PC. I'd buy it.

Im really satisfied with tthe game so far after playing it for 10 hours on the PC. Never got close to being bored once. The multiplayer was also really neat! I loved the tailing mode where you simply stalk other players without them knowing. I see alot of great upgrades in the released current verison in the game in comparison with this 2012 gameplay, I don't see why they didn't keep that focus aim though? It looks really cool! I don't think it has with graphical limitatons to do, not even on the XBOX ONE and PS4. Anways to sum it up I've had an awesome experience so far and the story has been mindblowing. Much better then expected.

Now that I look at this again, this demo didn't look too graphically impressive either. It just had some nice rain and reflections that made things look better than they actually are. Look at the brief scenes in the beginning of this video that show the game when things aren't wet and shiny. It looks just as bland as it does in current videos.
Its not the graphics people are actually complaining about, its the bloom effect, and that is still active on PC, and the shadows of people, is actually there on this Demo aswell as on the PC:) but they didnt choose right on the consoles, higer resulution instead of shadows, thats the crap :/ but since I'm on PC, I guess I won't buy it for my PS4 afterall:P
The city still feels more alive imo. The people talking and the wind blowing the trees, and when the incident happens, the people around try to help and rescue the injured. None of this happens in the final version if i recall correctly.
