  • Don't feel bad if you decide to get rid of some plants that you no longer enjoy. You can give them away or sometimes THROWING them out is a huge stress reliever as well.

    Great topic, Jeff. I have to constantly remind myself that my hobby is *growing* houseplants (not Buying, not Rescuing). We all have a finite amount of time/energy and what you devote to triaging one plant takes away from another that's really going to benefit from that care. Love how practical and eco-conscious you are: using what you have. Thank you for your videos.

    One of my covid lockdown projects was learning to grow cacti from seed. I planted over 1000 seeds (!) and managed to get around 300 baby cacti. When they are tiny that's manageable, but as they grew over the next couple years I had to "cull the herd" periodically. Like you, I find the process kind of therapeutic. I now have about 100 of my "covid cacti" left and they are around golf ball sized. Cacti require patience lol. I really enjoy your channel 😀

    I guess I’m one of those who feel very guilty of disposing of plants. But I’m happy to hear that plant supposed to make you happy and there’s a lot of plants that I own that don’t and gets me frustrated. So thank you for the video. I’m encouraged now to just feel happy with the ones that are doing good. And tossing out those high maintenance ones.

    This time of year, a lot of my houseplants will start migrating outside for Summer Camp. Anything that I've been contemplating tossing out, definitely will go outside for the Summer. At the end of Summer, I will decide who can come back inside, who will be given away, and who will go to the trash!

    Xlnt Jeff! Yes it's OK to throw away (or pop into your outdoor garden like I do) or give it away. Your mental & physical health is far more important than a plant! Plants should bring us joy not stress, so cutting down or cutting out should always be an option.

    I have zero problems binning plants. My collection isn't nearly as big (I'm at about 60 or so right now and I give them the best care possible. Pests haven't been a huge issue for me outside of certain species of Alocasia. I've been honing in on the plants give me the most joy (Monstera, Philos, Syngonium, Pothos, Aglaonema) and have either given away or trashed the problem plants. Life is so much better this way.

    • @JustJ0nathan
      @JustJ0nathan Před 2 měsíci +1

      I love this - honing in on the plants that give you the most joy. I’ve been doing this gradually over the past couple of years. I’ve gotten my collection down to a dozen plants now, but each of them have consistently provided me with joy over the years I’ve owned them. The plants I felt lukewarm about I either gave away or trashed.

      How many humidifiers do you have for all your plants?? I find that if you just take them and spray the leaves with whatever you use for pests, and give them fresh soil maybe that they will recover. But if you choose to discard them, do that. I have all my plants in leca and I have O pests. I never keep a new plant in the house until I remove all the soil it was in. Quite often the soil is loaded with fungus nat eggs and that's a BIG PROBLEM not only for you but for ALL YOUR PLANTS. THANKS😅

    So impressed with the M. deliciosa in the jar!...just love those roots & leaves 💚. My late elderly neighbour (not a great lover of houseplants) got frustrated and dumped a potted Monstera in his back garden in a North facing corner of his house wall, and it survived many British (London) Winters, and its adventitious roots 'cemented' themslves into the brickwork! I think it was trying to get to the roof for more light :)

    I would advise against giving plants with thrips away. People who have not had them before might underestimate them and then it would ruin the plants that they already owned as well.
    Same for root mealybugs, though they are much slower in causing damage. When water is shared between plants they will be a lot of work to get rid of.
    As for other pests it would be more manageable if the new owner isolates them until all pests are eradicated.
