    For me, the most important tip and the one that is almost always overlooked is, know yourself! What kind of plant parent do you want/need to be? Are you retired and have plenty of time to devote to plant care, or are you a single mum with 3 children working full time? Are you a helicopter plant parent who loves to tend to your plants daily, or are you looking for something that looks good with minimal care? Do you like to take nice long vacations several times a year, or is your home your staycation destination? Realistically, how much time, energy, and money do you want to put into plant care? Knowing who you are and what you're able to achieve puts everything else into focus.

    I find the whole Fungus Gnat issue interesting. I grew up in a home with soil plants and not a bug in sight. I'm in my 50's and have had plants since moving out of home in soil and no issue. The Fungus Gnat plague seems to have appeared in the last 6 years or so which means something has changed in the production of the soil. I went semi hydro to and no more FG

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Might not have something to do with the production but with the storage of these bags of soil .... they are always moist & have no airflow ... maybe they used to take better care :)

    🐈 New to your channel but really enjoying your common sense approach to plant care. I got started with succulents years ago but thanks to being able to rent a space for my photo studio with great SW windows I’m now into aroids. Spent the last 2 years just figuring out the garden variety tropicals and now trying the fancier stuff. LOVE your moss pole videos, I’m making my own now and plan to transition everything that climbs to them. Being able to keep them compact and use lights really opens up the possibilities of what I can keep at home too. I also strongly prefer the look of growing them as displays with a definite front side as you do.
    Anyway, just want to say that I enjoy your content, and congrats on taking it full time. I strongly suggest selling merch. T-shirts featuring your cat, whatever! Lots of people who do CZcams full time find that to really be helpful. Your audience wants to see you succeed.

    Finally someone who really explains why its so important to have the perfekt conditions for plants, this is why i had a lot of problems with so many plants
    In germany, especially in winter and especially in my flat i just dont get a lot of light and heat, so plants like alocasias just will not thrive here, even though i LOVE them, i had to get rid of all of them, now i only have plants where i know, they will live and thrive even in the colder months
    Also, i work in a garden center and when people ask me how to care for a plant, oh boy, they are overwhelmed when i ask them, well, how are your conditions, how is the light, is it warm, is it cold, how far from a window is it standing and so on
    And you wont believe how many people come in and ask me which plants can live in room with NO windows... Well.. Fakeplants

    • @lesliebegamkenefic5961
      @lesliebegamkenefic5961 Před 2 měsíci +5

      THATS WHY they make grow lights ✨️, my apartment has 0 natural light so EVERYTHING in my apartment is grown with assistance of good, bright grow lights! It looks like day in my apartment 15-16 hours a day. My plants are chosen by my conditions in my place. Lots of natural humidity ( no use for humidifiers)! Living in Texas, USA , close to ocean, thus lots of humidity even though I run my A/C 24 7

    • @lesliebegamkenefic5961
      @lesliebegamkenefic5961 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Try great grow lights, my apartment has 0 natural light & my alocasias & other humid, warm loving plants thrive

      @VinaSash Před 2 měsíci +1

      I have grow lights too, but how i already said, its also too cold in my flat during the colder month, i have very poor isolation, so heat just literally goes right out
      Alsocasias do not want anything under 17° celsius or they will go dormant and i dont like that

    • @lesliebegamkenefic5961
      @lesliebegamkenefic5961 Před 2 měsíci +1

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Yes !! Conditions are so important to understand first !!! But people want that 'instagrammable' outcome so they often just go for the plants that look good rather than the ones that suit but are not willing to put in the effort !! And the question regarding plants in rooms without windows .... I get that so often :D haha

    Excellent Jan & Brad. I think the first time conditions really hit home for me was when I shifted into a totally different style of house as well. I moved from a modern sun drenched, well insulated house to an old house with high ceilings not bad light but definitely not as well insulated. The plants I had in the modern house & were thriving absolutely hated their new home so I had to make adjustments in their placements & buy grow lights to get everything back on an even keel. Big learning curve 😂😂

      I moved in the same way late summer/early fall last year. My plants reacted in the opposite way though. They love my 100+ yr old house! Good points. I would also say don’t be afraid of failure and try something. For example, for years my mother told me alocasias are impossible and then one day 3 years ago I bought one and had success and another and another. I realized it liked the conditions of my office, not too direct sunlight but indirect light. In fact alocasias are easy care plants for me like pothos. One of my black velvets went dormant and died last season and that was because I didn’t maintain the “heat” conditions it required in that room.

    Thanks Jan and Brad 💙I'm in the UK and use Liquid Gold which you can buy through Soil Ninja (who do amazing substrates too). Every now and then I also use Great White mycorrhizae but you can get that everywhere (works wonders but don't fertilise your plants at the same time as the fungi need to grow first).

    I always research the plants natural habitat and conditions. It makes all the difference!! I also (personally) dont like bark in plants. I was just telling a friend that I feel like that's where a lot of mold and gnat issues start. 🤷‍♀️

    The last year I seriously started with carniverous plants and it made me learn one important thing. All nepenthes species come from the tropics but they need 3 different temperature regimes. It is based on elevation, even in the tropics there are high mountains with snow. And highland species need wwarm days and a temperature drop at night to survive longtime ( not freezing ), lowland/sealevel species need hot day and night. This must be the same for other species, so could explain why some philodendron thrive and others dont in the same home.
    Poor Brad, you see him looking up annoyed when you start waving your hands around disturbing his sleep :)

    Canadian here, a good alternative for GT foliage Focus (although available through certain suppliers) is Superthrive (formerly dynagrow) foliage pro. It’s also high nitrogen and balanced and can be used with semi-hydro. I haven’t found an alternative to GT clonex so I just seek that one out. 🐈

    Thanks SPG , I’m 100% agreeing with you.
    I personally always change my nutrient. I only use organic nutrient, so I try to vary as much as possible, in order to give a big variety of nutrients. I also make some nutrients myself, like nettle or fern purin. The only problem is that I’m living in a apartment, and it stinks 😂😢😅
    Last thing: I’m using EM, and I try to create a living soil for my plants, so I only use rainwater (which is not evident during the summertime), to avoid chlorine.

    • @lesliebegamkenefic5961
      @lesliebegamkenefic5961 Před 2 měsíci +1

      If you let your tap water sit 48 hours most of chlorine will disapate, at least in my place. I check chlorine levels with pool water tester & works BEAUTIFULLY

  • @GenePolice1
    @GenePolice1 Před 2 měsíci

    I completely agree about the store bought potting mix, but unfortunately, where I am, it's really hard to get my hands on good quality substrates like sphagnum moss, horticultural Charcoal, and even chunkier perlite (all I've been able to find is the super fine, nearly powder stuff) without paying an absolute premium for them.
    So instead of buying gnat infested box store varieties, I've been using a pre-made soil mix from Very Plants, and so far, it's been great.
