And yet also the most savage. She made it horribly, crystal clear how she was/had always been permanently alienated from him.
Aside from the times he beat her
the worst she can say is no.
Her abusive husband asked her to commit suicide with him. My "no" would have been a lot more forceful (and rude) than her refusal was.

I think he's delusional to some degree, he loves her so much but she never loved him back, and deep down he knew this and got frustrated over the years.

As someone who considered this dude an asshole for the entirety up until now, this was really sad to be honest.

And she might've started hating him AFTER he became abusive, we don't know.

A remarkable scene that shows Buntaro is as much a casualty of ritual and tradition as Mariko. He offers her the (false) dignity of joining him in death, all wrapped in the beautiful solemnity, the principled courtesy of the tea ceremony --- completely missing his "target" in ways his martial skills would never allow; he cannot possess Mariko in life, so he chooses to possess her in death. Every hour of every day, Mariko operates within ritual's tight ambit, but she has (quietly) seen beyond this, learning to value her own life, choosing Anjin, and exercising a degree of power Buntaro can only dream of. In this scene, she is freer than Buntaro and knows it.
The disrespect for her bloodline that has been passed onto their son...he deserves nothing.
That’s one shallow way to see things. I myself feel bad for them both.

I honestly do feel bad for buntaro, but it doesn't change the fact he brought this on himself for everything he did to mariko. so it's a little hard to say he didn't have it coming.
It’s much more complex than that.
Her father threw Japan into conflict, and his actions destroyed the peace that the previous Taiko worked hard for. There’s a very large chance that Buntaro has fought in battles that were caused by her father’s actions.
He doesn’t dislike her, although he does seem to truly disdain her lineage (common at the time in Japan; you died for your family’s sins). Her marriage to him has become a source of scorn: his wife is the daughter of *that man*. But he likes her, so won’t let her kill herself. She’s cold to him, so being the emotionally repressed man that he is, he responds violently and beats her. However, the show never hints that he has sexually abused her, which means he values her honour. He doesn’t know how to reach her, so he’s very jealous that Blackthorne has succeeded easily where he has failed repeatedly.
Mariko has had to endure his harsh treatment, but I don’t think she has ever tried to warm up to him, even when he was putting in effort. She’s so guilt-stricken by her father’s crimes that all she wants to do is die.
Buntaro is a super interesting character, one of the best in the show. Fiercely loyal, yet emotionally immature; really strong yet strangely shaky; good son, good vassal and soldier, trash husband. He’s watching his world fall apart. In the course of the show, his brother-in-law, nephew, and father have all died. He himself was left for dead and barely survived. Man had been through a lot.
A perfect specimen for the human condition. You win some, you lose some. Whatever happens at the end of the journey, the goal that is set at the very beginning and every step taken from that day on should be the finding of thy self. Everything else is sunset and sunrise, the waves crashing to the shore, the falling of leaves and the dew in a rose's petals.@@emmanuela7528
@emmanuela7528 dude this should be a top comment not hidden in reply. It explains a lot of the mixed feelings towards him that I have. How shitty he's been to mariko and yet I can't shake the sadness that I feel for him.
@@emmanuela7528 That is a very good explanation. I agree with you, but to me it still doesn't justify the bad things he's done to her, and even fuji. There is pity for him, even if mariko was icy towards him as a result.

In fairness we don't know what kind of husband he has been either......in the show he comes off as a serious hothead and she seems straight up afraid once he's drunk.....
He's not a hot head, he was just tormented by his relationship with Mariko, The true hot heads are Fuji's husband and Toranaga's son.
The show doesn't give us a balanced perspective, it doesn't show us *how* Mariko has been emotionally tormenting Buntaro all these years, but always makes sure to beat us over the head with how violent and agresssive he is with her.

FACTS! Buntaro is a great warrior who survived death and then has to sleep in the same house as the man his wife had an affair with. On top of the fact his wife hates him for decisions her father made. And you can see him constantly reaching for her but she "gives him nothing". As a viewer you sit there and ask "what did he do to deserve this?".
What do you expect from an arrange marriage where women have no say in who they are expected to spend the rest of their lives with and marry complete strangers
