Maceo play that horn! I was 9 years old at a James Brown concert 1971 in New Orleans, LA with my parents. I will always remember James Brown saying Maceo blown that horn! He was outstanding and extraordinary! A memorable moment for me with the 2 people that loved me unconditionally!!!!❤🎉
I don't care what anyone else says, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker and Pee Wee Ellis will always be THEE GREATEST HORN SECTION TO EVER PLAY MUSIC.......PERIOD!!!!
I don't disagree, but the Tower of Power horns belong in the conversation, as well.
T. O. P can certainly be in the conversation of force and power but when it comes to style, feeling and groove, no contest. The JB's had set the standard. Soul power, baby!
We need a Maceo/TOP love twin bill!
I love 💕 Tower of Power, the Memphis Horns, Earth, Wind & Fire horns, Chicago, Cameo and Brass Construction too, but no horns section in the history of the world even comes close to the Mighty JBs. That's because, with the leadership and direction of the Legendary James Brown, the JBs literally INVENTED Funk.
Though Fred Wrsley, Maceo and Pee Wee were trained horn players, James Brown taught them how to forget about the horn parts of a song and instead, make the horns an intricate part of the groove.
The JBs were not the accompaniment of the groove.... THEY WERE THE GROOVE ITSELF!
I don't know about that. Tower of Power is pretty amazing man.
I was at this concert. Unforgettable.
RIP Mr. Ellis.
What year was the concert?
@@connorkimbler7284 The Shows featured on the album and the video were April 12,13, and 14, 1994 I believe.
Omg... i envy u...
me too. 3 hours dancing.
When I hear those horns God made them so wonderful and the rest of the band sound so good
Fred, Pee wee, and Maceo graduated from James Brown University!!!! These cats enhanced James brown music so much. They are pioneers of what we call Funk today. Salute to the brothers.
PS that brother on the bass is a bad ass man !!!!!
HE’S A BAD MAN !
One Bad Fother Mucker
Brother, you are RIGHT ON THE MONEY with this comment. Fred Wesley came out of the Army expecting to go to New York and become a Jazz trombonist, but he was broke and needed work so a friend (Pee Wee Ellis) told him that James Brown was hiring. Fred auditioned for The Godfather and basically thought the man was insane. He said James Brown didn't understand the structure of music and Fred really wasn't happy about the idea of playing the kinda groove melodies that JB created, but he needed the work so he stayed. Well, the rest is history. James Brown proved to be a GENIUS and created a whole new formula for music (The One), where the band hit its hardest notes on the ONE count of the groove and now we have a new world order.
But you already knew this. I know you knew this because your comment reflects the love and loyalty you have for James Brown and his Funky Discliples.
There's only one thing I disagree with in your comment and I hope you will edit it for me:
Since Pee Wee Ellis is the one of the most legendary sax players to ever live and was the man that introduced Fred Wesley to James Brown and Maceo, I think you will agree that we must honor his name by Capitalizing the "P" and the "W". Right?
Brother, you are a real one. Stay Funky.
What was it called back then?
He is killing on that bass
Sho is, nothing but pocket!!
Perfect groove. Never overplayed. Amazing on the bridge. The way he plays relative to the snare is a revelation to me.
Jerry Preston
His rent must have been due coz that bassline is fire
Original funk, welcome to school
Maceo Parker is the best Sax player ever. Give that man his flowers now!!!
I would *COMPLIMENT* him but you used the gen z term flowers and so I will ignore AND shame you
@@SillyGoose2024 Imagine thinking that the “term” flowers is something new
Holy cr*p, how is this the first time I've ever seen this? I've just received a bit of educating here... Everything about this performance is absolutely spot on!!!
One of the coolest bass lines I've listened to in my 42 years on this planet. RESPECT!
fact!
YES!
And amazing bass player!
Check out George Benson’s live performance of On Broadway at the Cafe Wha! Great bass
czcams.com/video/6jdH1T8hc9c/video.html
Bass Player poured a whole bottle of funky sauce on this.
NOW THIS IS THE REAL DEAL HERE
Man I watch this once a week at least. The bass work before the horns come in is some of the best I've ever heard. Such careful attention to note length, articulation, and space. About as good as it gets.
right on !
All the “soulless” stuff out there these days, have got nothing on this… These cats are the real deal.
Ass kicking MoFos
Right
Agree every word!
Man I love Maceo and Fred Wesley! These legends played for James Brown and for Parliament-Fukadelic
I stand in awe about Preston finding ways to play that 8 bar groove in endless nuances, giving the ILLUSION of stubborn repetition and a fireworks of ideas and development at the same time.
Slap dat Bass!
Crack that snare!
Kick it!
THE RHYTHM is driving this band.
Blimey, if you ain’t bobbing your head after the opening 5 seconds then I’m afraid you’re dead !! DoF ❤️🙏🏼🎶 xx
I don’t have much left to shake, but I shook EVERTHING that I had! Great groove.
Que c'est bon, j'ai téléchargé 18 secondes de cette musique pour la sonnerie d'appel de mon smarthphone. Bravo Maceo, Fred et tous les musiciens👍👍👍
Y'all know that Fred Wesley could've gone on for like another 10 minutes, right? And I would've love every second of it.
The solo of Fred.... pure Funck. Pure genius. Pure joy
Maceo dropping a HEAVY dose of funk.
Jerry Preston on bass ....good go
Man, Jerry is funky as hell
FUNK Not funky please😉💚🍃💋
The bass work and guitar work is stellar 🔥🔥🔥
This great rhytm is a whole era of a great musicians, funk masters. Cool thing is, that only we understand the flavour of this brilliant music, not nowadays digital generation.
I saw him and this amazing group of musicians at the Hard Rock in Vegas and I was shocked at how few people were there. I was watching a legend amongst legends, playing the funkiest beautiful "happy music" and the place was almost empty. To his credit he didn't miss a beat or mail it in. One of the best performances I've ever seen
S et zdddzzez s s#teeter f*Reed à Azarenka ddass did & & awesome
OMG, you are sooo right. People have no real understanding of just how incredible and how original these musicians were. They pack auditoriums and stadiums for copycat acts like Beyonce' and Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift and Cardi B., yet overlook the very foundation of music when they fail to attend these amazing concerts.
They have no idea that these were the musicians that honed their craft under the tuteledge of the Mighty James Brown and created the very essence of Funk. It's sad that today's music fans have no clue what"music" really is.
Reason why the majority of his concerts are overseas. Americans don't appreciate his brilliance.
I've seen him a bunch of times and it's always a great show. It's a shame we live in a world where everybody knows who Britney Spears is but nobody knows who Maceo Parker is.
You were very lucky, I’d of dropped everything and flown to Vegas for that.
That groove is awesome. Bass player a beast
I watch this every morning while waiting in the coffee to brew and it almost replaces caffeine!
best bass intro ever
check another song at the same concert remenbering Marvin Gaye. You will see the bass player in action

Damn - I can't stop coming back to this groove. My daily dose of funk!
I watched them do this one night back in 98'-99', in a club in Santa Clara,CA. at a brand new venue which was quite large but only had around 20 people in the whole place. Maceo and Fred played for 3 1/2 hours like they were in front of a full house. Lit the place UP!
One of my fondest memories.
Pros
HUH! MACEO! MACEO!! Is the Godfather in the house!!? 💥💥🇺🇲🇺🇲👍😎👍 R.I.P Soul Brother Number#1 James Brown! 🙏♥️
You don’t get much more funk than this folks.

First time I saw Mister Parker I say with all respect... Was in a small club in Montreal Canada
I was just a young struggling drummer.. at the time... Boom I was hooked on da funk man

R.I.P. Pee Wee Ellis. His legacy and contribution to the music will never be forgotten. Go away in peace, master!

This is such a beautiful piece of music played extraordinarily by people that have mastered their craft but also genuinely love what they are do. There are not many songs that are better to start your day off right!

Awesome!! Band!! Yeah!! Great music!!! Never heard them. And maybe I have, love this kinda music!! I'm 68 ,still Rock n Roll!! Till Death!!
The 3 horn players were in James Brown's band back in the day!
Good Golly Mr Fred on trombone he made everything shake on me and that basssss okayyyy That funk touched my ancestors inside me I shook off all bad vibes!
James Brown would be proud of these brothers keeping the funk going
This is what I call a real Masterpiece!
I saw Maceo and his Octet at a show at Antone's; three hours long and he apologized for leaving early. Top drawer, every band member got their time in the spotlight. Played the crowd beautifully. Whenever anyone asks me about the best shows I've ever seen, Maceo's name comes up.
He always gets the best musicians to play with him!!!
There's real joy and soul with these musicians. And the audience feels their funky grooves😂
What a tight, tight band. What a treat to listen to this.
Mr. Fred Wesley! Hopefully I hope I spelled it right. You are so bad ass... just take care of yourself man! You are an irretrievable resource...
Impossible to sit still for this one.
i saw him twice, 1991 in berlin (quasimodo) and on the north sea jazz festival 1997..., one of the best funky jazz musicians!
Class class class...they even dress smart with shirt n collar, ties n jackets and they were having as Much fun with it as we we were listening
Seen Maceo many times...pure funk genius...happy music!
This is the type of music we would love to hear more of here in New Zealand

I'm lucky enough to have seen him live twice. But it's worth mentioning that he's one of the hardest working keep-on-touring cats in the entire biz. So I BETTER have seen him at least once, being a sax player myself! Good God!
I am so grateful to hearing these guys live. Seminal to so many other artists and just an outstanding group of performers. Thank you!
Just got hipped to this video but have known about Maceo and Fred for years. FONKY!!!!! And that Bass Line? WOW!!!!! Str8-up Mornin'Breath, 14-day old dirty drawls, Stank Breath FUNK!!!!! Peace & Be Wild!

Props to the bass player!
Bernard Edwards played some awesome stuff with BC Rich Eagles for a while as well. High-quality stuff, not just for metalheads...
this is awesome, never knew that you could mix james Brown style, vocal harmony, jazz and a good share of r&b. Really great!

Fred Westley is the undeniable GOAT the sax!
Some of the greatest , most storied musicians in the world and still. The negative trolls insist on watching videos they're only going to dislike.
No taste.
Upscaling is fantastic and audio is superb. Give the drummer some!! This video opened up a whole other level of music for me
Genuine rhythm and soul power!
