  • A look at the life and works of Paul Henry, a painter who managed to capture the ephemeral light and schizophrenic weather of the West of Ireland so evocatively that his works have become the very image of Ireland known around the world today.

Happy St. Patricks day everyone! Back at long last, apologies for my extended absence, hope you're all keeping well. Also, apologies for some of the rougher bits in this video, was racing to get it all done and out in time for today, so there might be a few low res images in there(hard to find good quality pics of Henry's work) and there's a distinct lack of titles for many of Henry's works too. Though in fairness practically every Paul Henry painting is simply titled with some combination of the words "west" "cottage" "mountain" and "Ireland", they're hardly titles, more like proto hash tags.
Some other addendums for this video I didn't quite get time to include. Grace Henry and Mabel Young's work are actually in many instances far better than Henry's. I should have just made the bloody video about them (Though their works are hard to find in high res as well). Should also have included a bit about the string of other Irish Painters doing similar work at the time and since, Frank Mckelvey, Charles Lamb, James Humbert Craig, Maurice Wilkes, whom Brain Kennedy refers to as raconteurs of the landscape(lol), but I simply did not have time. They're works are very nice but they do lack that still timeless quality the best of Henry's stuff exudes, and definitely veer more heavily into idealization and the picturesque, though they are still rather charming.
Anyway sure look it it'll be grand as they say round here. I'll be back very soon with a look at yet another Henry, Henri Rousseau and the weirdly derogatory concept of the Outsider Artist, and following that we'll be taking a more detailed look at Expressionism and art in Germany during the run up to the first world war starting with Die Brücke, which I am really looking forward to.

Thank you very much. I was born in Belfast and love Paul Henry’s work. Could you do one on Sir Alfred Munnings? Or Tony OMalley?

Excellent documentary on a great painter. The narration is not only informative, but witty and irreverent. Highly entertaining and a nice change from the many stuffy art docs available on CZcams! I have never been to Ireland but Henry`s paintings make the land come alive. Beautiful.

This episode very much comes off as though you'd put extra special care into it. I love it! Henry's works are gorgeous. I feel that they compare favorably to, say, the Hudson school, which was attempting to establish an "American style" around the same time iirc.
Wow, Grace Henry truly is no slouch as well, no kidding.

I did put a bit of extra effort in alright, I've wanted to do this one for a while. Ended up rushing it a bit to get it out for Paddys day though, there was more I would have liked to include, actually went out to Achill to get footage but it didn't turn out great so couldn't use it in the end, pity! Funny you should mention the Hudson School, didn't think of the parallels there but you're right. Have a video in the works on Thomas Cole(more specifically his Course of Empire series) but he was pretty involved with all that too, will definitely return to these idea in the future

Ah, a shame, well the footage of Ireland is beautiful regardless. The fact that you're Irish yourself certainly brought a lot of color to this video, as a non-Irish person it was both entertaining and informative. I'll be happy to see your video on Thomas Cole, as I always am with your videos.

Thanks a million glad to hear that! Next one i'm doing is Henri Rousseau and after that I'll be taking a look at a Paul Klee, Otto Dix, Kathe Kollwitz and the artists involved in the Die Brucke and Blue Rider groups which I'm currently fascinated by. When I can get time that is! There's also several artists people have suggested that I'll do my best to cover too, and eventually I'd love to move on to contemporary art as well
