MUJU, SOUTH KOREA - We’re in the countryside town of Muju, South Korea, and we came here specifically to eat a Korean food meal that’s very traditional, yet extremely rare to find anymore.
To understand this Korean food, you need to know a little about the history. And previous, hemp fiber was used for traditional clothing and in order to process the plant, they needed steam it in a big community fire with hot rocks. So during that time, in the villages people discovered a technique of adding food to a pot and steaming it from the existing heat of the steamer. Korean have always been resourceful and innovative and this is a cooking technique that truly shows it.
Now, hemp fiber is no longer practical or common, and neither is setting up a massive rock pit with a bonfire - so there are only a handful of places in all of South Korea that still keep the tradition.
It was an honor to have this opportunity to try pork belly, potatoes, corn and eggs, all cooked in an underground Korean food steamer!
Thank you to KTO (Korea Tourism Organization) for sponsoring and making my trip to South Korea happen!

Korea, like any country, has cities and rural areas. Thank you so much for showing such a different culture, not a video of going to the city like an ordinary traveler and eating normal food.
It's so cool and thank you for trying to experience the culture of that country as much as possible. I hope you had a "delicious" trip.

Once again, Mark Wiens once again proves why he is the best CZcams Food channel in the game. He explores parts of the countries that are not as covered or known. I really appreciate this series Mark, because there is more to Korea than just the city of Seoul. I will definitely explore in all these parts of Korea when I eventually travel there. This dish is called ‘Samgut-gui’. ‘Samgut’ and ‘Samgut grilling’ are traditional Korean customs.
In Korea, traditionally, people used to weave hemp to make hemp clothing.
'Samgut' refers to the process of cooking hemp, the raw material for hemp clothing, to make it easier to peel off the bark.
'Samgut' was conducted in a collaborative form among local residents because it was difficult for individuals to carry out.
During this time, the local people steamed the hemp and then cooked it over a fire and shared it with alcohol.
The 'Samgut' after-party that is shared and eaten in this way is called 'Samgut-gui'.
Although 'Samgut' has disappeared into history, 'Samgut-gui' is still held as a local festival even today.

The level of strategy, engineering, and construction involved is intriguing. The incorporation of a bonfire and the use of heavy machinery like a backhoe and a tractor for this cooking method is truly unique. The layering of stones and the subsequent heating for approximately two hours to generate steam inside the oven is quite an elaborate process. Learning about the historical context of this technique, originally used for processing hemp into cloth and later adapted for cooking, adds an intriguing layer to its significance and evolution. It's impressive how an ancient method has been repurposed and adapted for culinary purposes.

Ah man just discovered this channel! I'm in Andorra currently and I haven't discovered the local food yet! That's bad. I make videos whilst traveling the world but don't do any local food reviews! He's doing this so right! Much to learn

I looove preserved gorilla leaves! The only drawback is that you have to steal it from a silverback while he is munching away. Not an easy feat.

Loved how they cook their food underground. Very similar process to us Niueans. Only difference we put the hot stones directly on the foil wrapped food. Thanks Mark for sharing this unique technique of Korean cooking 💚🥰
