- In this episode of our family travel vlog, we take the kids to Sa Pa Vietnam. Sa Pa is on many lists as one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia to visit. We didn't see much about doing Sa Pa with family, but we thought we'd give it a shot. It’s known mostly for the trekking through rice terraces, which the kids did an amazing job at. Unfortunately, we didn’t exactly go at the most picturesque time, but the family still had a great time.

We actually were only planning on going to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, which was a little over a 1-hour flight from Da Nang. But, as soon as we arrived in the hotel, we met with the hotel manager/concierge and we lined up a trip to Sa Pa.
Sa Pa is famous for its dramatic landscape, with steep mountain faces lined with rice terraces. I first read about it months prior and wasn’t sure if it was going to be something we would see, but lucky us, we made it.
To get there it took a bit of work. First an overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, right on the Chinese border, then a bit over an hour drive from Lao Cai to Sa Pa. Sa Pa was a bit of a wet muddy mess. The infrastructure felt bizarrely under-maintained for how many tourists were there trekking about. The entire town was in dire need of a facelift.
We didn’t come for the town though, we came for the trekking and it was great. A new experience for all of us, our trekking started on the first day from our “Royal” hotel (they used this term liberally), through Sa Pa town and into the countryside. We trekked for the entire day and it was still beautiful, we could only imagine if we had come at the right time of year, before the rice was harvested, with better weather.
Our second day, we went to Cat Cat village which was lovely and gave us the opportunity to see another hill tribe and how they lived.
Although we were only there for two days, I felt like we saw enough, although it would have been amazing to see it with blue skies and green fields.

Hi Angeline Jaimes! I love us too.. 😜 Thanks for watching!
Such a royal experience you guys! But really, it looked beautiful and so many great cultural and worldschooling opportunities.
Oh, definitely a great experience, I love trips like these as you make so many memories...it's not the destination but the journey!
How do the sleeper trains work with q familiy of 5? Do you get 1 room or 2?
+Always An Adventure With Kids the girls and Lua took one room as they had 4 beds in them and I was in another with a bunch of strangers. On the way up, it was noisy. Normal etiquette of not inviting people into your room and having a regular volume conversation seems to be lost on some groups. Just be prepared, I think we’re kind of done with sleeper trains. Sounds good on paper, but we never really sleep well and our whole group tend to be a bit moody when we’re lacking in sleep.
@@raggedshoes2582 Good to know! Thanks! How has it been finding accommodation for 5? Have you found it to be strict like the US, where they often only allow 4 in a room?
+Always An Adventure With Kids we stayed in mostly AirBnBs so it’s a non issue. We also looked for smaller hotels and they were typically accommodating. Just email or text them and they are usually fine. If breakfast is included, which is common, there may be a small surcharge. We had friends who packed a small airmatress and sleeping bag and went by the policy “don’t ask don’t tell”.
