Steve Kaufmann has talked about cross training with respect to languages (and so have a lot of other CZcamsrs). I recall watching one of his videos telling Japanese people to study Chinese to improve their English. Basically, if you feel like you have hit a plateau, taking a break but doing another language can help you break through that plateau. I think there's truth to that. I'm looking forward to your app you're working on. I'm a bit surprised though - I don't recall you talking Anki / flash cards very much.

First of all, maintaining 12 languages in itself is like WOW! I was overwhelmed with 4, now doing 3 😭 Secondly, I AGREE!!! Just like the body needs rest to build new muscle, I feel our brain also needs time to process what we learn 🤔 I've seen from personal experience how sometimes forcing/pressuring yourself only causes more stress/resistance, which maybe makes it more difficult to recall things, whereas (maybe) being in a relaxed state of mind we allow ourselves to "enter into the flow." We let it happen. I DON'T KNOW, but progress, not perfection, eh?

I am currently learning 2 languages and its not all that demanding. I probably can maintain 2 more, but i dont think it would be enjoyable until at least 2 years or more goes by. I am definetly going to add more languages in the future. I started learning swahili 4 years ago. I started learning brazilian portugues about 5 months ago. So i am not going to learn another language until maybe the year 2024.

I always say that learning is like dusting; when you're actively learning, the dust is all over the room and you can't really gather it and make a sense of it. Only once you let the dust settle can you really see the benefits of learning. If this isn't a wonderful example of that, I don't know what is!

I often find myself studying less on weekends compared to weekdays, and when I have my Monday tutor, I'm prepared to be completely lost, but it's often my best session when I hadn't studied before it! You propose quite the mystery regarding your Spanish and Hungarian immersions that day. We spend a 1/3 of our lives sleeping. What’s happening during that time? Crucial learning and memory formation. Even when we haven’t reviewed material or thought of certain subjects or ideas, the brain has an interesting way of actively working when we sleep. The phenomenon you presented is one that is bizarre yet real, but I believe the learning processes that occur when we sleep are the best explanations.

Spanish and French because they can help me with my career. (To be honest I struggle hard with both of the languages. I studied linguistics and for some reasons I started to hate Spanish and all of the Romanic languages)
Maybe I'm able to speak English, Dutch, Swedish on an intermediate/ advanced level.
And maybe I am able to write some kanas and understand and speak a little bit of Japanese, learning Hawaiian on an intermediate Level and start with German Sign language.
Don't think I start with hungarian even though I want to learn it since I was 17. 2022 has some plans for me so I have to manage my time, power and limits

I remember the theory of "filter up and filter down". I don't know if this has to do with your situation, but according to this, sometimes when we think before speaking, unconsciously we build a "wall" when we have to use the language and that is why we stumble more than those times when we are more relax.

I decided now, in my early 30’s, I would like to have 3 target languages instead of a bunch to focus actively on. Right now I am studying; Swedish, Russian, and by the Fall I am making a decision whether it’s going too be French or Spanish (more focus). And non-target; Japanese, Finnish, Norwegian and Chinese ( less focus).

    • @CrisOnTheInternet

I'm in my early 30's as well and I decided to focus on Mandarin and German this year, I'm crossing fingers that both of the courses I enrolled in keep open, because if not enough people enrolled in, they're going to be closed. However, I do have a plan B, I already purchased online courses for both languages. Portuguese will be on maintenance mode because I'm already fluent but I was kind of forgetting how to properly write and I need more vocabulary. And well for English I don't even need to put an effort, I'm constantly communicating for work and CZcams lol. It's hard to choose between the languages but I think I did a good compromise.

    • @MDobri-sy1ce
      @MDobri-sy1ce Před 2 lety

@@CrisOnTheInternet Yeah, I mean I do like a lot of languages but I realized for me, I would rather speak a handful really well and focusing on too many gets to tiring or does not achieve the results I would like to see. I would try looking online if your language course gets cancelled and maybe from an accredited online college or source. Other than English, French, and German language learning has been mostly a solo task. For example, I wanted to learn Swedish years ago but not too many resources were offered back than in my country. So, I ended up learning Russian because of it's uniqueness and my Slavic background. It was tough without a teacher but was amazed how much I was able to learn by myself including the Cyrillic Script. One of the biggest things, I found with language learning is have patience especially, with yourself. To learn the sounds in Russian and Cyrillic Script properly, it took many months. I am Canadian so, I grew up speaking English and some French. I learned German for a bit because one of my best friends is more than half but started learning Swedish, again because I re-connected with someone I have not spoken to for a long time. Plus, I like, the language and wanted to go back to it anyway but I guess now is the time.

For physical exercise, rest days are the time when progress takes hold. I think the same happens with vocal training, academic studies, anything. Recovery time is when the stuff you've been learning and practicing gets to settle and form. If you don't rest from physical exercise, you can risk injury, which in terms of language learning may be why you felt so clunky with Spanish. I think the idea is that sleep, rest, breaks are just as vital as active practice and study for making progress with anything. :) Maybe you could use this 'feeling like fluency is difficult' as a way to determine when to switch your focus from one language to the next, and when to give the other language a rest, so you can maximise your potential for progress.

The Spanish/Hungarian thing happens to me a lot! I think it depends on language comfort.
My language levels are Spanish (native) > English > French > Japanese. I noticed that whenever I try to speak in Japanese and I find something I don't know how to say, I don't go back to Spanish, but French! And my French is usually terrible, but it comes off much more fluently when I'm taking a break from Japanese. And it goes the same way with French; if I'm struggling with it, I jump off to English and it comes off more comfortably. It's so weird but fun to think about!

I feel like as far as Hungarian goes it may just be the effect of being away from the language for a while, or at least partially not focusing on it. For me I find that when I immerse myself in a language it becomes more natural to speak it, however I’ve also noticed that sometimes when I haven’t been studying a language in a long time I am able to take the language on more than when I’ve been studying. It’s like the saying that distance makes the heart grow fonder, I think for a language, distance can either lead to forgetting the language or to finally piecing together all that you’ve learned until then.

I also have B1 in Uzbek, ive been learning for 2 years and I chat once a wesk in it, the teacher understands Turkish so I feel more fluent because of that, however I lost my Kyrgyz, maybe I still understand it, but I feel like my Kyrgyz is like A2 now, I couldn’t maintain it. My Yakut is also A2 becAuse I haven’t practiced in awhile so I started studying Yakut with a friend and he’s teaching me Russian, my Russian is also more or less A2. Now my new languages are: Altay and Japanese. I learn Altai extremely fast because it’s very similar to other Turkic langfauws ive studied, but Altai is a very spiritual language, in fact I tested Altay’s frequency with a shaman to test at 730 on the Hawkins scale which means it’s at the enlightenment frequency meaning it just is, it’s ineffable, it’s the salvation of humanity and Altay is ultimate conciousness for a language. Japanese takes more time for me, I’m taking it very slow, no rush for me, I get so much happiness from chuvash and Altay languages they are my past lives for sure. I also know some Dutch, Jamaican creole. I think I relate, when we have so many languages in our repertoire it’s hard to make time to maintain/improve them all

I think it's toggl but you might also enjoy the forest app if you have friends with similar goals because you can add them and track your time
