When I went to Korea, I met a old grandpa selling hot chestnuts, all alone in the freezing cold of winter, so I decided to take my courage and buy him some. Before leaving, I said "감사합니다! 잘 먹겠습니다!/I'll eat it well" and the SMILE that appeared on his face was probably the most precious thing in the world.
I was so happy to make him brighten up... I still remember it 2 years later haha please don't hesitate to try to speak, you'll get some beautiful memories ^^

I'm very shy about trying to speak Korean. There's this one Korean restaurant that I go to sometimes and I'm always nervous about trying to speak Korean there. But I did it and it made one of the people who worked there smile. She even complimented me saying my Korean was good. That made me feel good and it encourages me to keep studying.
I have been learning languages all my life and I have a few things to say about the modern “polyglot” community. A lot of people are fluent in a couple of languages, yet claim to “speak” 20 (you can search a video of two guys claiming to speak 20+ languages, while actually being fluent in a few of them). Why make a show out of it and not put earnest effort to learn as much as you can.
I genuinely believe that it’s more efficient to learn a few languages (2,3 or 4) and speak the languages fluently, then learn 10, for instance, and barely get by in all of them. Remember, quality over quantity.
For sure. Learning too many languages for the sake of knowing how to speak billions of languages is stressful. You end up just hoping around everything. In the end, even if you have acquired quite a bit, you will always have to keep trying to squish time into your day to review all the languages once in a while

I know people who know 7 and 10 languages fluently. They can read, write and speak it and have conversation in them. So I disagree agree with you.
I think it ultimately depends on a language learner’s goal. Sometimes quantity and not quality is the aim of others. Language learning is exploration, some prefer to travel to as many languages as he or she can; whereas others prefer to visit only a few and explore its cities in depth. The goal we all share in common is the pursuit for beauty, it is like a diamond, and both approaches shines with its unique splendor. There is beauty in breadth like the expanse of the heavens and there is beauty in depth like the wonders of oceans. But as bees we must all flit over gardens and dive deep in flowers to gathers its honey.
I don’t really agree, I think it’s way way more useful to be conversationally fluent in 10 languages rather than knowing the ins and outs of grammar of three or four. Yeah if they can’t communicate or watch media in that language, they aren’t really fluent, but if they have an active vocab of 10,000 rather than 20,000, I think that’s fine in order to say that they’re fluent, they’ll still understand over 90 percent of most conversations. I want to learn german grammar in order to teach it, but other than that there is no practical reason for it.
The first language I started learning was Mandarin, and in the early days summoned the courage to go into a Chinese restaurant and try to say wǎnshàng hǎo (good evening), at first she didn't understand but then she went "ah wanshang hao" and wrote something down on my order... I quickly noped out and left... Not sure what I had ordered!
How is your Mandarin now?
@@sabrina3138 haha, I keep starting and stopping... For some reason I have some issues to work out with myself (confidence, self-belief etc) before I feel I can continue. It's strange though, I only have problems with Mandarin, not other languages I'm learning...
Mandarin is without a doubt one of the toughest languages to learn, if not the toughest.
But every time I want to give up, I tell to myself "Hey, 1.5 billion people speak it, how hard can it be?" :)
@@MVahag I used to think that, but there's no verb conjugation! The tonal aspect can make it tricky I guess, and learning all those characters...
@@aprilcox871 Keep trying, push yourself out of your comfort zone. It may feel like a chore, but remember that you have bad habits while learning it. It may be a little bit hard in the beginning, but you will adapt and go on with good habits.

Long answer: I've lived overseas more than half my life, so I've always been sending "news" back to wherever I've lived before. I studied journalism in college, so it's part joke, part serious. The first time I used the name was to write group e-mails about Japan to people in other countries with 'NFTOS' as the subject line. Then I had an art show with the same title in Korea which featured all foreign artists and one local artist.
Next came a podcast by the same name. When CZcams was created, well, you probably get the idea.

After a year of trying to learn Korean I FINALLY said a simple 감사합니다 to someone at a Korean restaurant the other day. I was so nervous to do it and felt a bit embarrassed afterwards, but I was also proud of myself. I still usually chicken out though. I gotta get past the fear of sounding stupid and just go for it!

When I am having fun .. jogging or taking a drink I usually listen to audios or podcast just for entertainment I feel that it has helped me somehow consciously. (I do this for the languages that I know I have an intermediate level). When I am just a beginner I just make my ear and brain feel accustomed to the sounds of my language goal and I'd better be focused on haha ..

when i was travelling to france with school, we were at a stop and when me and my friends sat down a korean couple came over and greeted us and asked us where we were travelling from, i told the man and he turned around to tell his wife “영국” and i went oh i know a bit of korean! but wasnt confident in my pronunciation and was hesitant in case i forgot honorifics. i do hope they are safe and well. （╹◡╹）♡
This is helpful. I started learning Korean about 10 years ago and I'm still not that fluent. Maybe because of my bad mindset.
I speak Tagalog (my mother tongue), Bikol Central (another mother tongue, kinda), English, and Korean. I'm planning to learn Irish Gaelic, and German.

Fascinated that you want to learn Irish! Not even many Irish citizens can carry a conversation in Irish, me included! It's a lovely language though, I wish I could speak it.

This resonates with me so much! I started studying Mandarin when I was in school. After studying Chinese for a few years, when I finally went to China I was too scared to even ask where the bathroom was. Now when speaking Korean I am much much more fearless ( I probably sound stupid much of the time, but I just don't care anymore). I just talk and keep repeating things until people understand what I am trying to say. I am less focused on being "perfect" and more focused on actual communication. Defs agree with the studygram comment too - I also try to limit my time on instagram now for that reason. Great video! ✨
This is what i needed.. my anxiety affects my mindset a lot and i keep struggling everytime i want to learn new languages. I'll watch this video whenever i feel unmotivated from now on☺️

I’m currently trying to learn Korean because I think the language is cool. I try to keep myself motivated by telling myself, “ Think of all the korean manhwa you could read!” And all the Korean youtubers you could watch without needing subtitles!” I also think how cool I would look reading a Korean book in class 😅
My mom tells me I should improve my Spanish first, since my family is Mexican and English is my first language, but since I’m sort of intermediate in Spanish, I think I’ll spend time learning both languages. (Especially with all the free time we have thanks to quarantine)

In regards on fearlessness and flexibility I have two stories for you (I am learning Korean) first, when I went to Seoul, I put myself to greet every single person I could in korean and to say thank you and please and all of those pleasantries in korean. And it felt liberating because people understood and they made the effort to keep the conversation in korean even thoumost if the time I couldn’t keep up. Even when I tried to give the address of my hotel to a taxi driver and he said that I spoke very good but the address was written wrongly I felt good with myself. Second: I tried only CZcams videos first but that didn’t help me much. Then I tried only watching kdramas, but I only like the historical ones and those are not very helpful in learning everyday korean lol. Then I downloaded Korean Grammar in Use and Basic Grammar by Andrew Byon because I love grammar but that proved difficult without real life examples and a teacher who I could ask questions. Then I enrolled in a korean course in Spanish (my native language) and the teacher didn’t know grammar, only her knowledge of speaking korean since birth so my questions remained unanswered. I gave up a little bit but then I decided to just use everything. I double check everything with several sources and I discovered TTMIK which is a lifesaver and I actually enjoy learning now. I give modern kdramas a chance to be able to listen and of course kpop always helps because it actually helps me check if my hearing has improved if a previously unknown lyric suddenly is understood. Also I now discovered you which inspired me immensely because now I am also learning French and it has proven difficult because it’s not for personal enjoyment but a life obligation.
hey! if you still try to find something to watch in korean i can recommend you a korean tv show named "the return of superman" in which korean celebrities that are fathers looking after their children. this show really helped me since the kids in the show learning korean as they grow up (their native language is korean). you can find it's episodes with english subtitles on kbs world's channel. also i would recommend you to watch reality shows rather than dramas since dramas scripted and the reality shows are not scripted (you can hear more natural sentences made by native speakers). but these are just my recommends, you should do what you enjoy while learning.
Just a quick funny story about me & German language.
When I was very young, like child age, prob 9 years old, I had the option to learn either French or German.
At that time I believed that Nazi Germany still existed so I wanted to learn German and be a “Russian Spy” to save the world 😂
Eventually I got kicked out the class because they found out I was being overwhelmed with this extra class (I have learning difficulties and I already was struggling with English in addition to Finnish and Russian languages) and that’s how my relationship with German language ended. Might pick it up later since it’s a cool language 😁

studying french while being an introvert is so difficult.
Speaking about the choice of the language to learn: funnily enough in my case I tend to end up being fascinated with languages I primarily didn't like at all. Like regarding their sound and how weird they seemed to me. That's how I ended up learning French for couple of years now and being continuously and even increasingly fascinated with the language and that's how I started absorbing the absolute basics of Hungarian like 4 days ago
I think that what you said about the studyblr and instagram lang-learning communities and the neat note-taking is SO TRUE and something that I've been thinking about lately. I understand the mindset that the better notes look, the more likely we are to go back and look at them, but I also think it's better to be honest in terms of motivation. It really just seems like people have become so focused on taking beautiful notes just for the purpose of sharing them online. And that is such a waste of precious time imo. There has to be a balance. I believe that time efficiency is probably the most important factor when it comes to note-taking, especially if you're no longer a full-time student.
I don't want to learn French anymore but I don't want to throw away the time that I spent in it so I just continue and I'm getting in a really comfortable level
I found that one of the best things (not really mindset but strategy) is to tailor your learning toward your goals. It sounds self explanatory, but many people, including myself, start off just by going through a textbook or app with no personal tweaking. I started studying first the things I would use most often in my daily life. Being from Miami, learning Spanish was less about vegetables and proper grammar, but I started with how I could better order at restaurants, talk to customers at work, etc. things that blend in with my life in a bilingual area

I admire people who are able to create notes who look like art, it can be a waste of time but the results, sometimes, are very satisfying. I truly understand this advice of not wasting time creating good looking notes, it makes all sense but... two of the things who keep me unmotivated when I am trying to study something are my messy notes and my calligraphy. It's CHAOS!!! It makes me wanna give up. I guess before I try to learn a language I should try first to learn how to take notes... :'(

This really hit home. Fearlessness is the hardest part for me. I've been learning bits of French for several years now, but the perfectionist in me is scared to speak "until I'm good". Obviously, this is counterproductive, because I'm never going to improve unless I actually USE the language. I'm trying to work through my fears of sounding silly one day at a time. I took a huge leap of faith recently by making a video here on CZcams about how I'm learning French at home and I hope it pushes me out of my shell.

Your first point is absolutely CRITICAL, and I'll be honest it's a big hurdle for me. In the past, I regret not saying 'hello' in Russian to a few Russians I've come across, out of fear of looking stupid or treated with suspicion, but I find Russian fascinating. Anyway, keep up the great content!

I found this video really useful, thank you! :) I often worry I'm getting too old or can't learn more than 1-2 languages at a time, even though I'm interested in about 5. I often feel so much pressure to be consistent with my studies because I see people online doing stuff every day and it can get hard sometimes. But this video helped a lot. :)
Thank you so much for talking about not having a schedule to study. All of the youtuber polyglots that I look at for tips have such structured days and schedules to work. This makes me feel like I cant learn a language because I just don't like schedules and it just puts me off more.

9:07 I have certainly fallen victim to this big time! I had fun with it at first but I've definitely stopped trying to post absolute masterpieces of notes. When it started becoming a burden, I scaled down and I feel a huge difference. It's quite freeing. Progress is great but I'm not always running to post on a schedule or all the time like before. It should really be for myself at the end of the day.

I really want to thank you from the deepest part of my heart. I'm Italian and learning English was so frustrating for me, and I always thought I will never be good enough compared to other people. Then last year I went to South Korea to start learning Korean, and meeting other people from all around the world made me realize that my mindset was completely wrong. I was struggling of course, but we were struggling all together and it was fun! All your points are so accurate.

Intrinsic motivation is soooooo important. If there was anything I remember from the tefl course I took, it was to help people become ~lifelong learners~, help them become ~intrinsically~ motivated. And that applies to ourselves too!

I have learnt English for over 10 years and my English still over the beginner a little bit. However, I have a huge love to English so I am deciding to quit my job and focusing 100% on studying English. Thank you for your videos due to they are really useful and interesting. Hello Lindie. I've discovered your channel few days ago and just wanted to share my feelings to you.
I admire your confidance and your mindset about languages learning : this is exactly what I needed to be able to evolve in my own language learning journey.
Your videos, and espacily this one, had free myself from a lot of guilt and pressure I was putting into the task of learning Japanese.
I'm learning this language since middle school (so for more than 10 years) but haven't been really consistent.
Result is that now I am still a beginner unable to have easy conversation.
Some weeks ago I've decided to get back to studying serioulsy but I was still putting a lot of pressure on myself, thinking about all the times I've put Japanese aside.
Now all I have to do is to think about your mindset and I feel serene. I just want to have fun learning no matter my results :)
I wanted to thank you for that and encourage you to keep up the good work you're putting into your channel.
I'm looking forward to see more of your videos!

I recall trying to learn Japanese for business purposes and didn't last long as I wasn't enjoying it (I didn't enjoy the job either, but that is another story ;-) ) My current TLs have other significant motivations that really help make them fun.

I love this! I'd also want to mention that you need to let go of your ego a little bit. I feel like this is kind of a combination of your fearlessness and flexibility ideas. You mentioned you can't express yourself as well as you can in your target language. That holds a lot of people because they want to. Gotta get over it. You gotta get creative to say the things you want.
But, there's really interesting things about which is more important. Making sure you don't make mistakes so they don't fossilize or being daring and trying new things? It really depends on your goals in the end. If you want to be a technical translator you can't have a lot of fossilization. But, for the vast majority of us, get out there and doooo it!

Thank you Lindie. Really enjoyed the video and I loved what you said about no. 4 focus. I have been busy with Croatian, just less than a year. Often I have thought I should be "kind of fluent" by then and of course I am ages way from it. But it's ok. As you said, it's a life lasting journey.
