  • Designing an experiment well is crucial to getting results that you can rely on. In this film for the Physiological Society, Greg Foot explores the idea that Beetroot has an effect on the body. Dr Valerie Gladwell and some students from the University of Essex put Greg through his paces after designing an experiment to test whether drinking beetroot juice can improve stamina, and discuss the benefits and limitations of different experimental designs.

    1. A question was posed, theoretical basis stated, hypothesis formulated, method developed to test the hypothesis, results were recorded, a conclusion was drawn,
    sources of error identified, and modifications were suggested.
    2. Science teachers may not feel equipped to teach this type of lesson and many students are not accustom to thinking critically and this type of science lesson may be met with a lot of resistance on the part of students.
