I was fortunate to take a three day instructional series with Howard Roberts. Along with being super informative, teaching you how to learn, applying theory to guitar, and providing many stories of the studio (he insisted that he didn't have any tunes memorized); he was a kind and generous fellow to hang out with at lunch.

He's right on about The Beatles helping you learn music. I started learning like 8 months ago and a lot of songs I feel like I don't gain much knowledge from learning. But every time I learn a new Beatles song I legitimately feel so much more confident in a new area of using chords. They were legitimate masterminds.

I remember being blown away by that Feels So Good solo. Bravo man!
Re Howard Roberts. Trust me on this... on of the best albums EVER is Howard Roberts' "The Velvet Groove". OMG. The songs. The arrangements. The playing. Perfection! Howard was a true badass!

I use to be one of the guys playing in the garage with Grant and toured with him way back during high school and right after. We had a lot of fun and I learned almost everything I know about playing guitar from him. He is and was a great friend and we always knew if anyone of us was going to hit the big time it would be him. And by the way we were playing everything from Beatles, Stones, CSN and Y, Credence, Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago and originals; all the while he was taking jazz lessons and college music course's to show us how a real music professional learns his art. I think of those formative days with great fondness. Proud to say he is my friend. PS Grant made sure I knew who Howard Roberts was and that is one cool guitar.

My guitar teacher turned me on to Howard Roberts back in the 60s. I still have his albums, somewhere. :O)
One of my favorite Beatles solos is Michelle. I still play Michelle today every time I play.
So much outstanding music came out of that era!!!

One thing that does make my skin crawl about this shop is the way they swing instruments around in the back! I ALWAYS think someone is going to snap the head stock off a priceless git fiddle!

7:56 As a guitar player, I can confirm what Norm and Grant say. As a beginner, I had a Beatle song book, and then bought another one for a birthday. I used those book until college, and by then I could play in any rock band. Please use Norm and Grant's advice.

Wrong(😜); a lucky lucky spoilt Aussie no less has an original 1965 example with mini-humbug, walnut brown, the “right” scale, carved solid spruce top (ply back but) & just professionally repaired, adjusted & setup. Love it! Grant, urs being all acoustic, is the back also carved? Sounds great/just like mine ... has very useful acoustic sound & response. Urs 25.5” scale? I must get those HR albums. Learned recently HR was a WreckingCrew stalwart & wrote lotsa textboox but many were simply incomprehensible 2 me. As I write I’m digging Grant’s playing on that acoustic HR .. it sounds gr8

What kind of strings would be best on a guitar like that to get a good acoustic sound and volume?
I own an epiphone re-issue of the HR1. It has .012 flat wounds. It doesn't get much playing any more. Plugged in, it sounds great. Acoustically, not so much. Would rond wound bronze strings be better for acoustic playing? Maybe .011?
The higher gage of the strings doesn't work so well for me. I got used to .011 and 0.010 on other guitars. And found myself preferring the feel and sound of round wound strings, especially on semi-hollow and solid body guitars.u
