In this video, I compare a 1966 Epiphone Howard Roberts to a 1976 Gibson Howard Roberts. Epiphone models of the Howard Roberts are notoriously more valuable than the Gibsons. Watch the video to find out why! Tell me which one you like better? Do you hear a big difference in the tone? Thanks for watching!!

"Turn the knobs until you like it" has to be the best, most succinct advice on tone adjustment I've ever heard.
...And you can't go wrong with...Howard Roberts playing!.. Gosh, I wish he was still around!.. :) Nice comparison, Rich.. :)
I have the Gibson....Mine's a '74 model...in transparent cherry red.. I love it!..and love all the tones I can get..
Love the âturn the knobs until you like itâ.
Haha! Thanks for watching and commenting Lew!
Yes , both sound very beautiful. The Gibson could use a little pot cleaner . You also have the best of style of guitar collections I could ever imagine to have .
His hands glides. Barley moves and yet heâs sounds like his finger are everywhere.. thank you Sir
Thanks for watching!
Like the Gibson, mellow tone!
Thanks, Mark!
Both beautiful sounding Howard Robert's guitars.I had a Gibson HR and today have the ES175 . Looking back I wish still had the Howard Robert's Jazz Fusion. .Your a awesome fretboard player .
Haha I know the feeling... looking back I wish I had many guitars that I have sold! Hopefully you'll find another HR Jazz fusion one day. They are sweet!
Rich, have you ever played the Ibanez HR? If so, what are your thoughts on it and how does it differ fro the Gibson and the Epiphone??
Iâve been having a lot of fun watching your guitar reviews, Rich. Iâve been focused on acoustic folk and fingerstyle for a long time, but now want to explore jazz. Iâm a little intimidated with how much there is to learn, and I need a jazz box like these. But itâs gonna be fun! Thanks for your videos!
That's great Gregory! My new course Jazz Guitar Improv was created for people like you. I have no doubt you have the skill needed to play jazz, you just need step by step instruction on what makes up a standard, what makes a good solo, and how to make your own solo. That is what the course is all about! I take the intimidation out of it because I show you exactly what to do to build up the skills you actually need. jazz-guitar-improv.teachable.com/
Also, I think an Eastman or a Guild would probably be a good fit for you in terms of a jazz guitar depending on how much you are willing to spend: You can see what I have available here: www.guitarcollege.net/for-sale.html
And keep an eye out for new videos of guitars I have for sale! Thanks for watching Gregory!
@@RichSeversonGuitar , thank you, sir! Iâll check out the course. For now I have an Epiphone ES-339 to practice with. Iâve actually been eyeballing the Eastman guitars, especially the AR372CE. Iâve been watching your instrument sales too!
@@Muhlenburger Nice Gregory! The Epiphone is a solid beginner jazz guitar and yes that model Eastman would be a nice fit for you and may give you a boost in motivation to dive deeper into jazz
Both sound wonderful!
Mineâs a 65 Kalamazoo Custom .. Same mini pickup. Dumps all over the many excellent Japanese clones Iâve had. Ur Gibbo sounds thicker âcos of the full Humbucker. The Kalamazoos have the 25.5â scale. Donât like shorter scale .. sorta feel sloppy.
Really love the Gibson overall. Just a richer tone.
nice tone
Rich, I am not familiar with the CZcams thing, but for the right price, I am definitely interested in the Epi. It sounds amazing.
I am asking $3,800 for it. Email me at rich@guitarcollege.com and we can talk away from youtube
Which is heavier??? It wasn't clear. Thanks!
w
The Gibson
The Epi for me ...
Me too! Thanks for the comment, Roberto!
Your guitar is only a speaker of your soulâŠ.
Gibson is lovely
Thanks for watching and commenting!
thatâs a Clickbait title because you know he doesnât say why he thinks the Epiphone is better. You can hear it in a way itâs a more subtle sound than Gibson. He had to tweak the Gibson up quite a bit to get it to sound right. I think those volume in tone controls are weird on the guitar right ? thereâs three of them.
Thanks for watching!
The Epiphone sounds richer than the Gibson.
Epiphone no fret buzz
Is Epiphone sounds a little bit Woodier if that's a word had an Ibanez copy didn't like it
It is a word now! lol. Thanks for watching and commenting Jay!
Yes, that's how I've always described the Epi Roberts vs. the Gibson Roberts. In fact that's how I tend to hear and describe all carved tops compared to laminated tops. Jim Hall is like the gold standard of that woodier, carved top tone, for me. Woody, warm, bell-like - the sound I always aim for personally. I have a 1968 tobacco sunburst Epi Howard Roberts and just love it. It's my #1. The floating Johnny Smith type mini-humbucker was changed to a black Bartolini humbucker which sounds just lovely. Some people have commented they weren't happy with the more treblier mini-humbucker. I bought the guitar after falling in love with my friend's really nice Gibson Howard Roberts, but while searching I came upon the Epi and loved it even more than the Gibson and never regretted my decision.
So why again is the Epiphone *way better* than the Gibson? Did I miss something?
Epi has a solid carved top (and sides) like the L-5, Johnny Smith, Super 400, DeAngelico New Yorker and all the other top end boxes vs. the Gibson's plywood (laminate) top and sides like the ES-175 and all other mid and lower line production boxes. The Gibson is more ornate and with fancier electronics with the weird mid-range band pass knob (which most players don't know how to use), but the Epi guitar itself is a better handmade guitar. You can't really tell in this video but the Epi has a mellower, woodier, Jim Hall type sound vs. the brighter, well, more Howard Roberts sound of the Gibson. But both are excellent and you can certainly also get a great, sweet warm tone from the Gibson. So I don't know if I'd say the Epi is WAY better, but for me personally I like it better. I'm partial to carved tops. The wood resonates better/freer vs. laminates since the glue layers solidify the wood and restrict its resonations a bit. The advantage of laminates over carved tops is that they are more robust, more roadworthy. You don't have to be quite as careful with them. Carved tops generally sound better and are worth more - rarer, but you need to be more careful with them. Just my opinion.
Not really a fan of the sound hole in the middle.
I think that's one of the most distinctive features, the oval sound hole, I think it looks great.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@RichSeversonGuitar and purchasing the outstanding lessonsđ. You are most welcome! Thanks for the content
Gibson has a more "blossom" like tone..lol..maybe fatter?..what is a good adjective? lol
I think the Gibson sounds much nicer than the Epiphone. Didn"t like the Epiphone at all.
