  • In this video, I show you a great vintage jazz archtop guitar that I have for sale that I really think puts out a very cool sound! This is a 1973 Gibson Howard Roberts Custom that is in excellent shape. I love the wine red finish as well! I have had several of these guitars in the past but this one, for some reason, has a very unique sounding high-end tone that sounds very interesting. It comes through crystal clear on fingerstyle arrangements! Let me know what you think of the guitar, leave me a comment, and thanks for watching!

After teaching at GIT/Musicians Institute, in Hollywood, CA, for three years, he developed and published his own home study guitar school-type curriculum available on his website www.GuitarCollegeLibrary.com which has helped over ten thousand students improve their playing.
    Rich has won honorable mentions and awards in songwriting and served as president of the Ventura County Producers and Songwriters Guild. Touring for three years with "Dick Clark's Good Old Rock and Roll Show," he had the opportunity to perform with Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Little Anthony, and many other great, old-time rock and rollers.
    After moving his family to the Yosemite/Fresno area, he taught guitar and directed the jazz band at Fresno Pacific University for two years. Being a well-rounded player, Rich is comfortable playing a variety of styles, including jazz (his favorite), blues, rock, fusion, country, and solo fingerstyle. He performs at local venues in a number of different scenarios, as a solo guitarist, with his jazz trio or quartet or smooth jazz quintet. I used to work for Gibson in the 70s. Howard had a great vibrato touch that went into his unique sound. I owned that model in the 70s, and the pickguard would gas and disintegrate.
    One of the most comfortable guitars to play and a fantastic sound. Thanks Rich for showing it off.

    Sounds the way I always hope an Eastman will sound but rarely does….Magic! Also, perhaps the nicest Howard Roberts I’ve been privileged to hear….

      Why do you think that is? I actually noticed that when I don’t hear my own sound of plucking the strings and only listen to the recorded amplified sound, my Eastman sounds really similar to this, but during the process my own perception is worse.

    I got one last week. It has the HR name plate, a good pick guard, and original bridge (wooden, not tune-o--matic) - It's beautiful, a nice slim neck with 'fretless wonder' frets which I like and when plugged in, it sounds amazingly clear and true. I haven't stopped smiling 😃

  • @GordonZoot
    @GordonZoot Před rokem +1

    I measured the difference between the Howard Roberts and an L5 - the L5 gets feedback at a much lower volume so in a live setting the HR is far more practical.

    So this is the most interesting guitar ever. On my list of most wanted guitars, it comes first, followed by the ES 175 TD and finally the L5.

    Howard felt the 'F' holes...got covered too much..by the pickguard and your arm...and he preferred the oval hole...his idea. Again...check with Mitch Holder...Rich, for more information on it.

  • @Rowlandph
    @Rowlandph Před rokem +1

    Another great thing on this guitar..is.. IF you ever needed to work on the pickup....there's a jack...just inside the oval hole...that allows you to unplug!.. the pickup!...without having to take out the wiring!.. The top is thicker than on the ES 175...Howard's idea, I think...to help avoid feedback?...

    You're very lucky the pickguard was removed. I have an original 1974 Gibson and the pickguard vaporized and destroyed the pickup, frets, jack and all internal electric parts. Replaced PU with custom Linday Freilin, refretted, new jack/potts, and ebony pickguard. Great work by Mass Street Music in Lawrence, Ks. Sounded incredible before and now. Plays beautifully. Much better than ES 175.

    There’s a toroidal choke in the body interior in the mid- range circuit which adds to the great weight of the guitar.

  • @Rowlandph
    @Rowlandph Před rokem +1

    Also...there's a guy on instagram...excellept player..who plays a HR model.. just to get an idea , further...of it's tone.. With the two tone controls....on this.. you can get a wide variety of tones, I've found on mine.

    That one HR is in amazing condition considering the age. When I was on the search for one of these in the late 70’s early 80’s they were always well used by then. Curious how it compares to the early Herb Ellis ES-165 model that had a floating neck pickup?

    Rich... As I understand it, from Mitch Holder....Gibson didn't make the Wine Red...until '75. In late '73 throught '74...it was Cherry Red and Sunburst...for the two colors. I have a cherry red model.. Also.. Mitch.. .said they ran the same serial #'s...for either ...think he said.. '73 AND '74.. or it was '74 and '75. So...check with Mitch, whom you know well. Mitch..has the papers on all those models..

    • @Sinnsonido
      @Sinnsonido Před rokem

      Any thoughts on how to decipher the serial number on these? Mine was sold to me as a '73 but it seems like everyone is just guessing....

    • @Rowlandph
      @Rowlandph Před rokem

      @@Sinnsonido I don't. Mitch Holder, who used to work for Gibson...and is on facebook...whom I know.. told me he didn't know WHY gibson just..used the same numbers again!.. But...contact him on facebook and see if he can give you a better idea.. I know he told me that the wine red ones...didn't start until '75, at which time they discontinued the Cherry Reds...(which is the color of mine) Also, since Rich changed the pickup on this one...contact him to see if it still had the plug in jack inside the guitar that is part of the wiring that was with the original pickup.

    I own one of these ( sunburst) I love it, but the feedback is really a problem .for that reason .I only play it at home , never on gigs.. I noticed that on my guitar the pick up touches the body ( maybe that is the reason of the feedback) I could not see it good on your video, but is the pickup on your guitar also touching the body or is it floating ?
